12 MTB Knee Pads Ridden & Reviewed

Спорт

When it comes to safety equipment, after shoes and helmets, few things seem as important as knee pads. Mountain bike knee pads are simple enough, can be thin or burly and will help keep you riding in event of an unscheduled landing. Thanks to our friends at CompetitiveCyclist.com, we were able to get resupplied with freshies to make this video and group review happen. We are thankful to have the autonomy to select products we want to test, review and share with our readers. If you’ve never mountain biked in knee pads, are looking for a new set or just want to see what some of the other pads on the market have to offer, welcome and enjoy. Our best tip is to ensure you measure your leg, check the sizing chart and get the right pad for the job without going too overboard. If you get a pad that’s too hot, heavy or overbuilt for your application, then chances are you’ll get tired of hot and sweaty knees and you won’t wear them, which inevitably will be the day you crash! And, if you’re riding hard, shredding super rocky trails, then don’t buy something really thin and light, as chances are they’ll only protect you superficially and leave you hanging when your patella slams into a boulder at 20mph.

I really like the TLD Stage pads. Never have to adjust them. I have some poc and RaceFace that don't get used anymore due to comfort and slipping issues. Thanks for showing how they all look, fit, and bend on someone's legs.

One thing I think it's very valuable to talk about when discussing any sort of clothing type product is materials and stitching. My last pair of G Forms had some serious stitch failure after not too long and seemed much less well made than the pair I had gotten before. I'm definitely looking at trying another brand and am going to be looking for something that looks like it's well made.

I have had my set of tld Speed sleeve for probably 5 years now I have crashed in them ..... a lot! In uk woodland and rocky trails and they have been great and as for fit, once there on you forget you are wearing pands. One last plus is as you can imagine over this length of time they have been through the washer quite a bit and are still going strong 👍🏻

Late to the party, but enjoyed the review. Great job! I'm a 7iDP fan, and have been using the Sam Hill Lite version, as have 2 other family members. Recently purchased their "Transition knee/shin" pad and it is fantastic. I also just purchased their flex shorts, after a recent off bike experience that left me with a small bit of hip rash.

Great comparison, as good as the one on FF helmets. Obviously missing some interesting products like Leatt and RaceFace, but it’s pretty impossible to have all of them. I bought myself several of these to test them out on me: G-Form E-line, Endura MT500 HS, 7iDP Sam Hill, iXS Carve Race and POC Oseus VPD. The last 2 are not in the video, but are similar. Three things to myself: I’ve been riding Allmountain in the past 3 years, doing it a little bit harder lately. The second is I’ve been extremely happy with my iXS Flow Evo knee guards, but after all these years the upper part is falling a bit. And the third one is I’ve switched to flat pedals in the last months. My comments on the mentioned knee guards are: - POC VPD: awesome quality feel (starting with the packaging) and feel, very minimalistic, but still some side protection (which the iXS Flow miss). Very confortable as well, but the cons were: the side protection is rather quite low, not precisely on the knee itself (where I had some crashes), it lacks velcro strap (so I’m afraid it occurs the same as with my iXS Flow that end up falling a bit after some years), it lacks hard shell (which I turned to be convinced from the video to be a good thing) and with 140€ it is by far the most expensive (being quite similar to the budget friendly iXS Flow). - 7iDP: by far the cheapest one, very confortable as well and good protection but weird for me (I would have preferred to have a wider EVA protection on the knee itself), good long protection for flats but aesthetically way too long up and down. It lacks as well hard shell and velcro strap (although I saw no review complaining about dropping with time). It was as well surprisingly hot for how simple and breathable it looks. It was also noisy when moving the knee like pedaling. - G-Form E-Line: indeed very confortable and practical to be able to put on and off without having to take off your shoes (not so much in my case though), lovely hard shell, but by for the bulkiest (way too much for me), not only in the front, especially when standing up, but also on the sides (since there’s no tension behind pulling it back). Whereas it is probably the most protective of all 5, I found some critical spaces between the different pads, being able to touch directly the bones than with other pads. I found them also quite hot although the empty back provides some freshness. - Endura MT500 HS and iXS Carve Race: both my favorite ones and I had my doubts about the final decision since they are VERY similar. They both are very protective but not as bulky as the G-Forms, they have hard shell, both have velcro straps up and down and have a very similar length. The final decision was though based on little details: for the Endura I preferred the HS over the iXS’ (although having some holes is probably more breathable) and liked it having also silicon on the lower part. I found the side foam protection a bit thicker as well. And the velcro straps had some plastic ends which are extremely helpful for opening, but also much more prone to get caught with shorts. For the iXS it looked like it stood better in place after moving around and sitting, it had some thick protection above knee (which I never missed with my iXS Flows though), a thicker pad (which may be completely unscientific but provides more confidence), a bit wider pad which covered the inner knee bone a bit better and although thinner side protection, when touching with the fingers it looked all in all a bit better protected. The pad was also removable, which is absolutely no must, but another advantage. With a lucky offer when ordering they were also 6€ cheaper. So in the end, I went for the iXS as you may imagine, but it is very personal the decision, so I hope with this feedback someone can find something else as well.

