***** Hey Dave, I need a laptop for school next year, and for now I'm going with the new Lenovo y50-70 4k. I also want it to be able to play some games that's why I picked it over other laptops. The only downsides are that it`s 24mm(0.944 inches) thick (that wouldn't bother me so much because the design is amazing in my opinion) and the screen runs at 48 hertz...apart from that everything is perfect at it. The price is pretty good as well (1200€). Sooo would you recommend it to me ? Or maybe some other notebooks that don't cost more than $1300. Or could you do a review of the y50 XD ? Please answer because I really don't know what to do right now XD. Oh yeah, these are the specs : Intel® Core™ I7-4710HQ 2,5 Ghz (turbo boost to 3,5) 16 GB DDR3-RAM 3840x2160 Pixel display NVIDIA Geforce GTX-860M 4 GB version 512 GB SSD 2,4 kg (5.29 pounds) 24mm(0.944 inches) thick

The inspiration behind this MacBook is that a lot of people don't use ports on their computers anymore. An increasing number of users are using online cloud services to share files. So it's not a compromise for those people; in fact, the new MacBook is better without the ports that some users will hardly use.

Jake Huyett If you don't have a camera, you can't take pictures. There is no option. But a laptop doesn't have a USB port, you have alternatives. Cloud sharing services, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for file sharing, and AirPlay for screen-mirroring.

I adore this little beauty.. everything works soooo well. This 12” is fucking gorgeous in it’s own right. Just severely underpowered and needed better keys on the keyboard. I just realized I know nothing on the sound, like how are the speakers sounding type shit.

People keep repeating that it doesn't do much for its price, but then you need to remember what you're paying for. In this case you're not exactly paying for processing power and the ability to render 4K videos -- you're paying for the design, construction, lightweight, and (of course) style of the laptop that has fairly long-lasting battery-life and is more than capable of doing your regular note-taking / desk job. In a gaming PC, you don't have to pay for the computer to be compact and small with all aluminum plates -- so instead the money you pay is spent on ramping up the hard drive and other specs. A sports car and a tow truck are both cars, but they serve different functions. Yes, you're paying a shitload of money for a Ferrari and maybe still driving the same distance a cheap truck can take you, and hell it can't even tow a car, but it's "worth it" to someone who wants the style, the horsepower, the look, for whatever reason. If you want a hardcore computer, for playing games on high FPS and rendering 4K videos, go get that. If you want to look cool with Apple branded, light weight, "pioneer tech", intended for web surfing and word processing, go ahead and spend your money.

A 2015 notebook that can't chug through CS:GO or DOTA2. Wow. Pricey paperweight ya got there. Single port is unforgivable. There is no getting used to lack of functionality. Good review as always.

Gerad Guitrez If it won't run low demand games like CS:GO and Dota 2 it speaks to the performance capabilities of the machine. For the price this laptop is absurdly underpowered. Only having a single port is also a joke. Can't use USB storage while charging? Absurd.

bobbypaycheque less people use external USB port storage in 2015 less than ever in computing history. Every one is moving toward cloud storage and there's plenty of fast SSD storage inside. Multiple port is over rated, haven't use a USB port in years and if you really know you need them you would go for another one in their line up. Lawyers, medical field and many other people that work from a table at Starbucks this computer is plenty powerful for what they will be doing. It may be a bit over priced but not by much when you place it with the rest of their line up and match ram and storage size to their MacBook Air counterpart, and that's how it has always been with first gen device. Still you get a good retinal display, good keyboard and great trackpad all in a one pound, super thin laptop. The entire purpose of this is portability. Just because is underpowered to you it is not underpowered for every one. Personally I would wait for the 2nd gen. but this still a great product for a 1st generation.

Gerad Guitrez A nobody hack screenwriter is moving toward the cloud maybe, but big business requires the security of more secure local options. Also, where exactly do you plug in an external monitor on this? Plug it into the charge port and go back to a single monitor when it needs to be charged? Absurd. Like the reviewer said, all of these inconveniences add up to be a major inconvenience. If I were spending 1800 bucks on a laptop I wouldn't be 'working around' anything. The laptop would be fully featured. Steve Jobs wouldn't have gone for this nonsense, say what you like about him but he always put functionality first. Since his passing Apple has gone out of the computer business and into the fashion accessory business. I don't get the sense anyone at apple test drives these things anymore.

Great review that I concur with completely having played with one in stores over the last few weeks to evaluate it. The keyboard is a primary example of form over function. As a designer myself, I can see now Jony Ive on the drafting table ensuring that all the rectangles that make up the MacBook keyboard align, with no ugly gaps that would spoil the uniform slab of cracked black embedded in sexy coloured alumin(i)um. In reality world, the chunkier keyboards are the most comfortable and impose less stress on your finger bones. I'm typing this on a superb 10 year old Dell SK-8135 desktop keyboard that cost me 5 pounds used, about $7! Full size full throw keys, tactile volume control knob and media controls etc. Makes a huge difference to typing speed and accuracy, and there's no finger pain. What Apple should have done is to have retained the MacBook Air keyboard (not worrying about machine thinness), replaced the screen with this new superb retina display, and of course, used the new fanless internals. Oh, and added a second USB C port like the superb Google Pixel 2 Chromebook. Not to mention an SD card slot! I'm at a loss as to who the MacBook 2015 is aimed at... Writers? They don't need the retina display, but they do need a good keyboard - so the 11" MBA handles that market. Photographers? No way! Not enough power to handle large 20MP RAW files from a Nikon D3 or Canon 1D nor an SD card slot for quick file transfer. (USB 2.0 is way too slow and no cameras offer USB 3 or C yet.) Video? Enough said. Gamers? 1300 for a toy computer? No way Jose! It sounds crazy, but there is only ONE application for this machine, Adobe Illustrator - my own use. You don't need the keyboard much for graphic design, other than function hot keys and captions. The screen is high res and offers good colours for print and web colour matching. The CPU and SSD are more than enough for working on vector images that are less processor intensive.

