1000 Hours Outside // Four Toddlers in Below Freezing Weather // Winter Edition 2023

Today we are sharing all about the logistics of getting outside for 1000 hours. We talk about how that looks for our family with getting kids in and out of snow gear and things like that, especially during the cold winter months, when the weather is less than ideal. Seeking to get 1000 hours outside has enhanced not just our kid's life, but our life as well. We have been so much more active this winter than we were last winter, thanks to us trying to get the kids outside. It’s been such a benefit to our mental and physical health.
In the winter it’s easy to get the winter blues. When we go outside, that all goes away. For us it was best to start tracking our hours in the fall. We had a beautiful fall and it was easy to want to be outside during that time. Building that momentum in the fall has helped us tremendously.
We heard at the beginning of starting this journey, “don’t send them, go with them.” That really stuck out to us because children want to see us prioritizing what they’re prioritizing. There’s also a lot of benefits for us as well. We have developed a value system of being outside! Being intentional to get outside consistently helps you realize different features of your neighborhood. The same park feels so different depending on the season. It’s so special to us that we are clocking these hours together as a family. It brings so much life to our overall home. We are so glad we have incorporated this into our home and are planning to continue for years to come!

We are just about at 100 hours for 2023! I love that my kids now have the mindset that “If it’s cold, I need to put my gloves on” vs “It’s cold, I need to come inside” (on most days) because they are excited to play.

After watching your last video about dressing for all weather I ordered rain suits for my kids. It really made such a huge difference on rainy days. My kids will play for hours and literally roll around in the mud and I just strip off the outer layer and leave it out on my porch. Genius! Thank you for the *a ha! lightbulb moment

Set up a small tent outside or even a tarp loaded with blankets or pillows or toys. Leave the flap down and let them play fort outside in the rain! Or picnic, or read a book relating to their “fort” (for example: Swiss family Robinson, kidnapped, treasure island etc)

I needed this today--I live in a part of the country where there are regular sub-zero days, days when ice doesn't get cleared for days from the neighborhood (so it's not safe to walk or drive somewhere), etc. 33 hours outside with my 1 year old so far this year!

What I am struggling with is that I get bored when my 1,5 year old daughter is enjoying the outside and playing. Most of the time I’m just standing there while she plays. I was also wondering what you are wearing to dress for the rain, but I think I got my answer in this video because you spent all money on the kids haha. I’m from the Netherlands, where it’s raining A LOT.

You both spoke to my soul today! So encouraging. My husband and I are deciding where to live and the lack of sunlight has been a big factor for me. This gives me a different perspective that I can thrive anywhere if I just suck it up and get outside. Thank you for sharing your heart!

I just want to say I just discovered your channel and it is so encouraging. We have a 5,3, and 1 year old. We have so many of the same values but I feel like you’re one step ahead of me in making many of these things happen, helpful helping me reach the last 20 percent of my goal. Thank you! I wish we lived in the same city. I think we would be great friends!

I considered doing the 1000 hours outside this year but decided it would add a burden to my life right now. That said we love to get outside! I love the weekly hike idea! In the summer we spend lots of time at the river and lakes. Over the past few years we have acquired enough kayaks for the whole family and that has been super fun!

Love the 1,000 Hours Outside movement! I attended some of Ginny Yurich’s classes at a homeschool convention last year and have been sold ever since. We are almost there, at 908 hours as of today! She has free printable tracking charts on her website that are beautiful, I had one made into poster size that I have hanging in my laundry room (so it doesn’t throw off the neutral aesthetic of the rest of my home 🤣). The kids love coloring in their hours each day. I live in South Florida so it’s definitely easier to reach the goal, but as you said in the summer can be brutal unless we are doing a water activity. It’s been a beautiful year for our family doing this! You all are doing amazing keeping up with it in below freezing weather!

Hi guys, i wanted to ask if you could (or already have and I missed it) share a list of books you read in preparation for homeschooling? I also remember there was a book Lisa Voetberg shared in her interview. I have discovered you recently and I have been listening to your videos/podcasts all the time! They have really helped me center my thoughts again and want to come closer to Jesus again! I believe discovering you hasn’t been a coincidence! May God continue blessing your work, you are amazing!

For people that have a baby or young toddler (or both, like in my case haha) baby wearing IN the pool is a game changer! I wear my baby in a carrier and then I can help my husband with the 3 "big" kids. Super helpful! Plus, then the baby and I don't melt in the Texas heat.

Your videos inspire me so much! I tried 1000 hours last year but ended up giving up keeping track. I am trying again this year and we are enjoying it! I have promised the kids a special treat for completing their first 100 hours. Is there a way I can email you? Thank you again for your content! Love it!

Hey! Do you do school outside when its cold? Or just do school inside then go out? We spend our first part of the day doing chores, school, mommy time, etc...and then theres lunch and naps. Maybe we just spend second part of the day outside? I would love for us to get outside more!

I would love to see how you prep for your hikes. I have a 9 month old and his naps get in the way of getting out for long hikes - how do you / will you prep an older baby? My concern is naps now that he doesn't sleep on me anymore.

They can sleep on the car ride home if they don't nap in your pack. We found that ours was much more adaptable than we expected. You mention he doesn't sleep on you. Are you using a carrier or a pack? I highly recommend a Deuter Kid Comfort pack. That might help with him napping during long hikes too.

@Stephanie Ritz he would sleep in the car, I guess that could be the compromise. He's super heavy so I've had to switch about 2 months ago to a proper hiking backpack for our daily hikes. We have a Deuter one though I'm not sure of the style.

It’s funny that you mentioned Texas being hard in the summer. It’s true, it can be hard being outside in the heat but because I’m so used to the heat (and LOVE it) it’s actually easier for me to spend more time outside. I hate the cold and on 60 degree, rainy days I don’t want to be outside. In the summer we camp and use a fan while we’re sleeping and camp at parks that have water activities. This year, not only are we trying to get 1000 hours outside but we’re also trying to visit as many Texas State Parks as possible. We took our seven week old hiking in the Ergo along with our other kiddos 🥰