Good job on this review, I thought you would include the Raceface pads. These are easiest to use and most comfortable. Plus you don't have to take your shoes off to put them on. That's a win right there. On IXS, I wanted them to work but if you are a bigger guy, they WON'T FIT. I tried the XL and couldn't get them over my calf. Enter in Raceface...

Oh great, yet another MTB KZread channel I have to follow lmao. You make by far the best content on gear though. I was a BMX rider for a number of years. In that time I wouldn't wear any gear. Started wearing a helmet at the skatepark a couple years back. Plus would occasionally throw on some G Form shin pads under my jeans when trying to learn something new (slipping a pedal is annoyingly common in BMX lol.) But now that I'm getting a little bit older, my body just isn't able to take the same hits that it used to. Paying more attention to proper safety gear for riding the mountains. I do have to admit, I am being drawn to Fox knee pads to match the logo on my helmet as stupid as that sounds haha. But luckily, they make some great helmets and knee pads (where they are lacking in some other categories.)

Good reviews!. I actually love the POC VPD 2.0 , not the VPD system which sucks. I also use 100% Trailcamps as a light weight XC/ trail pad, which have been great. I agree with the hard cap knee pad assessment on gnarly terrain. Good job on the G form collaboration, I thought the original ones were terrible in the protection dept. but the E Lines look solid! Sam Hill are awesome too.

What you said about the POCs is spot on. The curve is digging in to ur shin and is really painful. I got the VPD airs instead which are much better than the Systems. I have friends who ride the systems which says that they are good after they warm up. If I cant even stand up with them on without pain they will never warm up. Avoid.

I have both as well - VPD Air and just got the Systems in December. The Air pads are just too small and low on the thigh. I did noticed the shin pain with the Systems right out of the box, but they get much better with time. Now, I’d say the System is more comfy but I wouldn’t put them in the downhill class.

11:12 I've crash tested the Leatt Airflex Pro, don't use them for gnarly riding, only for XC riding or flow trails, no falling off 1m rock rollers, and smashing knee into rocks. I was in agony but managed to get home, but I got huge swelling, and could not bend my legs enough to walk normally for 3 days, but it took at least over a week before I was good enough to ride, but I am good now. But I got the new Pearl Izumi Elevate knee and elbow pads. they have a 1cm thick D3O pad, they are removable too, the pads are easy to put on, when the knee is straight the D3O pad gets lifted off the leg which adds more air flow, the D3O pad has many vents. the sleeves at the thigh is long, if you pull it up high enough the pads fit securely. You should definitely check out these pads, I've only had few rides on them, but I don't get soaked in sweat, no get rashes, even when riding in temps close to 30C, still warm, but not overheating. and I actually notice the breeze trough the vents. but with Poc VPD2.0 DH pads I would get soaked in sweat and get rashes at the leg.

