okay i just found out abt the controversies surrounding the book. TJ Klune actually used the cultural genocide against indigenous children that occured in the 60s in Canada as his book's inspiration. The book still is a great read but i thought that people should know more about the issue that still continues to affect indigenous people.

Cool, I've been reading Tropic of Cancer except I like to pretend the character Van Norden is like a Bailey Jay, mite write my own book think I'll call it "Beyond the Valley of Penises"
I used to be such a huge reader, but college and job stress killed it. Last week one of my friends was asking for book recommendations and I started going though a mental list of all the books I used to love. And then I had a stupid idea to write down a list of all the books that had an impact on my life. That was a huge trip down memory lane. I discovered that nearly every book I ever read is a part of me. I might have hated the character, disliked writing style, or straight up discarded books, but they're still a part of me. My personally is a hodge podge of my favorite characters. Now I'm trying to get back into what I love and just looking for some good reads.

It is one of the best books I’ve ever read and I thank you so much for recommending it, I don’t think I’ll find anything as magical again. It changed my perspective on so many things! Happy new year!

Personally, my lengthy reading slump (lasted a couple of years) was due to being in a terrible place mentally. Most of the time I just couldn't muster up the energy to do any reading; and when I could, I would abandon the book at the first indication of a challenge for the protagonist. I just didn't have the mental energy to work through *any* sorta conflict/challenge, even the fictional ones. But once my mental health improved, I went right back to reading ... Personally, it helped me to give up my obsession with reading for a bit - I just accepted "yeah, I was a bookworm, I no longer am, and that's okay". I started listening to a lot of podcasts to fill my time and cut myself some slack about not reading.

I stopped reading for 6 years. I went from devouring 2 books a week to completely forgetting that reading was a hobby. The break coincided with university entrance exams, the university itself and the job search. Over the years I have been noticing that when my life undergoes important changes it's impossible for me to sit for hours and escape reading. I have come to the conclusion that when there're vital changes that affect my life, my mind feels the need to dedicate its effort and energy to adapt to the situation, because it is instinctive. The insecurity and uncertainty that changes produce, makes me unable to concentrate for hours on something that apparently isn't of vital importance. I don't know if it will be your case, but if it is, rest assured that when life calms down you will read again, because if it's something you like to do, you will find yourself returning to it eventually. There is no need to force it, maybe your attention is just focused in something that requires all your attention.
I've heard so much about The House at the Cerulean Sea but never actually considered reading it until I've heard you speak about it. You really have a gift for this, I literally always leave your videos with my TBR so much longer than before.

The Shadow of the Wind is the book that got me into reading and it's hands down my favourite book ever! Highly recommend
I've been in a two-year reading slump. I'm pretty sure Shadow of the Wind was somewhat responsible for the slump, but I love the way you talk about the books you love! The aliebn graphic novel is one of my favourites though, so cute and precious.
Hannah, your voice is so soothing. I’ve read a few of these books you recommend in this video and this is such a great list.
Salt to the sea was the only book that could get me out of my slump and I LOVE the book so much it finally got me to explore and read more books.
how did you know i needed this video???? Also The Silent Patient! I haven’t read in YEARS but I literally read this book in THREE DAYS - I read 100(ish) pages the first two days and then read 120 pages the third day. I could not put it down. Yes, I do have a lot of free time.

Hello dear, how are you doing?
thank u hannah for posting this right when i’m in a reading slump ❤️❤️❤️ love u and ur content
Another non-fiction book I can recommend is Know My Name by Chanel Miller. It's written so that even non native english speakers (aka me) can understand it easily while it's also written beautifully and with so much heart. Her story is very hard to read about but also you won't be able to put it down ♡ And a graphic novel that has a lot of depth and character even in its first volume is Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples.
This video came at the perfect time. My depressive episode that I’m currently in is killing me and causing a major reading slump and I’m so anxious bc my first semester of college starts in 6 days. Some of these books are sitting on my shelves so I’m totally going to pick them up❤️❤️

hi, hannah! i'm not really one for the comments but i just want to say that the books you've recommended through years have made me love reading even more, and helped me get out of terrible slumps. some of my all-time favorites, i only picked up the first time because of your videos and i couldn't be more grateful enough. thank you for sharing us not only the books you love, but also the reasons why you love them and the impact it had on you. it's not only that, but the way you poignantly put and express it into words, makes me even appreciate these books more and realize how lovely it is to read. thank you very much! xoxo
I appreciate how devoted you are to get me out of my reading slump
I’m slowly getting out of my six month reading slump and Persepolis helped! I’m also reading Heartstopper vol.1 and The Picture of Dorian Gray
I would recommend “Fun Home” by Alison Bechdel, it’s also a graphic novel autobiography! Highly recommend it 💕

