12" Guitar Speaker Shootout | Reverb Demo Video

Музыка

Guitarists spend tons of time and money on searching for the best tones, but an oft-overlooked game-changer is your speaker selection. It’s much easier to swap out amp speakers than you might think, and will make a world of difference if you’re looking to switch up your sound. Joe demonstrates this in real time using the Eminence CV-75, the Celestion G12H-75 Creamback, and the Hempopotamus HEMP-O Model 30 all in the same amp. If you don’t believe us, watch for yourself.

Agreed! I think the problem with these sort of tests is that certain speakers sound better with certain amps and at certain EQ settings. I've heard the creamback sound amazing with high gain before, but it didn't sound good in this test.

The Eminence was the most versatile, sounding good in all usage cases. In the clean and lower gain settings, the Creamback did have certain harmonics and transients that the other speakers didn't, but that led to an untidy metal sound. The Hemp-o...I'm sure that you could get a good sound out of it, but it was a distant third here. Unless you were specifically getting the speaker to live under a plexi and play classic rock tones, I'd go with the Eminence.

If I didn't know any better, I would say this shootout's main goal was to destroy Hempopotamus.... If that was not the goal... I'll go out on a limb and say that's what happened here. The Hempopotamus sounded like Creamback, but with 3 wet blankets drapped over the cabinet.

CV75 is an easy winner here. Way more musical than the others. It’s probably one of the best all around speakers out there. I bought one from amp maker Joe Morgan. I asked for his unbiased opinion on it and he said, “Eminence knocked it out of the park with this speaker.” I installed it in my cab and he wasn’t lying. Don’t be dissuaded by the “British” moniker, it sounds fantastic for everything.

I really wanted to like the Hempopotamus because it's a small company consistently using the #1 environmentally friendly material, which should be replacing all non-recycled paper and plastics. But the Eminence definitely had the edge in nailing classic tones. Hempopotamus did have something in the metal chug department, though. Eminence does make some hemp speakers, too, though, would like to see them in a shootout. I'd also like to encourage Hempopotamus to keep going. I might have preferred their speaker with different equipment ahead of it, or maybe I just haven't heard my perfect Hempopotamus yet. I'll be keeping an eye on them.

Eminence CV-75. I replaced the 12" "stock speakers" in a Line 6 Spider IV 2X12 amp with one CV-75 and one Eminence Red Coat and the amp sounds at least 5 times better than it did before the upgrade. Cost me $200.00 to do it - but I feel the results I got are worth the $$. Too bad the amp weighs a TON now. The new speakers added about 15lbs. Prior to doing this upgrade, that Line 6 Spider amp wasn't really "loud enough" - or I should say that the stock speakers would distort too easily when playing w/ the band. After the upgrade I could easily compete - volume-wise.

I use a celestion v30 in one orange cab and an Eminence Swamp thang (150 rms watts) in another and they are great. I love the Eminence cause it really has great lows an highs and can handle 100watts if you wanna just carry one cab but still get loud enough pristine clean tone. But together the eminence covers lows an highs an the v30 covers the mids. I use them together 90% of the time but they both sound excellent on their own just in very different ways. The v30 has the British thing happening with the focused mids and the swamp thang is very American sounding as it really focuses on the lows an highs.

The not high version: Eminence. This version: I'm looking at a 5 year old video, man I'm old. I have a Evm12L the best boring speaker ever. I love it, puts out exactly what I put into it. So looking for another kind of 12 to stack on top of a TL806 copy cab to add some character. That hemp speaker made JoeReverb speed up and play different. It also sounded like a tambourine at times. I hated it? But then It had some weird lovely moments. I think it had the best/most "character". You could tell, it messed with JoeReverb's timing. This was of interest because I have clean and bass-y covered by the EV. It might be a weird devils advocate speaker to pair with the EVM12L. The Emmy or Cel were solid, good, and what you expect. If I was using a lot of pedals I'd go with Emmy. The Cel had a sweet tone on its own. The room and the cab would change all that crap. For the money Emmy is like $100(US made/brit sound). Cel is $150(brit made/brit sound). Hemp-O, they don't sell that model any more, but you have a 15 day money back on all the models, made in the usa, weed, and they're trying. This shootout made me go to their Hempsite. I have an old Jensen that needs a new cone and they actually have them. I get my torn Jensen back, yay! Maybe the Jensen(40 watt) with the EVM12L(200 watt, huge watt spread). weed. what? Did you hear that? ohhhh maaaaaaaan.

For clean and low gain, the Creamback. High gain, Eminence CV-75. The Hempo has an interesting, kinda lo-fi tone. Would be cool for certain applications, but not all the time. I'm guessing the Eminence CV-75 is comparable to a Celestion Vintage 30 which is probably why I preferred it for high gain. The Celestion H-75 Creamback had a warmer, smoother, "creamier" tone.

I really think eminence makes the most versatile speaker in this shootout. They really put the value for dollar into their speakers. You just get a lot more out of eminence speakers IMO. I can see how someone would like the creamback though, very fancy sounding but so damn pricey! Though that hempopotamus sounded best to me with the dimebag riffs. Shoulda used a humbucker guitar though for that metal portion of the demo. Mic placement also has a huge effect on tone.

