102" Giant flying wing

Ойын-сауық

A CCD collaboration.
102" wingspan, 60 class electric motor, 80A speed control, 14x7 APC prop, 6s 5000 battery.
Needs a few minor tweaks before the next flight but it flies pretty sweet as is :)
Servos are a little weak, blowing back at higher speeds, and the angle of attack when sitting on the ground isn't positive enough.
Didn't have a Dremel at the field to shorten the gear legs, and as you can see on landing they're digging in, along with the SFG's. Oops!
Minor issues that will be remedied before the next video.
Just wanted to post some vide to show that it's built and flying, basically.
Great job Dennis and Colton!
And FFS give me a break about the video. It's an iPhone, and I'm not a pro :) I was just happy to see it fly and get it captured at all.

    I observed the behavior of this device in the air twice. In a word, this can be expressed as harmony. You have managed to create something that is in balance, very docile and with little drag.

    That's a runway for brave pilots. I can't imagine how many planes are lost in those trees. How many hours, scratches and death defying struggles over cliffs and high up in trees we've had recovering planes from the bushland surrounding our field! Great vid and thanks from Sydney, Aust - Dave

    I guarantee you there's still some planes in and around those trees. LOL :) Yeah, they're not all worth the scratches and the very real risk of snakes, ticks, yellowjackets and hornets at times. So I try to live by the motto "Crash CLOSE!"

    I absolutely love the silent, momentum driven glide that it enters. That whoosh sound is just so cool. Also, I think the plane seems a bit underpowered. For all that noise from the motor, it sure isn't getting much speed...

    mr amazing I agree, for such a large plane a tractor mounted prop would probably be better economically. Also a plane that size would have a hard time going racing speeds as I think finding a capable motor to do so would be hard. Maybe mount two pushers would help

    The chord of that wing, and the weight and size... That thing just wants to float, and the motor can't push it any faster than it is. Fly it on a day with enough of a breeze, and it could hover or VTOL.

    Maybe similar. This is definitely a one-off. Colton drew this one up mostly using the TLAR method I think. Maybe he will see and chime in some day. Then Dennis did all the hard work inside, with nothing much besides an idea of what we all wanted and some tried-and-true construction methods. And a 91" Extra's carbon wing tube plus a couple smaller tubes just for good measure :)

    They're some off the shelf electric retract Colton happened to have laying around. Fun Fact: The legs bent and on the next outing we almost lost the wing twice due to radio brownout (Before the circuit breakers on the retracts popped, each time). For subsequent outings, the retracts got their own battery :)

    It's intent was to be a "Mother Ship" for three other wings. Three of the smaller combat type wings fit. Two up top, one underneath. (Or vice-versa. Can't recall after we added retracts) Anyhow, we never got around to finishing it. Maybe some day.

  • @hughhemington9559

    @hughhemington9559

    7 жыл бұрын

    Even if you carried even one combat wing a distance using the mothership, you'd have to fly it all the way home on its own, and it would need enough FPV xmit power to provide video at the max distance (or have auto RTL). I've seen one quad launch another one, but just as a goof.

  • @dcamchris

    @dcamchris

    7 жыл бұрын

    FPV wasn't the thought, though that's cool :) The initial thought was a simple 4-pilot event demo. One giant wing takes off, does a circuit with mild aerobatics, then three smaller wings splinter off. All four do various aerobatics, formations, and/or perhaps a bit of combat. Good fun stuff, but we just didn't get to finish.

  • @dcamchris

    @dcamchris

    12 күн бұрын

    They're definitely not required. More to give a bit of side area to be able to do things like 4-point rolls. (Late in this second video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/k5mg09tvmaypYLw.htmlsi=Jzjo8AqusKYspkZz) Quite honestly, they are more for protecting the wingtips than anything else... and to provide a bit more authority to the elevons in slower flight. But yeah, it would fly fine without them.