I LOVED Daisy Jones and the Six! I read the physical copy and then listened to the audio book right after I finished reading it😂 it did put me into a bit of a reading slump just because that story felt so real and I wanted more. So I waited to read anything until I could get my hands on another Taylor Jenkins Reid book, which was Evelyn Hugo, and it had the same effect on me😂
some of these books actually did help me massively to get out of a reading slump!! thank you so much for this video!
It feels like this video was made for me 💗 yesterday i had planned to listen to an audiobook but i wasn’t really in the mood to read another book. And a part of me was saying that I shouldn’t push myself to read but another part of me was saying that I should take advantage of the free time I still have since uni is starting. And today I find that hannah has blessed me with another video 💗💗💗 legit just made my day better ✨
The shadow of the wind is my all time favorite book too!! After read this, I collected all of Zafon's books. It's so sad that I can't read his new novel anymore😭
A book about books recommendation: the dictionary of lost words by pip williams. A fictional retelling (with historically accurate details) of the making of the Oxford dictionary. It quickly became one of my favorite all time books. You’ve got a look into the English language, classism, feminism, romance, sexism. It was so well done!
You are the only person I haven't skipped the commercial for! You speak very well and I like your choices of glasses!
I read Sadie sometime early this year and WOW.. I was completly blown away because it is so captivating. I finished it in the middle of the night because I couldn't stop reading

Everytime I listen to you talk about a book, makes me want to read one. Ahhh your passion is just ,,, wow you are magical!!
What helped me getting me out of my reading slump this summer was reading extraordinary real life survival stories. I just can't stop reading whenever I get to one of these books because its so fascinating. For example "Jungle" by Yossi Ghinsberg, he survivad in the amazonas all by himself in extreme conditions and there are some very mysterious happenings in the story aswell that still to this date has not been solved. I read one other about two female journalist getting lost in the Kalahari desert and survived on their wits all by themselves (but its not in english) My next read probably is gonna be one about a man that got lost for a long time at sea on his fishing boat.
I love graphic novels they help with my anxiety at night. The Anne of Green gables graphic novel is so cute. I love the Persepolis movie but I weirdly have yet to read the book. I did read “Embroideries” by the same author and it was so good!
I used to love to read a lot. It has been 3 years I think since I last read regularly. I wish to come back to the good old days because i genuinely loved reading and getting lost in a book, but it has been so long since I found a book that got me reading and I’m so happy YT recoed your channel ✨🥺💕

Love the way you have categorized the suggestions! I have been wanting to read The house in the cerulean sea and The shadow of the wind for a while now. This video did not make me want to read them any less.. Great video!
I bought in the dream house from your earlier recommendations. It was absolutely incredible especially coming out of a relationship that really paralleled the memoir
Im trying to get out of a very long reading slump cuz I’m taking AP Lit this year and then going to college for creative writing so this is much appreciated lol
I loved The Starless Sea! Another book I always go back to to bust a slump is The History of Love, by Nicole Krauss.
Thank you Hannah for recommending all these books 📖 I love reading the same genres of books as you ( magical books, books about books, poetry books,… ). This list of yours will help me make my own list of books I’ll read.
It makes me so happy to see you posting so soon again
"A story about stories" is EXACTLY how I'd describe The starless sea
The book that gets me out of a reading slump is a) a good first sentence or paragraph b) a likable, smart main character c) accessible, easy to understand d) lots of dialogue and e) minimal descriptions of the terrain. I know. Just give me a good mystery!! When I’m not in a slump I enjoy some magical realism or sci-fi.
Thank you for your recommendations! I was finally able to finish a book again after I got into a reading slump a couple months back.
The way you describe the starless sea is exactly how I do. Great recommendations 👌
I just read "The Poet X" because of your recommendation. It was incredibly good! Thank you for introducing Elizabeth Acevedo to me.
Loved this video and recommendations! The Shadow of the Wind is literally one of my favorite books ever!! If you like that book, then I highly suggest checking out "A Trip to the Stars" by Nicholas Christopher. I randomly got this when I bought one of those "Date With a Book" items and was shocked I fell in love with it as much as I did considering I had no idea what title I'd be getting.
I love Sarah Kay. I first heard her when she & Phil Kaye came to do a poetry reading at my high school back in (I believe) 2012 and I am still to this day a huge fan of theirs.
I really need to thank you. I read The House In The Cerulean Sea because of you and I really really liked it! I think I’m going to reread it soon because I want to read it slowly this time around. I really love how the author takes their time focusing on the characters and it’s descriptive enough that you feel like you are on that island with them.
Hannah is SO magical and I already feel like I'm already out of my reading slumber ;)))
I dnf’d The Starless Sea. I feel like you either love it or hate it. I loved The Night Circus though.
Buzzing to see Sarah Kay on your list. Her spoken word version of "B" (If I should have a daughter) is the most beautiful poem I've ever heard and I immediately bought a copy of No Matter The Wreakage, after hearing it. She has a beautiful way with words.
There's just something about your voice that makes me feel calm. Hearing you talk about anything at all helps with my anxiety, honestly.
Reading slumps are very common. An excellent way to get out of it is to read a wonderful book. It can be a natural mood enhancer. All The Light You Cannot See is a book that always boosts me out of my reading slumps.
I'm just getting out of a slump myself, I started rereading my all time favorite series and it's been helping. Such an underrated gem.
just randomly saw your channel and you recommended my favorite book of all time shadow of the wind that i never see anyone talk about. wonderful
I'd love it if you could make a video on how to get over procrastination as well😭 I've heard you talking about how you used to deal with it too, and would like if you could share what helps you get over it.