Yea that’s the problem surprisingly with slot of demos, people don’t seem to understand how to mix a cab for a decent sound. Putting the mic right in the middle just makes it sound much brighter and tiny then what it really sounds like. So if it sounds full right in the center then in real life it’s gonna be much darker at a distance . That being said for recording, if you need to record with the mic like they then I’d go with the fuller sounding speaker , but how often is anyone forced to mic like that and only that way , basically never

Those are pretty much my thoughts too. The Eminence sounded the best all around. The Hempo was possibly the best for the metally chug sound, but it didn't have the spatial characteristics of the other two. The Celestion possibly sounded best on the Tom Petty jangly strums. But then you can't discount the fact that a Tele was used. If a Les Paul was used, possibly I'd have a different leaning

Dial in a HEMPO in it's "sweet spot", and you'll have a religious 3D experience with ANY type music.. That was the dis advantage to how the HEMPO is to be used... The amp dials were all flat, and favored towards the others big time.. "Dial in" each speaker individually, and see what happens... We've done it!!!

The Celestion G12 Creamback according to my ears is the best

  • @gardenstateflatlandb

Eminence all day. For all styles. What my ears liked anyway. They should swap names with the Celestion cuz it definitely sounded way creamier. Feeling...uh...I feel...um...I...ER...hated the Hempopotamus. Very strange time across the frequency spectrum. But...maybe that's a good thing. Think it would highly depend on what sound you're shooting for. Def not a jack of all trades type speaker. You gotta be aiming for ODD to begin with, and I think it'll fill the slot. Celestion was maybe a hair harsh. Could've been from using the same mic placement for All 3. All speakers have different sweet spots for mic'ing. Kool vid!

Then if I have a digital pedalboard and I want to make my fender suitable, what should I buy?? I see celestion 12 H 75 creamback is too much low and high, and the eminence is more balanced, and the hipopotamus is crap. I dont play too much hi-gain, so celestion 12 h is the one I wouldnt buy. But then what would you do to use digital pedalboards? what would you buy? (12')

Would be happy with the Celestion or Eminence. I swapped out the stock Jensen speaker for a Celestion Redback G12H 125w 8ohm on my Fender Deluxe Reverb 65 re-issue, and the sound improvement is significant. Easy DIY and relatively cheap upgrade.

From these 3, I only like the Eminence. The Celestion also sounds ok, but I doubt it will work in a band, I think the Eminence will be much more present.

The EVM12L Classic can't hold a candle to the original EV12L speaker. Only modern speaker that comes (very) close is the Eminence Legend EM12.

Good demo! Not a speaker guy but maybe I should pay closer attention! The differences here are undeniably dramatic. Changing speakers changes tone almost as if switching guitars really. I have no idea which one I'd vote for.

I think it's the biggest change you can make other than pedals. The speaker is what makes the sound we hear after-all.

The celestion was really nice on cleans, the eminence was tops on high gain both were equal on overdrive but i'd have to get high and jam along with the national geographic channel to get with what was going down on the hemp thing.

As great of a concept the hempopotamus speaker is, I only see it being good for pantera style high gain. The eminence was the best as a whole. I was surprised that I didn’t like the celestion, something about it just sounded a bit... off. Maybe I just don’t like the creamback?

I have been leaning towards putting a Creamback in my 1x12 Marshall cab to be used with my DSL1HR, but this video has stopped me in my tracks. Shocked at how much I like the Red Coat. I'd like to hear a comparison between it and the Greenback now.

Cant go wrong with either. Those are my 2 favorite speakers. I would go with the Greenback. A Marshall needs Greenback speakers. But really, the Eminence is a bit cheaper, and sounds amazing. It's actually pretty close to a Greenback.

Speakers have many nuances that need to be captured in a demo such as: 1) frequency response (how much bass / low mid punch / upper mid-treble bite / and harmonic presence. Does one stand out more than the others? what is the shape of the sound? V shaped like a mid recessed Jensen P12N? Or like a Celestion greenback mountain shaped with prominent low & upper mids and not much bass or presence? 2) timbre - what character does the speaker have at certain frequency areas / forward or spaced sounding (eg, many Eminence speakers are very forward sounding) is it smooth or woody or spikey? 3) articulation - how clear does the speaker sound in these frequency ranges, how much space is there between the notes - a mushy bass range has notes close together and indistinguishable) 4) transient response - how quick does the speaker move to perform its duty? a bit like how higher sample rates sound more accurate to the instrument. Taking these and many other factors into account is important but you then have to match it to an amp and guitar. A bright amp with recessed mids would do better with a warm speaker like the hemp types (this also does wonders for low wattage and cheap sounding pcb amps. A mid focused amp like Super Lead or Jcm800 would be better with some upper mids & presence control of a mellow speaker. A dark and wooly speaker like a Boogie wont be needing a hemp speaker (sorry Carlos S.) It would be better with a punchy and articulate speaker (probably ceramic). And then take all that, mix them how ever you want and add to taste with your spices. wallah!
