The biggest brain play Oxford could have done is add a false pin that isn't used by the original key, but triggers the alarm if it's turned.

@@Dylan-xc8yz If an average lawnmower at a safe distance is 90dBZ loud (dBA is difficult to work with but is fairly close to dBZ), it would have a power gain that's an order of magnitude higher (1x10^9 -> 1x10^10). However, the perceived loudness would only be ~2-3x higher. Now, I'm not sure how they've measured the sound levels, but if 100dBZ was measured 10cm away from the source, at a distance of 50cm, the sound level would only be ~86dBZ (check out this calculator: hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/Acoustic/isprob2.html). Even if the actual exposure was 100dBZ, hearing that sound for a minute will almost certainly cause no hearing damage, considering that some concerts have sound levels of up to 110dBZ.

  • @Dylan-xc8yz

@@Permille that may be an old metric. Most lawnmowers I've used have been 70-80dBA. "Long or repeated exposure to sounds at 85dBA or above may cause hearing damage" That's from a website summary on a quick search for "dBA hearing damage". The specific level for hearing damage doesn't interest me here. My point was you said "100 dBA isn't that loud", but it can and likely will cause hearing damage (even if temporary) if you are close enough.

When i started, about a year ago, picking locks for fun, a locksmith told me, "A set of picks is *not* burglar tools. A crackhead and a brick, >that's< burglar tools". Lock picking is a specialized skill set. Burglars, and other thieves, don't have the time. They just smash and grab. And yet, this does not diminish the skills shown here, in the least. Thank you for another fine video, sir.

I don't know if things have changed in 3 years but. Now it's very organised gangs that's the seller bike first to order and then steal it using angle grinders, now they're using plasma cutters.. The thing is crucially though they generally don't pick locks. The lock booking lawyer is impressive but there are locks that are very hard to pick, they're definitely out there particularly the abloy brand for one.

I own this lock. I used it on my bike before I got into a wreck. The first thing that made me go "damn, this thing sucks" is when he first inserted the key to show that it works. The key they gave me with my lock was so shitty, that it would often take upwards of 30 seconds to get it to unlock WITH the key. The other thing that made me think bad things was that his lock didnt randomly start making noise when it was just laying there still. The alarm on mine would often set off while there was nothing touching it or the bike. I would set it, walk away, and after I was about 20 feet away, the incredibly loud alarm would go off. Combine that with the shitty key, and it often meant that I would set it in the non-alarm side just so it wouldn't scream for no reason. I'm sure my neighbors loved that one.

I'd be interested to see you perform this pick in a more simulated environment. Regardless of specialised tools, you also had a stable surface for the lock to rest on, and most noteably a stable surface for your hands to rest on while you manipulated the tool. With the lock at sub-knee height where it's likely going to be hanging from a motorbike disc brake, with you crouched down beside it, there's so much more potential for errant movement and vibrations to set off the alarm...

Doubtful. Waterproofing that probably isn't that hard (and it claims "water" and "frost" proof) and besides, might be tricky to just carry around a bucket of water to dunk locks. If we figure most thieves are using "brute force" then this seems look a good deterrent.

I think the prospect of having a disc-detainer lock picked on the street, let alone one that has 8 discs, is alarmed, and requires a customised tool, is vanishingly small. so close to zero as for the distinction to be irrelevant.

I think one way to "defeat" lockpickers with alarm padlocks is to have some kind of sensor built into the keyway or locking mechanism itself and when it detects lockpicking it sounds the alarm as part of suite of sensors within the lock body.

No, you've got it all wrong. You have to understand LPL's language. When a lock is "good" most people would come out and simply say "yeah, this is good." When LPL comes across a "good" lock and says, " as you saw, picking this wasn't appreciably harder than picking the non-alarm version; it just requires a bit more care. The main defense, in my opinion, is the fact that this requires such a specialized tool and specialized skills." that is legalese for "this lock is good, but the alarm doesn't make it any harder to pick." It's practically an endorsement for either the alarm version or the non-alarm version of the lock. He's just careful about what he says so nothing comes back to bite him.

The question is what are you trying to defend against. This lock is pickable with a specialized tool, are you defending against the .001% of people that have this modified tool in a carry bag and are thieves? Or are you defending against something else. Thieves who will just bypass the lock and cut the chain. The specialized vs unspecialized threat. Most thieves or security experts won't bother picking. They'll try to go around the lock if possible. The difference between then now is with the alarm you know something is wrong. Without you don't know till later. Which is useful

Well... it seems like you already have all of the specialized tools and skills or, at least, have the capacity to create the specialized tools and learn the skills you´ll need to defeat most locks. I recently discovered your channel and didn´t take it seriously at first because the ease with which you seem to able to pick or otherwise thwart most locks. I´ve decided to try my hand at lock picking because you make it seem extremely accessible. Any other channels or literature you could recommend would be great because now I'm into it.

what a true disk detainer alarm lock should do is when a single disk is rotated rather then all of the disks at one time, the alarm will go off, unfortunately I don't know of any lock made that dose this but I think a lock maker should try to pull it off. As a locksmith in training, I think that locks like the Abloy Protec2, and the abus plus core locks should carry these features and should be a little more affordable. The locksmith that is training me has found a way to make a regular Schlage 5 or 6 pin lock affordable and very pick resistant, we have found that if we double up on the springs and add spools, serrated and custom made pins we get a ton of pick resistance. And if customers want to pay a little extra we can counter mill them or do other tactics to make picking very difficult. A lot of key blanks are made in Mexico. The locksmith that is training me was born in mexico, but is a US citizen, so when he vists his family in mexico he can get key blanks for cheap down there then he takes them back to the US when he returns and can charge a little less for cutting keys.

This lock requires a custom home made tool and a really experienced locksmith. That would be enough to keep most thieves away. When you have this lock on a motorcycle that is parked in a line with other motorcycles that all have locks that can easily be picked with a jiggler key, that reduces the probability of this motorcycle being stolen down to nearly 0%!

@@Imthefake I'd prefer to remove that arrow, so that expert silent attackers (i.e. pickers) may be less sure of what they are facing. Pickers of lesser skill won't know what they are doing and will trigger the alarm anyway. Brute force attackers will trigger the alarm anyway, what do they know of lock alarms? We need tests of our hypotheses, since psychology is not so predictable. I'd subscribe to a "What will a thief do" set-up channel. Although, some will not, because they are sure they know-it-all-already. (No dig at anyone on this channel.)

  • @AtlasJotun

    @AtlasJotun

@@davidcovington901 Then you'd need to remove the band on the shackle as well, since it's position left or right would indicate alarm status. At that point, the owner wouldn't know if it were armed either until it beeped (gee that wouldn't be annoying). Now, since that band likely houses a ferro-magnetic bead or something similar, you need a new way to house it discreetly, thereby requiring a re-design. The cost of that $110 lock just went way up, and it's marketability just went down in equal measure. If a thief is that familiar with your model of lock, then your stuff is gone regardless. Imthefake was correct. And as always, a lock only stops an honest man.

I think a good additional security feature would be a Bluetooth connection and a special app. When the alarm is armed from the app, any sudden movement or attempt to turn the lock would activate the alarm. To open it you'd first have to disarm it from the app and then open the lock. Battery usage is a factor in this, but luckily low power Bluetooth exists.
