$100M CEO Explains How to Build A Brand in 2024

Want to SCALE your business? Go here: acquisition.com
Want to START a business? Go here: skool.com/games
If you’re new to my channel, my name is Alex Hormozi. I’m the founder and managing partner of Acquisition.com. It’s a family office, which is just a formal way of saying we invest our own money into companies. Our 10 portfolio companies bring in over $200,000,000+ per year. Our ownership stake varies between 20% and 100% of them. Given this is a YT channel, and anyone can claim anything, I’ll give you some stuff you can google to verify below.
How I got here…
21: Graduated Vanderbitl in 3 years Magna Cum Laude, and took a fancy consulting job.
23 yrs old: Left my fancy consulting job to start a business (a gym).
24 yrs old: Opened 5 gym locations.
26 yrs old: Closed down 6th gym. Lost everything.
26 yrs old: Got back to launching gyms (launched 33). Then, lost everything for a 2nd time.
26 yrs old: In desperation, started licensing model as a hail mary. It worked.
27 yrs old: "Gym Launch" does $3M profit the next 6 months. Then $17M profit next 12 months.
28 yrs old: Started Prestige Labs. $20M the first year.
29 yrs old: Launched ALAN, a software company for agencies to work leads for customers. Scaled to $1.7mmo within 6 months.
31 yrs old: Sold 75% of UseAlan to a strategic buyer in an all stock deal.
31 yrs old: Sold 66% of Gym Launch & Prestige Labs at $46.2M valuation in all-cash deal to American Pacific Group. (you can google it)
31 yrs old: Started our family office Acquisition.com. We invest and scale companies using the $42M in distributions we had taken + the cash from the $46.2M exit.
32 yrs old: Started making free content showing how we grow companies to make real business education accessible to everyone (and) to attract business owners to invest or scale their businesses.
34 yrs old: I became co-owner of Skool.com to help the many people who want to start a business online do so.
Today: Our portfolio now does $200M/yr between 10 companies. The largest doing $100M/yr the smallest doing $5M per year. Our ownership varies between 20% and 100% ownership of the companies. Many of them we invested in early and helped grow (which is how we make our money - not youtube videos).
To all the gladiators in the arena, we’re all in the middle of writing our own stories. The worse the monsters, the more epic the story.
You either get an epic outcome or an epic story. Both mean you win.
Keep crushing. May your desires be greater than your obstacles.
Never quit,
Alex
FULL DISCLOSURE
I make content to make money - just - on a longer time horizon than most. I want to build trust with business owners so we can find the best ones and help them scale. And if they’re awesome, write them a check and go all the way as partners.

Notes for self: Brand is association of two things. If you associate your logo, name etc with something/someone your potential buyers like, then you're doing positive branding. Opposite would be negative(bad) branding. Your product os what people are exposed to for the longest time, so make sure your product is good. If even a small thing sucks about you, it will make your branding bad. To ammend for this, do a lot more other things your audience likes. Brand can pull towards or away. If you can steer clear of controversy then you'll have a more 'towards' appeal. You can judge whether your branding is working or not by measuring increases in reach, and seeing whether people do what you ask of them.

This is by far the most impactful video on brand I’ve ever watched. I’m on my second time through lol. Just occurred to me that building associations kind of works the same way as customer acquisition. You use the core 4 to drive associations (with people or other brands at least). So you might pay for endorsements like Nike, or make posts about associations you want to build, OR if your product or service is good enough, people will send “referrals.” Kind of like a cool kid at a party wearing a branded shirt (because he liked the associations the brand had built). Other kids at the party buy it purely because of the association they built between the “cool kid” and the shirt. This was an association the cool kid built for you, without you paying him anything. Kind of like a referral.

I would suggest one thing to think about. It's the definition of learning because Alex describes what is called "progress" rather than learning. Which I think should be described as the process of understanding how something works and memorising that for another time. (Rather than applying what someone told you to do. Which after doing it over and over would make you understand certain stuff eventually but there's more to it imo.)

Not many doing this imo) but then shortly after I noticed no audience. Good move. Good video. Only a few minutes in and this is exactly what I’m wanting to learn about. This topic isn’t spoken on well but it is definitely most important for absolutely any business. Online or in person. Down to the last detail.

As a result you uploaded this video on how you built your brand because you now have proof that it works and can be done.

Great lessons overall… the Dylan mulvaney pairing in my opinion was a deviation from the mission statement, bringing people together over great beer… highlighting or putting anyone on a pedestal literally separates them instead of bringing them together… the pairing wasn’t bad, it was the presentation of the pairing. In Texas the BlueBell ice cream issue is another great example of how a brand can survive serious issues, even killing people.

Alex, it would be wonderful if you wrote a book entirely on brand building. There are so many scattered and contradicting information on this topic.

Brilliant insights that no one in his core audience can actually implement. If they could, he’d have case studies outside of Apple, Coca Cola, and other iconic brands.

To condense it: your brand has an identity. Customers trade their dollars for your product so they can adopt that identity

the flower bouquet analogy is amazing and helped me explain something that has been on my mind for years but I never knew how to put it into words . You have three brands; Nike, Adidas, and Gymshark. I have never bought anything from Gymshark because I just never liked their bouquet of flowers and in fact they have some ugly flowers. Never liked Adidas' bouquet either. Nike has had some ugly flowers, but their bouquet is so massive that it is ok. Clearly it comes down to personal taste but I wouldn't mind wearing Adidas, I would never wear Gymshark though and the reason can be due to branding.

Great video. I took a couple good nuggets for sure, especially from the unique scope you look at branding from.
