I think when we (image makers) focus too much on equipment, we forget the value of location and production design. We might also discount the production value of having an acting powerhouse like Thandie Newton in our frames. I'm sure actors like her can make even a simple candle feel like a 100 million dollars!

Yes for sure set design and colours are all deliberate and create an atmosphere that will only then need a highlight to create focus for each shot. Really lovely looking. thank you for having a look at this!

Hmmm, sorry trouble is this isn't lit with one light, more like four. Each actor has a backlight up high out of shot. Look at the actress to the left and her shoulder. Plus there is ambient light. If you look at the floor shadows you can tell. Plus of course lighting outside the windows.

I know this video has been up for a while and maybe this has been mentioned before - but I wouldn’t be surprised if they had big soft overhead lights (either bounced or mats) on low intensity for both the room tone as well as their “backlights” which for me are more of a slight separation than a strong back light. Especially as this is most likely a studio build I’d not be surprised to see a bunch of lights up there (even if they are not all on). Would love to see if there are more BTS pictures available. That being said the point of your video is still a very good one, that is often overlooked here on KZread. Keep you lighting simple. Production design and location is your best friend.

This was interesting certainly and you're correct, it's so much more than the one tube. Art direction and atmosphere is key, outside of the actors that is what the camera see's. Doesn't hurt that there is serious $$$ in other equipment there. The 2 dolly's alone would be $500K+ if they are Chapman or Fisher, hard to tell. Looks like Ronford Baker Atlas Fluid heads, Arri Camera's with all the bits and pieces and are those Panavision lenses? I would guess around $1M in equipment is visible in the BTS shot. It's amazing how well the equipment we mere mortals use can get to this kind of look.

I don't understand the title of "$100 lighting setup for $100 million dollar film" when the consensus of the video is that there is tons of lighting and art direction, etc. that goes into the shot to make it look as it does. So, it isn't a $100 setup. It's a $100 million dollar setup.

I don't think too much thought is put into lighting in more than half of Hollywood film scenes .From what I've seen out here in New York they use a simple diffuser one or two lights . I believe they have a formula based on light meters and they fix and match shots in post . There is a reason why Hollywood cameras cost $250,000 dollars my friend There is a reason why the lenses on those cameras cost $30,000 . The cameras we can afford is what needs the manipulation of light and shadow to come close to the look of those cameras and lenses and what we get is a overly cinematic look that does not appear natural . People Trying too hard putting way too much effort on lighting . Get those numbers right on your meter . Create formulas and shoot your scenes .
