    You should include wizards casting spells with a verbal component in your drawing rules, I do. A spell caster underwater, and unable to breathe water, that casts a spell with a verbal component loses any held breath and begins to drown.

    Enjoyed the drowning mechanic. It makes for more realism. Though, it may slow things down a bit, I still think it's worth it. Good vid Luke!

    thought that this would be important information to share, given the somewhat fish-related nature of this video. 35% of all ocean microplastics come from clothing/textiles, mostly polyester, but also acrylic and nylon as well. This is largely due to clothes made of these materials being washed, which causes these clothes to quickly erode, with the microplastic fibers entering the water system, and eventually, the sea, where they often end up consumed by fish. These microplastics can in turn end up inside us when we eat these fish. Ocean Hero is a great search engine that we can use to help clean up larger plastics before they disintegrate into microplastics.

    Underwater combat also causes creatures that dont have a swimming speed attempting a melee attack against creatures with a swimming speed to do so at disadvantage unless they use specific weapons. A ranged weapon attack is impossible at long range, but normal range is at disadvantage unless the characters are using certain weapons. Creatures fully submerged in water have resistance to fire damage. This is all in chapter 9 of the phb. I forget the page number. But it does mean that the Koa Toa are a bit more survivable in the water. Hope that helps.

    The way i play drowning rules is characters can hold their breath for a number of rounds equal to twice their constitution score. But using more than one action in a turn "spends" rounds of holding your breath. Taking high amounts of damage also costs you rounds. Overall it just makes it more realistic.

    Ngl, based on the title I was hoping for a variety of underwater tactics to be used by different underwater races/monsters. Was a little bummed when it turned out being exclusively about kuo-toa. And, yeah, some of these can be transferable but I feel like you should change the title to me closely reflect the content

    I used the sahajan blademaster I guess my four children's characters. One has been doing water-based adventures long enough they've gotten a hold of a helm of underwater action, but the other one hadn't. The fight was hard enough at their level, my eye can definitely see how if the sahuagan used its double movement speed to run in, run out taking a single opportunity attack (as opposed to up to three attacks from a mid-level fighter), well that could be a great way to take a CR 5 monster and make it threatening part of a combat for a much higher level party

    My players once tracked lizard folk kidnappers back to their lair. After observing them use pollen of a giant magic lilly flower to allow the victims to breathe water, the players decided to set up camp on the lilly pad... they sadly perished and were found by the next group of adventurers mounted upon the fossil they were sacrificed to raise from the dead.

    If you want to fix nets in your games, simply classify them as "Martial Melee Weapons". The real oversight by the developers seems to be classifying nets as "Martial Ranged Weapons" instead of "Martial Melee Weapons". It is, after all, the ONLY "ranged weapon" that exclusively uses Strength, and it is the only "weapon" that doesn't deal any damage. It's actually written more like Adventuring Gear, though they likely folded it into the Weapons category to lock it behind a proficiency requirement for balance purposes. This is why its "Special" trait specifies that using a net is the only attack you can make in a turn; otherwise net spam would be rampant. *** Simply considering it a "Martial Melee Weapon" means that attacking a creature within 5 ft does not have disadvantage, AND it can also be thrown at a creature within up to 15 ft at disadvantage. That sounds infinitely better, and I'd imagine this is how it was designed to function before somebody in the pipeline misclassified it, as it's perfectly balanced this way. Literally every other weapon with the Thrown property can be used effectively in melee (without disadvantage). The only APPARENT exception being darts, a 1d4 simple ranged weapon that is unambiguously designed to be thrown, however, based on the Improvised Weapon rules, using a dart to stab someone within 5 ft is still a normal attack roll that deals full damage. So, a player could by Rules As Written slap someone within 5 ft with a net for 1d4 damage that it couldn't do otherwise, HOWEVER, considering its position as the sole outlier, it seems as though the intended interaction would be to use their full action to attempt to physically overpower and restrain the creature beside them with this item instead of going for a bunch of unarmed grapple checks. TLDR: Call nets "Martial Melee Weapons." It retains all the intended balance principles and makes them work properly.

    I disagree that escaping from a net is trivial since it uses up an action and like you said, multiple nets would pretty much be the end of the fight if enemies can keep throwing them on. After the character is restrained, additional nets no longer have disadvantage. Nets are the weapon of choice if you have numbers on your side.

    So let's say I have 14CON, then I'll be able to hold my breath for 30 rounds. That's a lot. But what if anything I did cost me oxygen? Any move, Action or Bonus Action, minus one oxygen. Taking damage reduces O2 as well, plus one more oxygen per 10 hit points taken. Now the risk of drowning is real (and I'll rule that a drowning pc rolls Death Saves at disadvantage).

    I don't use 'official' lore at all. My world build started a long time ago, and has it's own lore. Oddly enough, I have Kuo-Toa aiming to capture as much as possible as well! They occasionally use Drow poisons to enhance their nets as well as weighting and spikes. Not quite homebrew...ok yep homebrew. But I brew good beer too, so there! 8>D

  • @StupidButCunning

    @StupidButCunning

    The Tank usually stops the melee combatants from getting past. Squishier hostiles that attack from a distance are usually dealt with by the ranged characters such as bow users or other casters. Obviously control the narrative flow. If you down a character, and they get brought back up, don't immediately attack them again. Maybe change focus to the one that brought them back, or a PC that has a bit more health such as a tank in the idea that the tank is stopping the troops with nets from capturing their prey. Depending on circumstances, you can also use flavor of what's going on in the battle to justify switching targets before they've dropped a target. Remember that especially when dealing with Kuo-toa, they do NOT want to kill their targets during the battle. That's a last resort, so knowing that can help control the narrative flow.

  • @StupidButCunning

    @@jonathanschmitt5762 If it helps, it's important to remember that 5e isn't really designed around tanking or healing. Very few actual tanking mechanics exist, such as with the Ancestral Guardian Barbarian. Feats like Sentinel are also the exception to the rule. Similarly, healing is not designed to be done keeping your party members topped off. The healing does not scale as well as damage, and characters operate at the same efficiency no matter their health. Instead, the way action economy works means it's better to focus on damage to reduce the number of combatants or control spells to limit the impact enemies have on the encounter. I mention this all since I know many people initially approach D&D with the mindset of an MMO, where there are designated roles that remain fairly static. If you have homebrewed something with taunt mechanics as well as homebrewed healing to scale to such a point that it can exceed damage done rather than vice versa, then never mind, but the underlying design system behind 5e is less straight forward. Creatures behave in a manner corresponding to their Intelligence score and tactics described in their lore, making them much less predictable and allowing for countless different narrative results than the grindfest encountered in traditional RPGs.
