    Seriously, some movie maker should employ LPL to show them some real and sofisticated ways to open real locks. And the movie could get a stamp of approval from LPL. It would be fun to go see a spy movie, knowing that ALL locks that are picked, bypassed, or otherwise tampered with, are done so in a realistic way.

  • @martinnyhjemrasmussen2948

    @martinnyhjemrasmussen2948

    2 жыл бұрын

    That scene was epic yes.. Did you know it all happened because of diarrhea? Harrison Ford had been ill with Dysentery for several days while shooting 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' with director Steven Spielberg. The script called for a three and a half page fight between Indiana Jones and the scimitar guy, but Ford asked if they could shoot the scene differently, allowing him to spend more time in the bathroom and less time on set. Spielberg obliged, and after the swordsman did his intense and exaggerated display of skill, Ford gave that now-famous tired look, pulled out his gun, and shot the guy. And it worked! Spielberg loved it and we can't imagine that scene going any other way -- and it was all thanks to diarrhea.

    Ok, I have not watched Indiana Jones but clearly I should, that sounds like that one mission in GTASA where you breach a cargo ship and the "boss battle" is in the bridge with a dude with a sword... who you can just shoot and keep it moving. Neither can I, nor can I think of any reason why it would be put within the scanner housing. It would be much more logical for it to be within the lock housing itself; you put your finger on the fingerprint scanner, that would then give an electric signal to the lock housing if the fingerprint matches, the electric signal actuates the relay in the lock housing unlocking the lock, and voilá. It would still be just as easy to unlock with a strong magnet if the relay were in the lock housing, but at least it would make more sense than putting the relay in the scanner housing.

Just make the fingerprint-reader stupid and put all the logic in that other box. That way an attacker would have to find a way to fake the correct datastream from the fingerprint reader to the logic box.

    There are fingerprint, RFI and code lock systems with an additional interface which uses the Wiegand protocol. This seems to be an industry standard for lock systems. The Wiegand interface is connected to a special controller board installed inside the house which activates a relay in the house, which then opens the door. These China electronic boards and compatible locks are also dirt cheap. Sure, the installation of such a system will be more expensive but it will also resist an attack for some extra seconds.

A finger with a fingerprint can be cut off, etc. So basically there is no 100% protection even if the lock is super good. A person who want to get it will get it, locks are just making it harder.

Even with high side switching it won't be a problem when using a PMOS or a bootstrap circuit (like an NMOS H-bridge driver does). Motor driver units use this and often you can apply an external supply voltage for the motor. For isolation there are options that can be added if necessary, but I don't think a high isolation rate is needed here.

They could break your windows, etc. A lock is meant to be a convenient way to keep you safer, not safe. It's meant to not impede on your access to your home/goods while impeding on others to access your home/goods. Not stop them out right. It's cheaper to replace a lock than a window.

    I am astounded by this. As an electronics engineer, I always previously assumed a coded signal is sent from the entry sensor/keypad to the unlocking mechanism. This is not my field, but who would even consider having a direct link of any kind to the unlocking solenoid in a security based design. Shocking!

    I had set a system like this up about a year ago but we used a locking handicap button and found during set up the metal case is suspectable to static, so if you build up static with your hand and put you hand by the button and discharge to it the door will open, likewise if you take an electric car key and tap the button housing with it it will also open. Luckily security wasn't the primary reason for them being installed.

    Placement of the sensor can help get around this vulnerability. The sensor closes the relay for several seconds after verification, but the magnet only works when held against it. Putting the sensor out of arm's reach of the sensor means you would need two people to get in. A reaching device might be used also, but a security guard watching would notice either the two person move or the use of a hook to get the door open. Still not infallible, but security is usually more about dissuading someone than being perfect.
