117 - Timber Frame Shed | Adding a Base & Installing a Ramp | Part 14

Ойын-сауық

In this video I continue with the timber frame shed project, the compact tractor part. I add a base of 7/8" clear stone and a cedar wooden ramp. I use my Kubota compact tractor to move the clear stone and ramp into the tractor shed portion of the timber frame shed. In addition, at the end of the video I provide a timesaver tip to help assist anyone who may plan to build a wooden ramp at some point.

Spending time outdoors doing projects with various machines and tools - anything from cutting trees, firewood, clearing brush, milling wood, plowing snow, reviewing, repairing & fabricating equipment. Doing landscaping and maintenance on my forested property using my Kubota tractor.
And its not all work!! Gotta take time to play - after turning my pond into a skating rink, and a whole bunch more of outdoor activities.

Good morning Paul ☕️, we also put clear gravel in our pole barn with the idea that we may pour concrete in the future. Excellent tip about building the ramp stringers. I will use your method. I love it when I learn something. Great video! Thanks for sharing, have a great week, Ben 👍

Good morning Ben. The concrete slab could be poured now in the cold weather but I am only somewhat familiar with how it has to be done. Instead of having some experts do it now I rather do it myself when it warms up in 2024. Very happy that you found the tip helpful. Have a great day!

Hello there Paul!! Nice job laying in the crushed rock. That'll make a good base and if you put concrete in next year, this will be well compacted and ready for it!! Your shed is very nice Paul. You have done an excellent job. Take 'er easy!!

Good morning and thank you Mike. There is already the driveway 12 inch base under the 7 inch stone that I just put. I plan to scrape out 4 inches in the springtime then pour concrete over top. Have a great week!

Good morning Sir and thank you. We had trouble with the cameras auto-focus on this one. I added some extra lighting but it wasn't enough. We learned a few things from filming this one. Have a great day Sir!

Morning Paul! Of course with your awesome planning that ramp would be perfectly level first try on camera hehe! Any chance the bottom of those walls might rot some day because of the "ground contact" with the rocks abd concrete? Also if you are not too far, but I think you are closer to the GTA, we'd love to have you and your family come pick a Xmas Tree from our little farm! We are in Eastern Ontario. Cheers, Alex

Good morning Alex. I was actually surprised a little that it was 100% level and that was the very first try. I am happy to have caught it on camera. I really don't expect the wall boards to rot. There is a very small air gap at the bottom between the board and ground level thus the boards don't actually touch the ground. Prior to when I pour the concrete pad I will put a thin barrier between the walls and stone/concrete. Thus the stones for now are only touching to seal off the gap to keep mice out until I get the cement pad in. That sounds like an exciting thing to do to come and pick a Xmas Tree. You'll have to let me know when the trees are ready for picking. I am just outside Perth. I love the great questions you always have. Enjoy the day and I look forward to your next video.

Looking good Paul. Your camera person does a nice job. Why do you prefer nails over screws?

  • @JelenOutDoors

Thanks Brian. We did have some issues with the auto-focus on this video and that taught us a few things. I like nails better for their shear strength, cost and the way they handle in extreme weather conditions. Too often when using screws the heads get counter-sunk leaving divots for water to saturate into the wood. Nails are better for re-use opposed to screws that usually strip out and can't really be straightened if bent. To me it's more fun to pound in a nail than torque in a screw. Also, I think that shear strength is more important than tensile strength. Have a great day!
