Hidden Energy is actually a cool ass mechanic. Energy sensing and suppression has always been a thing the games never really adapted so it's neat that they found a clever way to do it here.

It kind of is adapted to a degree, but it's not as much a focus as it was in 2 with the dedicated mechanics to it. Even in BT3; Androids are the hardest to lock onto, those with scouters can almost always find the opponent the fastest but when badly damaged have a harder time finding them, and those that can sense ki are kind of just the standard.

Here's another thing, in BT2 you can actually lead your beam attacks in vertical and horizontal directions. In BT2 you can do those chargeable power attacks referenced in your Kachin segment can be aimed in 8 directions. BT3 reduced them to 4 directions (likely to make blocking easier) Also, probably already known, but doing combos in BT2 makes your chargeable super attacks charge up to about twice as fast. I loved this system as it gave an advantage to people that went in for melee instead of those who spam attacks from range.

  • @_jagger1407

    @_jagger1407

    9 ай бұрын

The last thing you talked about is indeed known. We've named it melee momentum, you can gauge how much you have because the charge bar flashes faster the more melee momentum you have. It's an important mechanic because it makes chaining combo strings with cancels possible. You can cancel any chargable melee attack in BT2, and if you're on Peak Momentum, your cancel will be fast enough to start another rush string without breaking the hit counter, the time window for this is character dependant tho, and some chars are too slow for this.

I imagine that Roshi being referred to as "Turtle Hermit" is due to the fact that in Japanese the only characters that refer to him as "Muten Roshi" are Martial artists who respect him since Muten Roshi is his martial arts title (not his name Roshi translates to Master) meanwhile all non Martial arts characters and characters that just don't respect him refer to him as Kame Sen'nin, it makes sense for Cell but not really for the World tournament announcer

Hidden Energy had a fair bit of utility in Tenkaichi 2 when it was considerably easier to knock someone out of their sight on you mid-combat, generally smacking them into the ground at low health, and not just when hitting an enemy with an Ultimate beam or something. Of course, characters with Scouters can and WILL detect Gohan and Yajirobe even behind structures if I recall once the opponents use their search ability; They can even be detected off their Ki eventually by Ki sensing characters... At least I think they can, with enough Ki bars or something. Been ages since I played or even had BT2, sadly.

  • @DBZscrub

Due to the specificness of the circumstances needed to make the move slightly beneficial it's pretty unusable sadly e.g. you'd want to already have very low ki, have a blast stock spare, be able to escape the opponent and not be seen when hiding and then because you have no ki you'd have to charge it without drawing attention. But a neat implementation by the developers.

  • @KopperNeoman

There's a specific amount of Ki beyond which characters can't suppress their energy. You can charge up to that point, break line-of-sight, and timer scam the AI. If Tenkaichi 3 had the mechanic, it would work online too.

It's just a little confusing because Gohan's potential was also unlocked (moderately) in the namek saga which could also be dubbed as "hidden energy" though I guess potential is a better way of putting it. So I can understand why players would assume it would be more beneficial. It is a genius reference tho.

This mechanic of perfect charging is present in other games too like Smash Bros for special moves, and some sports videogames where you hold a button to fill a gauge but when you reach 100% if you keep holding the gauge will lose some of its charge and stagnate at 80%. The logic is that the character gets tired from holding the full charge for too long

My favorite detail about the spirit bomb is that if you DO use "Share your energy with me" you can actually see the spirit bomb floating in the sky waiting to be used. And it does in fact get larger with every charge. Also, the Supreme Kai using Kachin thing is not unique to BT3, He could launch several different shapes of kachin projectiles in Budokai 3 as well. Gameplay mechanics wise though, my favorite thing in BT3, specifically in terms of making the fights more cinematic, is the added "double dash" trick. Everybody knows that if you press L2+x you dash quickly toward the enemy with a ki aura, but by pressing X again mid-flight, you will actually dash off to the side and come around behind them, which you can use to dodge beam attacks, or just be extra flashy with your attacks (which looks extra cool because the camera locks and you actually get to watch yourself fly around behind from a spectator pov until you actually end behind them and go back to the normal "behind yourself" viewpoint.)

