101-year-old artist Carmen Herrera seeks "order" in work
Carmen Herrera's art career began in the 1940s. Since then, the Cuban native has worked in Paris and New York, largely unnoticed. At 101 years old, Herrera is receiving recognition many believe is long overdue -- a solo exhibit at New York's Whitney Museum of American Art. Vladimir Duthiers reports.

She was 101 years old at that time. She has painted for 80+ years. So obviously, she is from a time where abstract geometric painting was totally new and a high mark of modernist styles. She says herself that her paintings just started to sell a couple of years ago. Obviously, the art market wants to buy her art now because of her story but that doesn't change a thing about her art itself.
This is art? OMG WTF, are you serious? If this is art then I am Monet. You think this is good art just go to any kindergarten class and you will find lots of talent. No offence to the old lady but come on!

All of these abstractionists could paint representational works. So the question is why did they choose not to? Keep asking yourself why and stay open to the answers. Side note, the "If this is art, then I am [Genius"] comment is recycled every 30 years. People once thought Monet was nuts. People thought Da Vinci was sacrilegious. No - they used their talent intentionally, and it's up to you to do the work to discover why.
