My favourite 10cc song, and 12 years old me completely bought into the story when I heard it, even without having any idea how technically accomplished the band was. Rubber Bullets next, I think.

I'm Mandy Fly me" was what the air hostess said into the camera at the end of a well known television commercial for a particular airline in the UK. It is from a real commercial.

Definitely the best song from one of the best and talented bands to come out of the 70s . This is without doubt a drugs related song though .

10cc, yet another 70's 'supergroup' from the UK! How about some Sweet, or Slade, or Mud, or Darts, or Imagination, or Gibson Brothers, or Hot Chocolate, or The Real Thing, or even some O.M.D. or Ian Dury & the Blockheads (incredible bass player!), or Dr Feelgood, or The Lambrettas, or Secret Affair, or Souxsie & the Banshees, or Fun Boy Three, or The Selector, or The Specials, or Yazoo, or some incredible a cappella from The Flying Pickets!

This one is about an ad for British airways (or some airline) and how he was convinced to take a flight because the girl advertising it was so pretty. Aeroplane crashes and air hostess saves his life but dies in the process. Think that’s the general gist anyway. Ah the 70’s, what can you say you don’t get shit like that these days

A definite Twilight Zone vibe, inspired by a series of posters issued by National Airlines. Like the very best songs of this type, it leaves you wondering. Did the entire thing take place in the protagonist's head? Is the story a series of metaphors for a sexual encounter that went wrong? And why was she called Mandy, which in the 70s would have been a fairly clear reference to a British pharmaceutical product that acted as a downer? The sample from 'Clockwork Creep' that introduces the song includes the phrase 'what goes up must come down down down down down,' which can be interpreted any number of ways. I suspect that 10cc knew all this and were just messing with our heads. But as messing goes, it was pretty entertaining stuff.

@@agemoth The Beatles never recorded a song as derivative and excruciatingly awful as 'Donna', then sat back and laughed as it reached #2 in the UK charts. The joke was on us, of course, though few people realised it at the time. It was only when I heard 'Old Wild Men' that I began to think there was something different going on here, that I was experiencing what I'd later understand as an expression of the human condition. A few months later 'I'm Not In Love' was released, surely the most disturbing song ever to top the UK charts. Listen to the lush, comforting background track, the guy is still - psychologically - in his mother's womb. 'Be quiet! Big boys don't cry...' That isn't healthy. I was lucky enough to see them perform a free open-air gig at the Sunderland Airshow a few years ago. By then it was Graham Gouldman + session musicians that had backed the band in the 70s, but they had the audience spellbound.