Spot on review. For those who're curious about the battery life issue, I've found I commonly get nine hours of video playback or more on one charge by only lessening the screen brightness by 20% or so. After owning and traveling extensively with this 12" MacBook for 1 1/2 years, I call this my very light yet delightful machine that has plenty of memory (mine has 512 GB), great sound, and remarkable battery life. Not bad for a real notebook that only weighs a scant 2 pounds. A solid secondary laptop that heavy tech users will enjoy. Apple keeps proving, lightweight notebooks with a lovely screen and great sound makes this rather pricey machine well worth it over the long haul.

I am coming from a 15" MBP Late 2008 (8gb RAM and SSD) and I got the MacBook 1.3Ghz to replace it. Sad to say but the MBP from 2008 is faster. I really don't want to return this computer because it is just so sexy but I am thinking I will have to. Scrolling through webpages is slow, can't playback KZread videos and 2x speed @ 720p without it being choppy. Sad day. EDIT/Update: So I went back to the apple store and tried using their MacBook again and it worked great. The only difference was I was using Safari at the Apple Store and Chrome at home. I tried KZread at home with Safari and it ran great, even with 4k video. Chrome, not so much. I am not the only one with speed issues with Chrome. Here is what worked for me. Updated Chrome to the current beta and installed chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/h264ify/aleakchihdccplidncghkekgioiakgal?hl=en-US which forces KZread to serve H.264 videos instead of VP8/VP9 videos. This made the difference and now I can use Chrome + KZread and watch videos at 2x speed without hickups. I am keeping the MacBook now.

Charles for real? Wow, I was thinking it could easily do playback of any quality without any issues. But if you say that it also struggles with simple day to day entertainment usage, then I may reconsider now.

+thexmark I've been using mine since they came out and haven't had a single hiccup. Netflix, Hulu, etc., work just fine for me. Many people have crummy connection and or so much trash on their system that they blame the hardware when it's really a user related problem that they're having. This does what you'd expect a new macbook air to do. For most tasks, you will not see a difference in performance. Those who do notice a performance difference usually purchased the wrong computer for their intended usage.

Just can't dig out one thing: This 12" rMB uses a 29W external charger/adapter to power and/or charge its battery. In fact, you can also see 14.5Vdc/2.0A inscribed under the back cover... If so, how can you charge this thing with an external battery bank, which normally has a 2.1A or so but 5.0Vdc output? How can you charge a 14.5Vdc device only using 5.0Vdc?

+Dave Lee Thanks for the prompt reply... Can you remember the exact specs/features of the power bank you have used for this testing? You say "very very slowly" but you also mentioned it wii take 5 hrs. to charge from the power bank vs. 2.5 hrs. charging from the original charger adapter. That much, I can't really say "very very slowly". But I still cannot understand the physics behind it: how can you charge a load that should be fed with 14.5Vdc, only with a source of 5.0Vdc? (the opposite case may be possible, if some precautions can be taken..., btw)

I'm an electronics engineer, dated from 1976 (graduation) and I know what a "switch mode power supply" is. Such circuits can convert a higher voltage (actually a sinusoidal higher voltage) to a lower DC (or very much equivalent to DC) voltage. But they do not multiply the rated output voltage of an external power bank. And they shouldn't bcz. you actually need to use those outputs at 5Vdc (stabilized) to charge smart phones, tablets or the like.. which cannot be charged with more than 5Vdc. In any case, if there would be some other kind of voltage multiplier inside those power banks there has to be a output voltage selector switch or otherwise a sensing circuitry to decide which level of output voltage to be used... I believe those power banks don't have that kind of built-in magic, either...

"..if you force yourself to only use this one port, you'll get used to it". Well, if you put your fingers in between the door and slam it shut every morning, for weeks on end, you'll get used to that too. Getting used to something is far from experiencing something as pleasant :) As for the keyboard, everyone keeps saying "Apple had to make the keyboard so thin to fit it in here". No, they didn't have to, it was a specific choice they made. You mentioned the best example yourself: the Asus UX305. That ultrabook is even ever so slightly thinner, but it still has a "regular" laptop keyboard. The same goes for the ports, Apple explicitly chose to not put more ports on this device. They could have easily done it, and imo they should have, but they didn't. This is basically in line with their marketing strategy: give people something new and interesting, but give them something that leaves them wanting more. I wouldn't be surprised if the version 2 of this device will have an extra USB port (USB A or C) and an SD-card reader. It's also quite funny that the Macbooks have really good speakers, this one as well, better then most other laptops/ultrabooks. However, Apple's phones and tablets have very mediocre sound, with rubbish single bottom mounted speakers instead of dual front facing ones.
