Picking paint LAST is a surefire way to make your room design more cohesive and well planned. Which of these design rules will you break after watching this video?

Letting your space evolve with you is really the best advice. People want a fully finished perfected space out of the box, but that’s not how any of it works. You can’t manufacture an authentic lived-in feel, you just kinda have to… live in it.

I love that! Exactly my sentiment. I always tell my clients, live in the space for awhile and I’ll be back to finish it up. Trust, your flow evolves as you understand your space and needs 👏

I have hardwood floor in my kitchen. I LOVE it. It feels great under foot, things don't break when you drop them, and it is timeless. Everyone thinks it's brand new, but we've had it for 28 years now.

I believe very heavily in every single one of these rule breakers. Throughout my life many of these were in our home mostly for financial reasons (i.e. hand-me-downs & can't afford full furniture set at one time.) Probably why I like this idea so much. It "hurts my eyes" 😅 to see matchy-matchy furniture, woods, or bath fixtures in a home. 😅 Just do what makes you happy in your own home. Our stuff isn't matchy-matchy, but it looks good together, and I like it. 😊

I remember all too well about 11 years ago when I did a whole house renovation and my architect talked me into hardwood floors in kitchen. I was aghast! But he kept assuring me that the wood would be protected with the finished top coat. So I did it and it turned out beautiful! Yes I spilled plenty on the kitchen hardwood floors but everything cleaned up with no problem. The floors even survived a leak from a washer (my house at that time was very small with a washer/dryer built into the kitchen). I have moved two more times since that renovation and have always kept hardwood floors in the kitchen since then.

This was helpful..My bathroom is the size of a closet with a window, I want to paint it matte black..The house was built in 1974 with a black and white narrow line tiles on the wall..The bathtub walls are enclosed in white..The wall space could be fully covered with less than a cup of paint..You've motivated me to do it.. Hi Julie ! Choosing paint last? Nope didn’t do that! I did what you said chose a neutral furnished from there and have changed wall paint colors in each room over time or wallpapered. I am thinking of interior paint work now and I am more certain of my color scheme to go with upholstery and wood and overall vibe. I am tending toward neutral greens instead of yellowish beiges. Did not know about that fifth wall. It was always white. Not anymore. Problem is when you paint your ceilings you high light those pot lights or light fixtures that have always been white to melt into the ceiling 🙁. Not buying new new light fixtures though. Thank you Julie! Great info here! 🥰❤️

@@judywood4530 look at design magazines to see what they do with the pot lights and colored ceilings. Maybe they paint those too! 🤔. I love your designs even though I'm not a maximalist. I am surprised that your on screen aesthetic; the walls, couch & plant don't look to me to be an example of your great tastes.

I chose my paint color first because I wanted the walls to be the basis for everything as a bold, very deep, slightly blue leaning green! But I hadn’t chosen any other items at that point

I am also not a fan of matchy, matchy, and I also like mixing antiques and modern, different wood tones, different fabrics design.. My design style is more like a mixed bag of anything I like and more of an eclectic style of decorating. I have hardwood in my kitchen, my living room has carpet, and my dining area has 18 x 18 tiles. I have a collection of Asian/Oriental small items and Buddhas that in my eyes blend perfectly well with my other things. Thanks for this video that affirms my non-sense style of decorating is acceptable.

I love accent walls. I like colors, but I get (more) depressed when my living space is too dark, and a lot of the colors I like tend be dark. So I love a lot of bright white… and an accent wall. Though I fully agree that textured feature walls are great

When it comes to design I think a challenge (rule I seem to break) is mixing and matching styles mcm and traditional furniture, with cultural pieces and artwork as well. This mixing also happens a lot when you have a partner with different tastes and the slight pressure to want modern conveniences and style in a 1950s house. Sometimes I just like all the styles but all at once can seriously clash, how can you mix stylishly?