They don't offer the protection and are much less comfortable than either of the other pads unfortunately. I wore them for 5.5 miles and the last mile wore raw spots around the zippers on both legs. Kinks, scratchy and just uncomfortable. Reliability alone is a deal breaker. I think it's a decent idea, but they really lack quality, protection and comfort. ION and IXS are noticeably better quality products, even after a few years of abuse. Maybe I got what I paid for I dunno lol! Thanks again for the testing though.

Hey thank you so much Jay for the feedback and we're super bummed to hear about your issues. We hate knowing people spent money on products we suggest and didn't work out...Unfortunately these things do have a lot of variable like personal preference, body shape/thickness etc. Is there a chance the pads weren't sized quite right and could have caused the irritation? Either way, we're sorry to hear it didn't work out but appreciate you reaching out. Drew

@@TheLoamWolf all good Drew 🤙🏻. The sizing was good. One zipper failed out of the box lol! I've got a return started and re ordered another pair of K pact's. They're super comfy out of the box, offer better protection and deal with a lot. I've even used them for ground work for hours lol! Lots of washings too. They still stink haha! I finally broke the padding after 3 years. Thanks again man! 🤙🏻😁

I bought the gform e lines you like but they were just too bulky for me. When I would straighten my leg I'd get that gap in between knee cap and pad and it just felt like they stuck out so far. Maybe they'd get better with use. I think I want to try the Sevens or Endura

  • @paradox963

It's interesting everybody is just built different, I tried the G form, and they were the least comfortable pads, couldn't get a size that fit right either too loose and wouldn't stay in place or way too tight. But for me the POC's are super comfortable whether climbing in the mountains or summer rides if Florida, and the protection is top-notch. I think if there is one thing people should take from any type of review like this is you have to try things on and see what works for you.

Great video, thanks. I'm a Fox used so I'm trying to decide between Launch D3O and Launch Pro D3O (not in this video). I can see that the Launch is more pedal friendly than the Pro, but I'm concerned about Lauch durability in case of a crash. The Pro have those plastic shells, but may be not so pedal friendly. I'm a trail rider, not enduro, trying to improve, so in some cases, crashes comes. I my last crash my left knee (in wich a had a surgery six months ago) was injured by a small rock, since my current knee pads didn't made the job, so I'm looking for something really protective, without sacrify pedaling. What about durability from Launch model in ocasional crashes? How it works for a 8 to 10 miles trail alternating pedaling and downhilling?

Good luck! Just remember there is a point where too much armor and bulk can actually start to be a detriment if you're so stiff, hot and thinking about the heat/discomfort of all the pads. Obviously you need to do what's best for you, but before you dress up like the michelin man, remember you need to be both comfortable, free to move dynamically, AND protected. Good luck!

What size did you guys test out of the Endura MT 500 hard shells? Was it the S/M size because that's all Competitive Cycling has in stock. When I got to Endura's website their size guide is way different than most knee pads. They say a S/M goes up 57cm thigh which is pretty thick! For instance the Fox D3O launch size L only goes up to 47cm for the thigh.

That's a tough one, sizing down you might run into the pads being too tight around the cuff's, especially after a day of riding but you could also run into issues sizing up with them being loose. Ideally, it might be best to find them at a local bike shop and try them on to see which fits best.

Well, that's a tough one as different body shapes, sweat levels and leg hair could affect this. Also we've found that riding pants pull pads down more than shorts too! the Ion's stay tight as do the Fox pads thanks to the double straps, the Kali's large silicone gripper also helps a lot. Ensuring you've got the snuggest possible size that doesn't cut off circulation is also important. Good pads typically fit well and stay put. Good luck!
