111. Dirt Cheap ABANDONED Project YACHT - Is She Worth It? [Full Tour] Learning the Lines

Head to squarespace.com/learningthelines to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code "learningthelines.”
This Cheoy Lee 43 was abandoned behind a dock with a few feet of rainwater inside when the current owner bought her for dirt cheap. Since then he's rebuilt the big diesel engine, stripped off the teak decks, and refinished some wood, but there's still about 99% of the project left. If you're willing to rebuild a boat from the hull up this project might be for you, but if not I'd run away.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.
Please leave a like and comment if you've enjoyed the video, and subscribe if you haven't already.

Word of advice, if the deck feels a bit soft its best not to jump up and down on it as this often leads to the formation of a new hatch and quite bad bruising.

Nick Tombs Lol, I was thinking that too, it’s obviously soft, there’s no need to push your luck jumping on it. Jump on the solid ones to show how solid they are, not on the rotten ones to show how rotten.

Other than re-coring the deck, it is not that bad assuming it is structurally sound otherwise. Put in some nice insulation to make it more livable. If you went wit a work boat finish on the interior with a lot of painted surfaces, vinyl planking and laminates instead of all that varnished wood, it wouldn't take too long or cost too much and be a lot brighter. It also gives you a blank page for making the interior to suit your lifestyle.

Lmao! Yup...$500 for scrap metal weight! Wish owners understood this concept! At some point a boat is monetarily bankrupt of value typically because it was allowed to cruise right into a complete state of rot and disrepair and owners still expect to get 80% of the $ they paid. So the boat doesn't sell and rots away to become waste. Actually many people do this with lots of things! Particularly in America!

Remove all equipment required to go to sea and enjoy the novelty of a beautiful design. Sadly, as others have pointed out, this beauty has probably seen its last excursion. Very sad to see so many beautiful works of art fall into disrepair. If it was available for free, it may not be worth the transport fees. Thank you for the tour.

There's a reason ABYS requires qualifications and continuing courses to be NAMS or SAMS certified as a boat surveyor. I'm sure that MOST surveyors would have stepped on board, opened a couple of hatches and asked you 'so...what are they offering you to tow it out and scuttle it as a new reef foundation?' Seriously...pull the brite-work, yank that mast, buy a 1-inch bit for your drill, charge your 80 tanks, and make a 'diving-day' of it...because THIS WILL NEVER BE SEAWORTHY AGAIN!!!

Like you say... if someone wants to put 5 -10 years of their spare time , and has alot of cash they want to throw at it now (and probably for the rest of the boats life); if they have a free place to work on it, free helpers- free stuff etc ect etc. Well, if you could get the boat for almost free and move it to your free location for free... I think you might have chance at making a boat someone would want to sail! Of course, after all that, and sailing it for a few years, it will be a 50 year old boat and you might have to, lol, give it away for FREE to get rid of it!

Love your vids. If I could try living on a boat I think it would be great fun. Small spaces have never bothered me but I could care less about. All the nomenclature. Resurrecting old vessels seems very environmentally sensible though and I am sure some grasp of the pieces and parts make sense. Good luck with your search After working on old cars I think the question is can you work on what’s needed here efficiently and do you enjoy it. Budgets in projects tend to go out the window quickly unless you are able to stick to a plan. Be prep’d to duck and run when something terrible turns up. Looks like a comfy place for folks in a budget I love these smaller vessels and the access to the sport they give us but this project would take a lot of skills and time the might never come together in a usable boat.

I look at these videos as stress relief and mental pause. Zero experience with boats. But this seems like the current owner realized the true extent of the damage after doing little work. Now is looking to cut his/her/it hope turned disappointment and turn it over to someone that won't be put off by complete gut and rebuild. Essentially there might be a good mould to build off of once everything is removed gently to a heap.

Love the boat tours guys. I suggest you focus more in the $30-60k price range where peeps can actually afford a boat (28-42') that's the price of a new car. SV Poldhu - This one is pretty bad and would probably end up quite expensive all in. I don’t think they should focus on any specific price range, for every person looking for a cheap boat someone else is looking for an expensive boat and then there’s people like me who have no plans to buy a boat so I watch just to see the variety and I like seeing boats in all price ranges. I think variety is their best bet to get as many views as they can, that’s where they make their money, not actually selling boats.

I jumped ahead to make a couple of positive comments. 1. Anyone that thinks that Randi is anything short of beautiful is BLIND! Jordan, you are a blessed man! Beauty, intelligence, wit and willing to get her hands in to the project...nice. 2. You two are doing a great job. I also follow Mads( sp ) Solianis the Wynns and others. You have the talent, personality, desire and ability to do this. I will say that you do need a bigger boat. Nice job on the electric power on Freebie...very nice. I would personally get a long shaft OB on a retractable mount for her stern... but I am a redundancy fanatic! Keep up the good work you two. Rick.

Failure makes success a little sweeter. We appreciate victory more when we've tasted defeat. Life wouldn't be fun if things always worked out. Know that your failure is just part of the game we're all playing. We expend a lot of energy running from failure. Try embracing it. Find the opportunity in the adversity. If there's a recipe for success, failure might be its primary ingredient.

Soft Decks doesn't exactly mean that it's rotted. You had mentioned that he removed the teak therefore taking away all of the structural integrity of the deck I have built a lot of boats in my 52 years. There's a reason that teak wood was on that deck. The reason being structural structural structural and at the same time aesthetically pleasing to the eye. So instead of advising someone to rip the whole deck off you should strip it down to bare material and doing a moisture test on it then recap it with a strong stable material such as teak wood. Chances are the subdeck that you were actually walking on is nothing more than woven roving fiberglass. You mentioned,There wouldn't have been thousands of holes in that deck. First of all you don't nail teak down ,it is put down with an adhesive compound.

... a good project for a finishing carpenter, someone with good woodworking skills would be able to knock off the interior quite swiftly .... or for someone that wants to do the interior while they move from exotic location to exotic location .... you would want a steamer (bending wood), and a generator for your hand tools .... someone is going to love this project ..... would want to fix the deck before heading out, as well as one of the heads ..... good candidate for a hybrid, electric engine and gen set below the pilothouse and Battery banks below cabin sole ..... have fun be safe, save our oceans .....

hmmm...black mold throughout, wood forms in the hull itself (hate to call them bulkheads and stringers, at this point...maybe merely 'formerly known as...'), spongier than a pool float...and you deem this 'a good project for a finishing carpenter'? ROFL... You don't get it...those that think like you do, end up turning something like this into a 'do it yourself' project, do it half-butt, get state numbers for it (because they can't get it to pass survey), and then end up off Cape Hatteras or Key West calling for Mayday...ship sinking...because they thought that with enough caulk, they could turn LANDFILL into a SEAWORTHY VESSEL AGAIN!