In regards to the master roshi turtle hermit thing its a nod to how he is called Kame-Senin which roughly translates to Turtle Hermit, and that's the title most characters use towards him in the Japanese version. Muten Roshi is a title that means something like "Invincible Old Master," basically Akira Toriyama combining fancy kanji to get across the idea that he's a mystical, prestigiuous figure in martial arts. Muten Roshi is his more formal title, while Kame Senin appears to be his regular identifier.

What's funny about the super armor and "SSJ3 tier power" characters is that there are some characters who can break thru it despite being weaker than others that can't do it. SSJ2 Teen Gohan was shown to not have the armor break property but SSJ saiyan armor Trunks can break thru. Found that out years ago when I was playing the Broly story mission and was confused on how Trunks was beating me up while nobody else could budge me.

About the chargeable kamehameha tip, I had noticed it years ago, and there is also another way to tell when you're ready to release the perfectly charged version instead of the fully charged one. That's when the circles gathering around the ball of the kamehameha reach the point when they just touch the main ball of the charging.

About the hidden kamehameha mechanic, you can see at the bottom left « BOOST! » when you release the button just before the automatic release, so it was always making sense to me that it was more powerful than just pressing it to the automatic release. But i never paid attention to the sound the kamehameha makes to warn you, i was just trying to feel in me when i had to release it, that’s very cool thanks a lot

I knew about the Beam Charge Noise, though I was mostly unaware of it causing more damage. I just thought it to be some sort of noise to encourage you not to charge it all the way. A sound to give it some OOMPH. Part of me also thought it was just a bug and it was meant to be placed right before you fired it. So, I just began to instinctively try to match it. For the sake of being cool.

Here's one interesting exploit in Tenkaichi 2. Self damaging attacks such as Neo tri beam register damage as blocked damage. Pairing a character with Perfect guard Z-item reduces the damage to 1. I think this worked especially well with Tien and Majin Vegeta in conjunction with halo item so you could spam their ultimate attacks for half the ki and at practically no cost.

On the kamehameha it looks like a modern mechanic kinda where the circle around the kamehameha is supposed to be released as it hits. You can also kinda see it on Piccolo's SBC as well. It's pretty neat that something like that has been around since ps2 era.

11:28 I find it funny you immediately charge up a melee attack, and then specifically overcharge that too. Did you know if you release the melee attack at the right time you will actually do a short range teleport jump to close some distance if you aren't quite close enough to land the attack? I think the teleport can also be used to dodge.

iirc that's not so much a hidden mechanic, and is more likely lesser known because people don't bother with the training modes, where they make you practice this. Xenoverse has that same mechanic, but does force the player to practice it if they want to progress with certain trainers.

Not sure if this counts, but I noticed that King Cold has a slightly different colour scheme in Tenkaichi 3 compared to the anime. In the anime he has a dark green biogem and blue armor, in the game he has a blue biogem and black armor. His Budokai 1 model actually does match the anime colours much better. Also, in his battle-damaged costume, it's shown he does not appear to have bio-armor covering the top of his abs, like both of his sons do.

5:40 SO fun fact is Vegeta's buu saga outfit (1994 first manga appearance ) is ACTUALLY from his appearance in Bardock father of goku special (he wore it training as a kid) which aired in 1990. the Cell saga started in 1992 (manga) meaning his "buu saga" fit predates even the bulma designed sayian armour look he had going into the time chamber by a long shot. Thus it would mean that particular look would be Vegeta's casual training outfit which even DBS BROLY AND SUPER HERO have him wearing when training. this is more likely as in the west we saw all of the specials and movies out of order so we wouldnt know that his buu saga look actually predates his cell saga look but the developers Dimps would have seen the designs in chronological order so its likely a mini reference in itself

The "hidden" Mechanic for kamehameha/super ki blasts was super obvious to me as a child since the game has this mechanic where you boots your special attack inputing what they told you (Ex: up + square), so it simply made sense to me that inputing 'y' (On the play was triangle) was the way to boost it for the ki blasts and the audio made it natural for me to know when to do it lol

I've made mods & it's kinda crazy how, depending on the game, you can work a "long" time to add/change stuff & wonder "is it worth my time to do something if most people won't notice?
