iamtherealzombie There’s a reason scientific studies have probability values. We acknowledge that the events could be random, and have tests to help us reasonably rule that out. We also look at how strong the effect is - big changes need small sample sizes, and minor changes need large samples. At one place I worked (a theater), I didn’t bother with keys, as raking the locks was much faster. The locks were worn, so the keys took jiggling. I raked the locks hundreds of times, with no failures, in under one second. Those could have all been luck, but given the sample size (large) and magnitude of the effect (near instantly), the odds of it being a fluke are effectively zero. If it only worked occasionally, or it took anywhere from 1 second to 40 minutes, it would likely be a fluke.

We have a lockbox outside the office at work with a spare master building key in it that's a mechanical keypad. Using your "hold the mechanism tight and push buttons" method I discovered it was decoded even more easily than your example in the video, as the "wrong" numbers would not budge but the "right" ones clicked into place easily. I already knew the combination to it, but if I didn't, and didn't have the MASTER master key in my pocket already, I'd have new free reign to the building.

Yeah, same here, I'd love to see the mechanism they put together for this one. I think that's the best part of lockpicking, this battle of ingenuity between the lockmaker and the picker, as one tries to create a mechanism that can only be opened with the secret, while the other tries to extract this secret from the mechanism itself and jump through the hoops. Seeing LPL succeed is one thing, but knowing exactly what the challenge was and how he overcame it is what makes it interesting.

I had access to the code by a phone cal but of course I had o try opening it first as code locks was my entry point to the lock picking world. Ge Supra C500, since there is no way to tension the mechanism I had no luck. I found one video on KZread on how to open the lock, but it did not work on that unit. I later found claims that there are to versions of the box and the second generation does not allow that attack. The Supra c500 is the only police approved lock box in the UK I also found out. The writer likes it because it's keyless and he can leave his keys at home, and his wife likes it because it doesn't use batteries as she is afraid that one day they'll forget to change them on time. I instantly thought of this video and while it is nice to not need batteries, or have keyless entry, this isn't a good choice.

Think the biggest problem on the keypad is, that they use combintaions without repeating numbers and no permutations, neither variations. So you just have pick 6 of 12 nubers (or buttons) in random order, which is pretty easy. Even by bruteforcing the code you have to go through 924 numbers at maximum, which means even a lock like your [966] vid gives you more security, because you have to pic from 9999 numbers.

So the gist of this is that the lock is a 2D Pin Grid. And all the same tricks as for pin tumblers apply but in 2 dimensions and I don't need picks just my fingers :P

Does that same sort of decoding work with the Simplex (e.g. model 1010) mechanical keypad door locks? Those were used at many companies that I've worked at over the years for restricted access areas like computer server rooms and such.

Is there a keypad lock that you would recommend for climates like Indiana where it can get very cold and pretty hot as well?

Have you ever thought of designing your own lock or working with a company to make one because you know so much about common weaknesses and attacks and I think would end up being a very good lock

Most ABLOY (Aktiebolaget Lukko Osakeyhtio) brand R&D came about just like that. Lockpicking guy in Finland took every new lock as a challenge, until I believe they just hired him to design countermeasures on payroll. The locks are as good as standard in Finland, so the company has provided some kind of lockpick drill tool for first responders to use if they can't wait for a locksmith. What they didn't take into account when designing more elaborate locks, though was kids. Our 6 year old broke a $600 ABLOY deadbolt by shoving a chopstick in there, because he wanted to get in the home office in another building on our property, and in stead of ask me to open the door, or take my key chain that was within reach of kids, he broke the dang thing while I was in the bathroom. Six year olds, man.
