#10MinuteTalk

Jimmy and Mark are joined by the cartridge man himself, Ryan Muckenhirn, to discuss one that Mark has been particularly curious about - the .375 Ruger. Getting much of it’s DNA from one of the oldest and most iconic dangerous game cartridges that’s still widely used today, the .375 H&H, this cartridge is a high-performing and heavy-hitting brute that’s perfectly at home in a small, handy rifle anywhere from Alaska to Africa. Check it out!

The .375 H&H (and other cartridges of the time) was long and tapered for a good reason. They were loaded with cordite, which was very temperature-sensitive. The long tapered case aided in easy extraction.

Ruger used to make magnum-length actions and 375HH rifles on M77 Mk2 era, they're massive Safari and Alaska guns. The 375 Ruger fits in the .30-06 length action of the updated M77 Hawkeye series. There's still on lot of Mk2 rifles available in the used market. Like all the Ruger No.1s floating about.

375 Ruger is definitely one of the top do it all cartridges ever!! I’ve been in love with it since it came out.. Sadly, my first Rifle I built using a 375 Ruger action on a HS Precision stock was stolen while I was over seas. Now I just finished my second build only its the Savage brush hunter barreled action on an Oryx chassis with a witt machine directional break!! The best part is Lehigh defense offers 185gr, 270gr. Barnes, Hornady, Nosler offer 235,250,260,270, 300, and 350gr options! Now some fun research will show you ballistically the lighter 375 Ruger loads shoot as flat and even flatter than many of what folks consider to be “long range” cartridges.

Was mentioned but a bit more could have been said of the off spring. The 300 RCM Ruger Conpact Magnum works well in shorter barrels and standard action. The 6.5 PRC designed for and works well with longer bullets and in short action. The 300 PRC also for longer bullets. I have all four. It should always be mentioned the PRCs and some other newer cartridge designs include a longer throat for the longer bullets. I have found getting lighter shorter bullets to perform well in those difficult.

The Savage 110 Bear Hunter in .375 Ruger weighs like 8.4lbs, but is meant for a scope. So until you get the round loaded, scope and rings and a sling, you'd probably be at 9lbs or so. Still lighter than the H&H rifles but heavy enough to cut some of the recoil. It also has a removable brake.

@@joshuacharron1447 about to ramble; Since I was a kid growing up reading outdoor magazines in the 60's and 70's I was fascinated by the 375HH. Then Finn AAgard tells me that the 375HH is the ultimate world hunting cartridge. I actually thought I would be quite a traveling guy when I grew up. Did not happen,LOL. So, 375 Ruger came along. researched it , watched it. then the Patriot came along, watched it (reviews) , then Sportsmansguide was selling it for about 315! Got it!. Already had reviewed reloading data for reduced loads!. Before the rifle showed up I already accumulated the brass, bullets, powder and Dies. 235 Grain at 2000 MV. Deer, pig, etc. Went to range with Superformance 250 GMX and the reloads. There were two older gentlemen there that I knew who are in the 70's, then there are myself and my buddy. Superformance first. I think I did the calculation at 54 LBS recoil. 7.75 lb rifle? scoped. 6.4 bare rifle. I pull off the first shot, could not stop laughing and exclaiming "THATS IT??" My buddy shot, same response. I then offered the rifle to the two guys who of course "no way' . I explained just roll with it, you are not in a tactical situation where you are leaning into the rifle to maintain target acquisition, just roll with it , relax. I let those two guys shoot four rounds at 3 buck a shot because they were having so much fun. Range time. 100 yards off sandbags, with a ....drumroll,,, barska scope on it. Only one I had at the time that weighed over a pound; to add weight to the rifle. Factory load, sub moa, reloads hit same point of impact as the factory GMX, best three round group 1/2 inch . Two shooters, me and my buddy. Three groups fired, average group 3/4 inch Am I happy ? OH HEll Yess!

