Thanks for a great video. You emptied my cup for sure. I might add IF you practice 10-15 minutes a day it helps to "Practice with a Purpose". Have a lesson plan for that time, as well as (hopefully) some knowledgeable instruction, or oversight occasionally by a knowledgeable teacher, lest you practice "bad form, bad movement," over and over day after day. Just my two cents. It is very hard to know if you form and movement is correct on your own. Loved your advice to keep the elbows up. True, especially when passing fist through front to back to front. Much easier with a parallel arm and belly of bag set correctly. I think of a cup of coffee resting mid point between my shoulder and arm...don't spill the coffee. Great video and insights! #KeepPunching!

I have my own way of hitting the speed bag: i basically "link" my hands and feet together, meaning if I hit it with my left hand, i tap on my left foot, right hand, right foot, same mechanics when throwing a punch. Also i put the hand thats not hitting the bag near my cheek, similar to how I would in a real fight. In the last 10 seconds of the timer, i jog in place while hitting the bag to increase intensity. I also incorporate head movement here and there. Or sometimes, I just shadowbox with the speedbag as my target. Its a great tool, it just takes creativity to use

You can easily apply this to learning instruments! I practice certain bass licks for 5 minutes a day and I'm getting better at it over night thinking about what I do wrong and how I can fix it. My fingers then usually move and shadow what I do on the fretboard. Thanks for the video! I do BJJ so I don't use the speed bag. But the theory behind it is still very interesting!

This is crazy. I never even knew there could be so that many ways of the speed bag. I'm really only familiar with the frame/punch(#8), maybe drumroll#3, didn't know that was even a real method), and the falling step(#9). I've probably seen the punch/block(#1) and thought it was the same as #8. I remember seeing one of my instructors do a combo on the speed bag that was cool. But I was still to novicy to try it. I was getting better at #8 for a little while. Was working on it and it definitely helped my other areas. Like the arm rotator for cardio(arm bike, idk what it's really called). That definitely helped, plus the speed bag, made everything better. But the gym I'm at now doesn't have a speed bag. Now I'm bumming cuz I cant work on one now.

Again, great video. Could you comment on bag height. What if the bag is a 30cm lower or higher? A 1.5m tall person and a 2m tall person training on the same bag height might help one and create bad form on the other. Conversely is it better to train on speed bags with different heights or consistently on a fixed height bag? I found wear on my shoulders at too low or high speed bags. Love to hear your thought. Thanks.

You explained the specific reasons behind the block punch drill... are there different particular reasons behind the other drills or are the reasons for them pretty much the same as the block punch one ? Thanks. 🙂👍

  • @RamseyDewey

Each of those patterns represents a different technique. The speed bag develops power by stimulating the fast twitch muscles from the elbow down to the hand. It’s the last extremity of the punch we’re training in massive numbers when we use the speedbag. Even if you never use any of the practical fighting applications of the patterns, if power development is all you get out of speed bag training then it’s well worth it. After watching Marcos Maidana work out, I made it a point to develop my power to the point that I could break a speed bag with each training session. After breaking 12 of them, it started getting expensive, so I stated focusing more on technique. But yeah, correct speedbag training will add that extra POP to your punches you didn’t even know you were missing.

Great videos man, i just now came across them, they're very helpful, i have a question i want to ask you thought i figured you can help me out somewhat, im 21 years old and ive boxed on and off since 17 and did well, ive recently made my way back into training and wanting to compete again to make a pro debut and see how things turn out but heres where my question comes in, i suffered a slight tear in my left shoulder after a hook landed wrong, since then my arm gets fatigued and my shoulder blade feels a little weaker sometimes when i throw my jab alot or when i throw hooks alot, surgery isnt an option rn dont have the money for it, and this is what im truly passionate about, my main punches are my 1 2 and im not a crazy output fighter more of a boxer puncher but as of the past couple years ive enjoyed watching glory kickboxing guys such as massaro glunder etc have drawn my attention, im jw what can i do to continue to make sure my shoulder isnt a problem and what would it be less stress on it if i decided to compete in other martial arts such as mma muay thai etc any feedback helps thanks

@@RamseyDewey drills to do on the speed bag, like some basic head movements or combinations to work or even timing etc... Even a video on how to use a head hunter bag would be awesome aswell! Anyway, keep up with the good content ! Thank you

Hey Ramsey, I'm a boxer and I've been watching you for a while, do you think that a speed bag like this would be useful to train in pure boxing with no mma elbows or back/side fist punches/blocks? If so how useful do you think it is? I know you did focuse on this in part in this video but if you could make a short video just talking about weather it's practical or not specifically in boxing then I'd be grateful, thanks.

Yep. I’m making a whole series of videos about the speed bag and double end bag. For boxing, besides the round elbow, there’s a practical use for all of these movements. And even if you never use those specific techniques, the speedbag is one of the most underrated developers of punching power when used correctly. If you haven’t already check out this old video of Marcos Maidana’s coach complaining about how Maidana keeps popping all the speedbag sin his gym because he hits so dang hard: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hISFtrd7cryaoM4.html

Did you ever notice that you have an arched back? You can look online for ways to fix it. There is a channel called athlean x which has videos about the topic, they are a really good channel btw.

Dear Ramsay, I finally have the chance to go to a boxing gym in my local area, I signed up for the next five weeks (before I have to move again) what do you recommend I do? (stamford boxing club CT) ALSO, as you said in the video, the speed bag was in a dark dusty corner covered in cob webs... :) (I have a background in taekwondo, if that makes any difference)
