I wanna grow cherry tomatoes with cocopeat & perlite etc, but I'm really curious what nutrients & fertilizers to use - 1)- Right after germination. 2)- What plant growth fertilizers to use since transplantation to till flowering stage. 3)- And once it starts flowering, what blooming fertilizers to use? If you could please share any detailed videos on this, that'd be of great help.

    Propagation: I place the propagation tray on a solid tray and bottom water no more than 4mm in the bottom tray. I top water only once when the seeds are placed. I find it reduces molding in my area. Cheap Tomatoes: If you are late in the season and need more plants I look in the garden centers for transplants. What is left generally is very leggy which is why they are left over and about to be thrown away. I can usually get 4-5 6 packs for $1. When I get them home I repot them deep so the soil level is just below the first leaves. The entire stem will go to root and the plant will take off. A second succession for little money and no delay waiting for seeds to sprout.

    Thank you sir for the excellent video👍 Has me excited to try this out ASAP. I had 2 questions: 1) Would the nutrients build up in the cocopeat over a few days as water evaporates or gets absorbed by the plants? Can the EC increase to very high value? 2) What are the benefits of a full blown Dutch bucket system over this apart from reduction in water consumption? The simplicity of this method is really exciting.

    Hello Sir, i have a question regarding cherry tomatoes and sunlight. I want to grow cherry tomatoes using kratky method, (passive hydroponic), in an area of my balcony that recieves sunlight in only area. So, for initial yield, i want to put my plant there. But when it starts growing, i want to make a trellis connection extending to the roof, which is completely shaded, because there is already infratsutructure there for the tomato plant to climb on. What should i do? Will the creeping plant require sunlight too or can it only be for the base plant?

The 18 minutes just flew by. It is nice to see links to the nutrients in the description. One question that needs answering is how much nutrients are absorbed per day until flowering starts and then afterwards. The impact of temperature on EC. May be you could include this in your next video.

    Someone has played a trick on me, my cherry Baxter Bushes are over 5ft. Nothing bushy about them, they're sun leaves are elongated. Six plants tapering down 1/2 ft per plant. They're all starting to flower so I'm treating them like indeterminates because they're indoors. Blooms everywhere and opening and closing as expected. I'm tapping, brushing and blowing pollen. It's my first tomato grow so imagine 6 hydroponic 5ftish crazy tomato plants in my living room ..😳 Blame my run on sentences on them teaching me indeterminate habits of not stopping. They're out of control so I'm out of control. They should have determined themselves so now up to me...wish me luck

    Very useful, Thank you very much. Want to know if so many leaves are required or we can start removing leaves from bottom? Also, can we still keep EC of 2 - 2.5 if the temperature is on higher side?

  • @TheGeekgardener

    @TheGeekgardener

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for your comment. The thumbrule is that you remove the leaves that are below the first truss of fruits. This variety of cherry tomato is actually generative in nature so a little more of those leaves dont hurt. But should you see more leaves and less fruits. Cutting down on the leaves without affecting their productivity is ok. We actually keept 2-2.5 at higher temperatures also. Tomatoes can handle upto 5-6 EC. But that will cause stress on the plant at higher temperatures. The best guide for that is to check the drip and drain EC for the growing media. That will tell you whether you are on the higher side or the lower side. sorry about the long reply.

    Almost on all the farms I have setup, watering is from the top. Although bottom watering can be slightly more beneficial interms of not getting the leaves wet. Hardening may be required if there is a large difference in parameters such as temp, humidity etc between the nursery area and planting area

    Thribhuvan, sorry for the delayed reply. If you are a starter in Hydroponics, I suggest you buy the nutrients that are ready made. Get yourself familiar with basics of growing plants in Hydroponics. As you progress, once you are fully comfortable with growing plants, identifiying deficiencies etc, proceed to learn to make your own nutrients.

    if you are collecting seeds from a plant that grew from open pollinated or heirloom variety seeds, then it will grow into the same variety. if you are growing a plant from a hybrid seed, it is better to buy the seeds again from the seed source.

    Thanks for your comment. NFT systems are primarily meant for short term crops. Leafy greens are the best suited crops for NFT. Tomatoes can technically be grown in NFT ( I have grown it). But It is not viable or recommended for commercial purposes. Growing crops in cocopeat is also called Hydroponics. More specifically called Substrate culture. Best suited for long term plants.

    For example, If the instruction is to give the full grown crop an EC of 2 mS/cm then the half strenght solution will have 1mS/cm. The half strength is suggested for younger plants. When it comes to feeding tbe plants, i prefer feeding the roots than spraying. Making a concentrate depends on the product.

    Leaf miner problem is quite common while growing tomatoes. The easiest way is to spot and remove them at the earliest stage. Spray the plants with neem oil twice a week based on the instructions. Bacillus Thuringiensis spray also helps.

    Thanks for this video. I am not clear about how to water the plants. In a 12 inch pot you said it holds about 13 liters of media. Now if I want to automate the watering, how many liters of hydroponic solution would constitute one watering. Is pouring water from the top the best way or you have some tricks that I can use. I am trying to grow in the home balcony and want a optimal solution. Thanks in advance. --Raghu from Noida

  • @TheGeekgardener

    @TheGeekgardener

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Raghu, Watering should be done in such a way that it saturates the entire media inthe pot. It should be done slowly. Top drip is the best way as it uses gravity and capillarity to spread through the entire substrate. Start the drip irrigation, wait for the water to get drained at the bottom. At that time you can note down the timing and set it for regular watering. Hope this helps

    @@TheGeekgardener Hi Mani. I have been doing the Tomatoes potted in Cocopeat. I kept feeding them daily, with a nutrient solution for some time and the initial growth was great. Then they started to not grow tall and all the wonderful foliage started to get miniaturized on the top. Also they were in full Sun, which was rather strong. I think that problem also happened to my G.Basil Plants. Holy Basil kept doing great. Researching I could only find the reason to be that the concentration of the nutrients has got to be too much as every feed has nutrient in the 200-200-200 ppm NPK range. I am now trying to flush the grow medium with plain water to see if they will start to grow tall again. I need a smarter way to regulate the watering/nutrient system.. Your guidance would really help. Thanks and best. Raghu