7.6# rifle, but after you add a scope and rings/ bases and maybe a sling you'll be to 8.5-9#.

375 Ruger is a great cartridge. However if your cartridges don't make it to your destination (they must be packed separately) your PH will have 375 H&H or will able to acquire with little problem. It is the African 30-06 !

Great cartridge but my philosophy is to use a common cartridge so ammo can be found everywhere. I can't imagine trying to find 375 Ruger in places like: Pinedale or Buffalo, WY; Meeker, CO; or Libby, MT.

In theory this a good idea. However, in the current climate there is no promise you will find .270 Win or .243 or even .308 in any town during hunting season. I personally take steps to avoid this issue ever happening to me. I alway take a backup rifle and ammo. I always pack ammo and hunting tags in my clothes tote with my medications. I always have at least 60-120 rounds of ammo per hunting rifle caliber on hand. I have never suffered one of those terrible moments people talk about happening. Knock on wood. 😂

I could probably look this up myself, but I didn't. Has anyone heard reports of sticky bolts or extraction issues in Africa? Back in the day when 416 rem was a little bit of a thing I could go to the range on a hot July day just let my ammo and rifle sit in the sun and end up with both of those issues. Never had anything close to similar happen with 416 Rigby.

Andrew Russette never heard of sticky bolts running the 375... Now what some might find “sticky” is if they’re used to shooting a push feed action and go to controlled feed..

When I hear people praise the .30-06 Springfield as the '...father of so many cartridges' I want to point out the 8x57mm gewehr 1888 commission rifle cartridge. (No, it was not designed by Paul Mauser, but he knew a good thing when seen.) That cartridge sired the .30-06 Springfield, which in turn sired a bunch of cartridges including the 7.62x51mm NATO round which sired even more rounds. The .375 H&H is primarily an African use cartridge as there isn't much game in the Americas that require such a massive round. Perhaps some of the really large bears that will eat one if not prudent. I have a Ruger 77 Hawkeye in .375 Ruger. I have done a grand total of ten reloads (all solids) and I have a box of factory ammo but I haven't taken it out and shot it yet. I will use a standing rest, as opposed to a bench rest. And I just don't like belted cases.

@@georgewhitworth9742 That is probably more accurate. Especially for those who know and appreciate the chain of progression. The '03 cartridge did come first in 1903 (imagine!). The 1903 cartridge was identical to the '06 cartridge, save the '06 cartridge was .03 inches shorter to prevent the '03 round from chambering in the new configured chamber. So properly I should have said the 8x57mm round GRANDSIRED the .30-06 Springfield and so on. I shall now go to my room.

Another issue. The .375H&H feeds in a Mauser claw extraction action liked greased damned lightning. It is smooth as BUTTER!!!! The Ruger doesn’t even come near the feeding of a well conditioned Mauser in the Holland. Not anywhere near! The Ruger gets you about 150 to maybe 200 FPS longer. However of my 8 trips hunting over on Safari not a single shot taken was more than 180 yards. and I could have easily closed that distance but decided to take a further shot as to not disrupt another Hunter. The additional benefit you didn’t mention is that there is a well known truth that the .30-06 in 180 grain and the .375H&H in 300 have the exact same bullet trajectory. I am. It kidding. They are almost to the inch the same. If you pointed them side by side they would hit almost in sync. It’s that close!!!!!!! That’s a gigantic benefit when you take a two-gun battery over there to hunt plains game with your ‘06 and your H&H for heavy game.

According to Chuck Hawk‘s recoil table, a 375 Ruger weighing 8 ounces less, recoils 27% more than a 375 H&H, shooting a 300 grain projectile at 20 ft./s faster. This is why the 375 Ruger, along with availability of ammunition, is dead on the vine. There is absolutely no advantage to using this caliber, especially since there is only one rifle chambered for this round. Get yourself an M70 Winchester in 375 H&H. End of story.
