1000 Hours Outside Challenge: Watch This If You Plan To Do It

We are on year 2 of the 1000 Hours Outside Challenge. I learned SO much and grew so much through this challenge. It really did change our family's culture and how we spend our time. I saw my kids each begin to love being outside more (not all like it as much as some). We began to hike more as a family on the weekends, and aimed for multiple pockets of outside time each day before and after naps.
It encouraged me to get creative to find new ways to be outside.
From actively planning places we could go, to eating outside more, to increasing family walks, to celebrating marking off our 1000 hours tracker with the kids each day...it got us out in the fresh air MORE than if we hadn't been tracking. This is why I love it.
You can research the benefits of being outdoors...I don't go into that in this video. Fresh air, new memories, developing a greater appreciation for nature, becoming more observant, slowing down, making less messes inside, etc. So many good things!
BUT...don't ruin this for yourself by feeling like a failure if you don't reach 3 hours a day, or 1000 hours a year. Remember to set your own families idea of a win. And not to compare your family with another. Don't agonize over what activities count. If it's a win for you, count it. If not, don't. Remember, this is not a competition with other families. It's to get yours outside!

We recently got to meet Ginny! Hearing her speak, was so motivating and inspirational! I went with two other moms that help teach at the co-op I started, and we all decided to change up how we do things and will be switching to an outdoor themed co-op instead! We are so excited for the changes that are coming next fall and possibly this summer! I did the 1000 hours last year but also lost track halfway through. Now that I have other moms doing it with us, I'm hoping to go all the way this year!

I love this! How fun to meet her in person. The nature groups I’ve been a part of have blessed our family so much. We come home feeling happier and refreshed. Ive never had the guts to start one though, awesome job! I wish you the best with your co-op!

O cool y’all are doing it too! This winter was rough for hours (5 months of snow was hard for me!) but hoping to be out a lot this spring making memories and enjoying God’s creation! Did you know 1000 hours outside has a nature curriculum? I just found it this year. It’s pretty cool.

@@LizBlueandHazel I agree, winter was rough! Spring is here where we live but it’s back in the 30 degree temps and raining a lot!! I’ve never really checked out the curriculum but we do read a lot of the suggested picture books. I’m also doing the book club this year too and love it!

I am so excited to try this! What time do you normally go out on school days? I'm trying to figure out how to balance homeschooling, chores and outdoor time since my little kids still need a lot of supervision.

When my kids were littler it was trickier for sure because they always required supervision. We usually tried to go out when the sun wasn’t too hot in the morn, and did our best to create shade with umbrellas. I’d also plan in a short walk or park time then or evening pool time at the local pool. Now we get a ton of time in in warm months, like eating outside, outside yard games, i put hot wheels outside, etc. it helps having a fence and shade and comfy chairs for me 😂. We also school out there many days if it’s not too hot. This is my goal right now because it’s snowy here for 5 months and we barely get out at all then because I just don’t do well with so much cold 😌 biggest thing I’ve learned is just do your best to aim to get out every day some, and assess what you need to buy to make it more enjoyable.
