110221 MAN EJECTED THROUGH ROOF IN FOUR CAR CRASH FOUND ALIVE 3 HOURS LATER

Just after 7pm, a four-vehicle crash was reported on FM 1314 south of SH 242 in front of the Thunder Gun Range. First units on the scene started calling for additional ambulances and rescue equipment. The driver of one of the vehicles was not on the scene. None of the witnesses say he left the scene. The sunroof of his jeep was broken out and pieces were found several hundred feet down the road. Caney Creek and Porter Firefighters started searching the woods in knee-deep water with no luck. DPS Troopers were convinced the 61-year-old male did not flee on foot. Texas Department of Criminal Justice was contacted for Bloodhounds. DPS also requested their helicopter. A crew was called into a man it and they responded. For over an hour they flew over the area using infrared sensors and spotlights with no luck. Now, 3-h0urs into the search the DPS Sergeant on the scene had just put the radio in his hand to release the helicopter from the scene and allow the fire department to continue searching with a drone. It was then the helicopter crew said they spotted the victim some 200-yards into the woods lying alongside the water. Troopers went in to locate him thinking the crash was now a fatality. However, the next call was for them to send EMS in and the victim was alive. The TDCJ Dogs were canceled. The driver of the Jeep was transported to Memorial Hermann in The Woodlands. Witnesses said the driver of the Jeep was northbound on FM 1314 when he crossed the center line sideswiping a southbound Kia Sol causing it to flip into the ditch. The female driver was transported in stable condition to Methodist Hospital in The Woodlands. The Jeep then went between a Ford Edge and a Toyota Forerunner. As it hit this vehicle it went airborne and landed on top of the Toyota. The female driver was trapped in the Toyota with internal injuries and leg fractures. Caney Creek and Porter firefighters worked to free her. An infant was in a car seat in the back seat. The infant did not even have a scratch being in the baby seat. Firefighters were able to get the infant out of the mangled mess. It was close to 20-minutes to cut the female driver out of the Toyota. The female driver of the Ford edge which was also southbound was transported in stable condition. The driver of the Jeep could not be found. Inside his vehicle were no signs that he had exited the vehicle on his own as all doors were jammed shut. But with the roof, open Troopers figured he had been ejected. He was transported to Memorial Hermann in The Woodlands in stable condition. DPS is still trying to determine why he crossed into oncoming traffic, however, another witness says they believe he hit the curb on the side of the road and overcorrected.
EDITORS NOTE: IF IT WASN'T FOR THE PERSISTENCE OF THE EAST COUNTY DPS TROOPERS AND SERGEANT THIS DRIVER OF THE JEEP MAY HAVE DIED IN THE WOODS.

Very tragic accident. Glad everyone survived. This included an elderly man who was ejected thru the sun roof & an infant who survived in a car seat. As an over the road truck driver going cross country for over 27 years, I have seen some pretty tragic accidents in my time. Putting the infant in the car seat & ejection together, I instantly remembered an accident that happened in front of me a few years ago. It happened in St. Louis MO. at the I-44 & I-55 split. A lady in a Jeep came onto I-44 from I-55 a few cars in front of me. A guy in a pickup truck in front of her had been moving household furniture & didn't properly secure the load. A sofa fell out of the back of the pickup truck & started bouncing down the I-44 right in front of the lady in the Jeep. I put the flashers on & brought the semi to a safe stop in the middle lane as the accident in front of me starts getting started. The lady in the Jeep swerved to avoid the sofa & flipped the Jeep on it's roof sliding down the highway upside down. A couple of other cars banged off of each other trying to avoid the sofa & upside down sliding Jeep. When the dust cleared. The Jeep lay upside down right in front of me in the center lane with the 3 other banged up cars & pick up truck on the right shoulder. I checked on the lady in the Jeep & she was hysterical. She was crying & screaming & was pinned in the Jeep with her legs crushed under the dashboard which was crushed down on top of her lap. I did the best I could to calm her down & got her attention enough to shut the engine off as it was still running & smoking. She also had lacerations to her head, & I was trying to keep pressure on them with a shirt that I had found in the back of her Jeep. There was also a nurse who stopped to help & she took over the triage. The lady was hysterical crying out about her baby. We looked around & nobody could see a baby anywhere. Fire & police show up & while attending the lady & cutting her car away to extricate her, others kept looking for a baby that the lady was so frantic about. Finally about 30 minutes later after she was freed from the the Jeep & sedated in the ambulance. I was sitting in my truck, filling out a witness statement, A truck driver going the opposite direction on I-44 starts blaring his airhorn, He stops his truck & jumps out & runs to the median, bends down, & picks up a baby strapped in a car seat from the center median wall, & hands the baby over the wall to a State Trooper. The baby in the car seat had been ejected from the Jeep when it flipped over & nobody including me seen it. There were tire marks on the car seat. The baby had some scratches but was crying & other wise fine & they right away brought it into the ambulance to be with the mother.. God works miracles in so many ways.

