I LOVE the sense you speak of regarding Hermes quota bags, specifically the Birkin; from a consumer's perspective (I do have some Hermes items), I think Hermes, and those seeking to purchase their products should be reminded, WE the consumer are the ONLY reason they have a business; without WE the consumer they cannot sell products; I would love to see a revolt against any company who thinks we should be privileged to buy their products; HOWEVER, as long as WE the consumer allow this, it will continue.

Hey there, Amelia Rose! Great advice that is useful for other items or situations. This is a slightly different instance, but your points remind me of a belief I had about the different jobs I had. I wasn’t making the kind of money that I thought I needed to be happy. I was depressed all the time. However, once I had a job that paid way more than my previous jobs, I was still depressed. I was under an erroneous assumption. It turned out that I was actually suffering from depression and I needed therapy. Sometimes we think that things will make us happier. I still like getting items that I can afford but I know that they’re just wants and not necessities. You are very wise for someone so young. Thank you so much for sharing.

I kept looking at that candle in the background (when I could only see it just popping out) thinking it was pasta sauce 😂 I’m minimally trying for a Birkin 25, but not going overboard. I can see how people can get sucked in. I’m only getting things that I truly love and would buy without an offer.

I think you make great points! What really doesn’t seat well with me is that you keep talking about the amount over retail you paid and the reliable reseller you bought it from but you never fully disclosed how much and who you bought it from, why not come full honest with your viewers? I was actually really happy for you because that bag has your name all over, and I think you truly are one of the very few KZreadrs that bought a Birkin truly to enjoy and not to collect dust to later resell like many we all know about 🙄😉🤷🏼‍♀️

As far as not being able to try on a bunch of sizes, I'd definitely recommend going to consignment and secondhand luxury stores. No, they won't have multiple BCKs in all variations on one day in one store but if you visit them over some time and take pictures/ ask ppl there to take pictures of you with the bags, you'll eventually get an idea of what the leathers feel like and how sizes sit on your frame 😊 Like you said, it's about patience. Doing your research beforehand means that if/when you take the plunge, you can do it with pure excitement not giddy dread with a voice in the back of your head saying "what if it doesn't work for me?" 💕

Excellent and honest video! Your points have been the same thing I have been saying. I belong to a FB group and some of the comments are so over the top with the praise and worship of Hermes. Also shopping and lux shopping should be fun and exciting. Hermes and it’s selling practices along with all the videos/comments about he stress/pressure/anger in getting the bag or a offer takes the fun out of the bag. I don’t want to pay that type of money and every time I use the bag it reminds me of the stress it took to get it or the anger/sadness I felt when someone got one before me, let alone the pre spend on items I don’t really use. Life is too short to be stressed, at least if bought on the resale it’s stress free (after you get over the shock of the price 😅)

Definitely support ALL of this. I have a 40cm Kelly Togo PHW, she is really telling the truth. It’s utter bullshit going thru the boutiques, soooo many beautiful bags available on the resell market. It’s honestly the most direct way. I also use my Kelly almost daily. The bags are quite heavy as well, something to really consider.

I don’t have the money to buy anything from Hermes, but if I did, I would choose to buy a Constance in a fun colour. In general I prefer a shoulder bag and I like the plainer style of the Constance with the H on it.

Great Video Amelia - agree whole heartedly. As you know I have a few! I love them and I do feel very blessed - it doesn't annoy me that I have to make a wishlist - I understand it and am happy to wait. However, as you say if that would annoy you - then Hermes is not for you! It certainly does not make you happier in life. None of these things do - they are just things. Not to say I wasn't happy to get the call - of course I was estatic but it doesn't change your life. Chasing luxury items and spending money can often be the product of someone who is very unhappy and trying to fill a void. There's a whole video we could do just on that subject!!!

Until it has a strap, it’s a no from me and the price is astronomical for bag. Also, “Buying to fill a hole in your life”, is a tricky one. At the time you are doing this, you don’t realise it. You often feel fine day-to-day, but may have enormous long term stresses such as a poorly family member or friend, job worries, home renovations or even relocation. It’s generally when that stress comes to a conclusion and the purchasing slows down, that the realisation of why you were a out of control with purchases (or eating, gambling etc.) occurs to you. It’s a hard reason to pin point and stop.

The Ferragamo Studio bag (the original one) looks a bit like a birkin but it also comes with a strap, so might be a good alternative

For context, I know that Bond Street London do offer wish list with no minimum spend but I was told if I was NOT a resident in the UK the wish would only last 2 weeks ( so not really a route for visitors unless VERY LUCKY) , but up to 8 months for UK residents. I made my wish on my very first visit (where I bought my Evelyn which is what I went in for ) so had no relationship . The sales associate was wonderfully helpful and took my very specific wish and I left , not holding my breath. I was amazed when 5 weeks later I got the email saying a bag was in and was being held for me (having seen all the stories online talking about minimum spends and long waits etc). It was a wonderful experience from start to finish and I cannot fault my experience with the London team, from creation of wish list to my in store purchase experience.

Victoria I completely agree with you. I made my wishlist with them July 2022 which is due to expire March 2023, I got my email yesterday that my Birkin was available! I didn't play the game and I only made small purchases of items that I love.

That is a stunning Birkin. Congratulations! It is so totally your colour! I do like Hermes but I would go for a Kelly if I got the chance because I like the trapeze shape and cross body strap. However other brands have top handle bags with cross body straps that are similar so I am not going to get on the Hermes waiting list. I have tons of patience for getting things, but not really for a handbag!

