105-Year-Old Chicago Marathon Master Bea Lumpkin Shares Exercise, Diet, & Mental Health Tips

Спорт

At 105, Beatrice “Bea” Lumpkin keeps at her daily exercise with vigor and zeal. She’s a marathon master, born in the midst of the Spanish Flu pandemic and living through the most recent pandemic all while fighting for social justice and workers’ rights along the way. In fact, she’s still working with others across generations to get people out to vote and to ensure fair treatment of workers. Do you remember the viral presidential election story about a 102-year-old woman in a homemade hazmat suit casting her absentee ballot in a mailbox? That was BEA!
In this video, you’ll learn about this Chicago legend, what makes her a marathon master, and what she practices to stay fit and keep a sound mind even in stressful times. Learn about longevity from Bea, an expert on the subject!
A few facts about Bea (in addition to what you’ll pick up in the video):
1. On meat: “I prefer fish to meat, but I do eat meat also. At 14, I went vegetarian for moral reasons, but as the Depression intensified, I ate whatever.”
2. On sports: “As a teenager, I was on the James Monroe High School swimming team-only a few months.”
3. On her 3 balance exercises, each recommended to be repeated 30 times every day:
a. Sit and Stand-Sit down in a chair and stand up.
b. Knee Lifts-Bend knee and lift it waist high.
c. Side Leg Extensions-Place a resistance band near both ankles and then side step, stretching the leg you are lifting to the side.
4. On dancing: “I will admit that I love to dance, but there are few opportunities.”
5. On her daily food consumption: These days “I eat less of everything, including sweets.”

@RookieRunnersPod, I am so happy to hear that you watched and enjoyed the interview! Bea is indeed an inspiration. She makes me feel that I need to start practicing my push-ups this weekend! I had an intense running and stretching session today, so perhaps push-ups are in the cards for tomorrow! Thanks to Bea for putting the thought in mind!

This lady is wonderful. She is so smart and shows that while aging does affect you it doesn’t mean you give up. You must still live with purpose and continue doing what is best for yourself. She should be the poster for longevity and success in life.