It is amazing how far you can be thrown from a vehicle. I have heard several stories from police and EMS regarding such accidents. My brother (police) worked an accident with three teens whose vehicle flew off the freeway and into a field. They were going really fast. The car flipped and ejected them and all were deceased near the vehicle. The police found out the next morning a family had a missing son and they had found out he was with those kids. The police went back out and searched the woods. The kid was in the woods hundreds of yards from the car. I mean, really far away. He had been sling shotted out the back window and thrown far into the woods. He was dead. Such a sad case. Slow down, people. It isn’t worth it.

All I can guess by looking at the damage is the Jeep somehow managed to initially come down with the most force right in front of the A pillar on the Toyota' engine bay with momentum then forcing it into and over the roof. The crash bar on the front of the engine bay still appeared really straight. Such a freak accident, I'm so glad everyone was able to be rescued.

With nothing to dissipate the energy everything appears to have just blown out and away from the point of impact. A-pillars and roof held up well enough to offer adequate protection. I think you're probably in pretty good shape driving a 4Runner considering the how unlikely an event like this is.

The article I read, said the man in the jeep (61 years old) hit a curb and over-corrected.

Motorists in general, regardless of which country you live in, drive far too fast. Today, there are far more automobiles on the road than there were a few decades ago. These vehicles are faster than ever, and there are more driver distractions now, including iphones. It is the perfect storm for allowing needless accidents to take place. Please drive safely and treat other drivers respectfully. You can save a lot of lives that way.

Affordable family sedans with sport modes and 300+ horsepower or for a bit more money you can get attainable rocket ships like the Dodge Charger Scat pack. A driver almost feels obligated to drive fast with how cars looks, drive, and how they are advertised. In all seriousness, there is no excuse to drive like an idiot. At least some of the luxury car manufactures have taste and advertise as effortless power vs 1/4 mile hotrods.

She'd hit a oak tree, obviously fell asleep at the wheel as there were no skid marks. She was killed instantly. When we got her to the embalming room, her left foot was severed and she had a huge cut on her left breast. It's amazing how she had not one other cut or laceration on any other part of her body. What a shame to die so young.

Physics is an awesome power. First, the crash happened at exactly the right speed and angle to throw the driver out of the sunroof rather than smashing him into the inside and breaking his neck. Second, the distance he travelled meant that he must have landed hard but apparently he landed on soft ground saving him again. But what is truly amazing and quite unbelievable is that he travelled all that way though the woods without ever hitting a tree. I wish there was a map of his route since he must have flown in a straight line passing within millimeters of multiple trees yet never coming in contact with any of them.

Agree. Usually when people get ejected something slows them down but he didn't even have a sun roof to fly through. There was no roof. That means he probably was not Unconscious flying 2 football fields away. How high did he go? That's a lot of time to think about things as your flying through the air. I'm not trying to be funny. But if you think about all the details it's pretty crazy.