Great list and explained so well. For a purchase of this size, definitely want to consider every point you made. I do think the Birkin looks better if it holds its shape, and because it is full grain leather, it can be distorted and look sloppy. I would get a bag organizer, at the very least, and not use it as a grocery sack. There is a difference between use and misuse. Just as you take care of your skin, you can take care of your animal skin. 😢

Great video! Your bag is beautiful 😍 I’d probably have to go about it the same as you if I ever do get very serious about acquiring one. I’ve been to the store and asked to see a bag and they made me put on gloves to touch it. What do you think you can decipher between a calfskin or lambskin when your fingers are fully covered?? 😂 The whole process sounds like let me slap you across the face first and then give me all your money 😂

This is great. @HelloCatwalkCity did a similar video a few weeks ago and I am convinced that a Birkin is not for me right now. I have a Kelly and 2 non quota Hermes bags and I think I am done. I want a Birkin because I love crook of arm bags, but I have a great vintage Chanel “speedy” type bag that fills that void. I have a large collection and am striving for purse peace 😀

hi n I checked thriftstores in wealthy areas n found authentic hermes bags ($30), wallets ($30) n scarves ($4) for very little money. I went 2 nyc hermes seminar whereas I saw the birkin being made by hand n it was amazing to see. I don't like hermes prices but it's cheaper flying 2 Paris with an appointment n buying ur bag. thk u. I bought a pre-loved JPG Birkin [I got the JPG because the strap was long enough to pretend to be a shoulder bag] and it was miserably heavy! I carried it a few times and sold it on. Those bags are suitable for athletes only; if you have shoulder issues and/or hand issues, keep looking for a lighter bag!

Thanks for this video! I never loved the look of this bag and the top handle would be a challenge for me. The other thing is I have seen some reallt infamous tacky celebs carrying the bag, and it kinda put me off. You are darling and I agree the bag in that color does suit you. It‘s just not for me.

There are ways to put a shoulder strap on your Birkin. Some influencers have done that. Ericas girly world did a video on how to do that. I have figured out my own way of putting shoulder straps on my Birkins. I use the shoulder strap when I want to be hands free or when my Birkin becomes too heavy.

I do really dislike the whole Hermes game. I think it’s tantamount to arrogance to reward your high spending customers with the chance to give you lots of their money in return for a bag that may or may not be the one they want. They have created this self perpetuating aura of prestige and people do mindlessly pursue the chance to buy an H quota bag. I just want what I want, a bit like you mentioned. I did buy a birkin but I went the preloved route and went for one that was slightly worn and less popular in colour and material. No games. No huge resale price tag. Just me having the control over my purchase and buying what I want.

Before social media no one except old rich ladies bought these kinds of bags. Anyone could go in to a shop and buy one. Everything that goes on now is a shrewd PR move.it’s a con. Suzanne- you are exactly right. My grandma had a Birkin. Even my mom thought it looked like an old lady bag and she wouldn’t get one because that’s exactly who was buying them. Times have changed for sure now it’s pure status. I’m sure the quality is great but so are many bags. Hermes is a master at what they do. My favorite Hermes con has to be the veiny leather defect. It’s a real defect and people love it they think their bag is original no sweetie it’s defective. My best friends husband owned a leather shop and he would sometimes come across the veiny leather. Some types of leather are very prone to veining. He rejected that leather every time. He said it was a defect. Oh well people probably don’t understand my love for Chanel either.

I feel that you end up paying the same if you go reseller or try to play the game. I’ve heard/seen on KZread people have to spend 1:1 or 1.25-1.5. Im a numbers girl and I think, Birkin 30 It’s approx *$9,800+ US not including sales tax. Resellers 13,000-30,000 USD. So you come out about the same if you’re lucky to be 1:1. *Don’t quote me on the price I tried really hard searching and no definite US price answer.

I love luxury items and I love all my bits but the fact you have to WORK to pay like £10k for a bag! Is ridiculous. I personally wouldn’t spend that much on a bag and I don’t look at someone with one like oooh they’re rich. I personally don’t like the look of the Birkin. I think they’re really basic and kind of ‘old lady’ style bag. I like totes and cross body so it’s not my style. If it makes you happy, yay. Love your best life.

The spend game is not for me. I’m happy to support a designer if they offer what I want when I’m ready. Feeling “pressured” to buy items I’m not keen on in order to get the piece I really want, is too much. Buying from reputable resellers works for me.

I'm glad you took it in good humour! On a serious note, I've never heard anyone talk about insurance. My daughter built up a substantial bag and jewellery collection over the years, including several high-end chanel bags (not at the now inflated prices) and the other recognised brands. The house was robbed, and to cut a very long story short, the insurance company decided we were under insured and got out of paying on a technicality. Please everyone ensure that these expensive items are covered within both household and individual insurance and read the fine print. Each time an expensive item is purchased add on and make sure you are not under insured. It's traumatic enough to be burgled but even more so when you're not covered.

It's not controversial for me as it's waaaaaay above my pay grade. I'm a 𝑳𝑽 gal through and through and have a reasonable side vintage collection with a few new ones thrown in. But I love and appreciate other brands, as I ❤️ handbags! Your 12 points are valid ones as it's easy to get swept away with all the hype from social media. I know I've fallen prey to it, too. I buy forever pieces, but I brought two purchases 𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙣𝙚𝙬, from the store that was influenced by KZreadrs. I didn't do my usual due diligence, as I would if I were buying preloved, so now I have a bag and an SLG that I love, but I have to force myself to use.
