Potatoes love hot weather. They thrive in Idaho and Colorado because of the really warm summers. They also do well in drought. They're great when things are tough. They winter well, which is why the Eastern and Northern Europeans eat so many. Potatoes are awesome.

Thank you for another informative video. I moved into my first homestead yesterday (September 13th), and I am planning a potato patch. Your video showed me that I can plan a much smaller area than I originally thought. Thanks for saving me some space and a lot of unnecessary work. I hope your shop is doing well. You're awesome.

AWESOME ! You are saying Core ~ were you speaking of Coconut Core ? We had a huge sweet potato harvest this year, but only because we planted most of them in huge tractor tires. the ones we planted in the garden soil were mostly eaten by Voles.

Hi Luke, I have been so enjoying your videos over the last couple of months. I normally watch on the Smart TV KZread app, so I don't get the opportunity to like or comment. However, I watched this video and just had to say something. I live in Australia, and planted my first crop of potatoes yesterday. I found your video this morning and heard you mention the core gardening method. I have since checked it out, and wanted to thank you for alerting me to what looks like a great method. We are anticipating a VERY hot VERY dry summer (probably like yours), so I need to prepare. I wanted to thank you for being so inspiring. Please keep it up.

During your harvest of the red potatoes all I could think of is: Don't step in the bed! lol My son was helping me put an irrigation system in my garden beds. He took two steps in the bed and he must have seen the shock on my face! He's like, 'Uh, should I not be stepping on the soil?' LOL

According to Charles Dowding when you mulch with compost you actually can step over the bed. You need the soil to be firm.

Potato harvest videos are my favorite to watch. I might try growing some next year and I'll probably try succession planting them. I live in Texas and we don't have central air. I worry they'll go bad if I plant them all at once for one big harvest.

Great harvest! I'm going to learn more about the core system. I usually plant in the ground with no difficulty but this year we have moved and I built a potato tower. Massive fail! Thanks for sharing these videos!

Great harvest. 👏👏👏. When did you plant the potatoes? It would be cool to see a video where you compile into one video your preparation of the core bed for potatoes to planting to growing thru the season and how you took care of them monthly. Ie, any fertilizing any insect or pest control and whether or not you had to hill these potatoes??? In the mean time I am going to try and find the video where you prepared the bed using the core method. I’ve never heard of that and would like to see what that is all about.

Great presentation of the potatoes in the wheelbarrow. Those potatoes will taste extra good this winter when it's below zero with a foot of snow on the ground.

Wow. AZ is still in the triple digits. It's supposed to be 105 today. I think we've had 4 inches of rain since January and don't get any this winter if this pattern continues. Gardening has been much harder than normal here in the Sonoran desert. I like watching your videos to see what my plants could do in a different climate. We're lucky to grow sweet potatoes and they struggle in our drought

"Average temp of 81F, it's unreal how hot that is..." I'm never again going to believe someone in Michigan trying to commiserate about their "hot" summers. ;) I'd like to experience a summer where the average temp was around 81. I thought I was experiencing the lovely mythical frozen north when I lived for a while up in KY, and the summers were only about 86-89F on average. There was also at least a few full days of snow in winter! As in still on the ground, and or covering the grass before bedtime. The bunches of tiny potatoes is why I still shy away from planting potatoes in a raised bed. Grow bags or pots are the only way to be sure you got every single one! Frustrated trying to find a video of him installing a core. I want to SEE exactly what he's doing there, and what the core looks like at the time of planting too, not keep hearing about it the end of it. Ha It's likely similar to what I already do, but it might not be...

Nice harvest! This was my first year with potatoes, and I did the Ruth Stout method with weedwacking a hillside, plopping the potatoes down, and covering with hay. No watering. It was stupid easy, but I don't think it yielded as high as I would have liked, but they went to seed as well (weird tomato looking things, should be interesting next year if they make new types of plants), and I had a mole or vole and slugs to help me harvest some, Haha.

not really, because we planted a bed and a half last year. We planted the same amount per bed.

Our summer here in Ga is around 90 something with a heat index of a hundred or so. 81 isn't hot here. We would love that. Also the humidity is awful

I’ve just started watching this channel recently. What zone are you in? I’m in 4b in Minnesota so I’m wondering if your planting season lined up with ours or is a bit earlier.

Impressive harvest. How do you store them for winter? Do you have a root cellar?

Potatoes need to be washed then cured in the sun for about 3 days to harden their skins.Then stored in a very cool cellar at around 40 degrees.you might want to open a window to properly chill them .

People in Michigan like it around 70 degrees. Lol! My husband is from Missouri and laughs at us when we complain about the "heat and humidity."

Lol here too. I'm in Alabama and most of our summer is in the upper 90s with humidity that makes it feel like you're stepping into a sauna when you walk out the door. 81 is about where we are in October.

Here in Houston we have an average of 90 plus and a humidity of 90 to 70%. We thank the lord when the days are in the low 80’s.

How deep is that bed? I know you’ve developed you soil so much. I’m not there yet but I wondered how much depth you needed for potatoes.

Good video. Congratulations. I am planning to grow some potatoes of my own this year for the first time. I’m going to try some in my raised bed and others in containers. Going to try a few of your tips! Thank you! However, I’m giggling a bit that you found an average in the 80’s to be hot. You’d die here. It can be 80° inside on a August day because it’s 115° or higher outside. With an average humidity of about 60-75%, I garden in the morning or evening. I hibernate indoors during the day. But I have autoimmune issues that make high heat intolerable to me. My husband however works outdoors most days. I had tomatoes and peppers still growing until mid January when we had a freeze come in. I actually was still harvesting them too. I got about 15 tomatoes off of 5 vines right before the freeze. They had slowed in production as the horn worms found them in December when the rest of my gardens were done. But I don’t think many get any in December or January. So?…

I'm on the Texas Coast... My nice comfortable inside AC temperature is set to all of 3 to 5 degrees less than that... 81 is a perfect outdoor temperature.

Near record heat here in Maine with record breaking Humidity and not yet 6 inches of rain..., we usually have a bout 46 inches....

Hi. I just wondered if you could explain why, when I planted NW sweet cherry seeds, several of the seedlings are green as expected but 3 are pure white. I'm curious. Have you ever grown potatoes by true potato seed? I was thinking that it might be fun to try as an experiment to compare yield. It's most certainly going to be lower yield from seed, but I think that might be an interesting mini series. As my summer garden is winding down I'm planning for next year and I might plant some potatoes, although they would be from seed potatoes, not from true seed.

If you're talking about trying to get your potatoes to fruit and then collect the seeds from them, I wouldn't recommend it. The genetic variability could result in poisonous tubers.

I buy small potatoes for my seafood boils. I like how they are bite size, and they're delicious too.

What is the core you kept mentioning? Will it work for other plants?

The "heat" and "dry" helped you out. I put those in quotes because your "heat" is miniscule and I bet your "dry" was still 20+ inches of rain.

That is awesome! I do eat plant based and potatoes I go through like crazy. 20 - 30lbs a month. (I don't add margarine or butter stuff so it is really low fat low calorie.) I eat more potatoes in a month than I do of any other starch in a year. I do have a question on your pizza sauce. Now that some time has passed have they stayed sealed? I know canning books go on the side of safety so I am interested if it worked for you. :)

Luke, when are you going to start selling seed potatoes?

Potatoes like hot and dry(provided they get steady water), it is what the summers are like here in Idaho.
