🇸🇷 JENNY TOURS: www.suriname-tour.com
Back in the summer of 2020, I partnered up with my friends at Jenny Tours to explore the South American country of Suriname. This tiny country along the continent’s northern coast is also South America’s smallest, but there’s a ton of unique things to do there, especially in its capital city, Paramaribo.
I spent a total of roughly 72 hours exploring and eating my way through Paramaribo, and it’s an experience I’ll never forget. Whether I was experiencing local life first-hand at the Central Market, seeing river dolphins play in the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne Rivers, or meeting local artisans at the Amerindian craft market, every day in Paramaribo was an adventure.

Suriname also has an interesting history, and because of colonialism and its after-effects, people from all over the world came there to work, whether by force or by their own free will. Because of that, the country has a unique cultural background unlike any other place on Earth, with African, Indonesian, Chinese, Indian, Dutch, and Amerindian influences in its culture and cuisine.
I explored Paramaribo’s diverse cuisine everywhere from the Chinese, Saoenah, and Kwatta Sunday Markets to a pair of its unique Indian restaurants. I mixed in some African flair at Souposo and Javanese foods at Jakarta Restaurant, and even experienced a Brazilian block party!
But I don’t want to tell you too much about Paramaribo. Instead, I want to show you! So come with me as I spend 72 unforgettable hours in Paramaribo, Suriname!

So I can always go back and forth from the Netherlands. Surinam is one of the best, most culturally diversed, most beautiful, culturally rich and amazing food and music! ❤🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷

0:18 No. French Guinea, now called Guinea, is in Africa. French Guiana, also known as Cayenne, is a French overseas territory in South America. French Guiana, Dutch Guiana (Suriname), and British Guiana (Guyana) are the three territories that comprise the Guianas region of South America.

Good Friday morning David. This was like a refresher course of all of the videos you did in Suriname. Again, all of the food was very well-prepared and looked delicious. You got me with the curried dishes though, with the first and last rotis you ate, reminded me of Trini rotis. It was also a reminder of the different nationalities that inhabit Suriname and of their diversity of customs and culture. It's amazing how those Dutch colonial houses and buildings are still standing and in good shape. I loved the aerial view where you can really see how Dutch it is. The view was very scenic and it looked like any city in the Netherlands/Holland. Though it was very long, I watched it in parts but because of the continuity, something that you do very effectively, it didn't change the essence of the documentary. So once again, very well done. Pat on your back, not forgetting your entire team. Pat on the back for everyone. I believe you said that you were going live today, so catch up with you later. In the meantime, stay safe and blessings to all of you ❤️🙏🕊️🇹🇹🇨🇦

I wanna add this: Not only are you genuinely interested in other people and their culture, the love for your own family is sometimes also shining through! This world would be a much better place, if we had the same level of interest in / appreciation for one another. Your videos brighten up my days. They kind of bring back the joy I had, while watching my favorite TV show (which I truly miss): No Reservations, with the legendary Anthony Bourdain! Keep up the good work! By the way, the video with the haircut in Guyana caught some unique moments of real human interaction: wow, people like this still exist! Loved it! And finally, I wouldn't be surprised if eating all this food would requiere a solid workout routine to burn off all those calories😅

    C. minute 21:00: tips for safety: [1] take SMALL mouthfuls, not big ones. Especially when trying dishes for the first time....some are very hot....some are very spicy.....you can choke (or worse). [2] CHEW thoroughly. If you wolf it down, you are missing a lot of the flavours in food. 100% of your taste-buds are in your mouth....not your stomach... You also have zero teeth in your stomach. So biology teaches us that we are supposed to let food spend more time in our mouth so that we maximise pleasure, optimise digestion, and then it makes everything easier for the stomach and the small intestine.

I would say when you go on tours maybe be mindful of finding a Surinamese guide who is better proficient in english (they exist) as to prevent sharing misinformation from happening because it's extremely bothersome when you're trying to highlight the culture of a country accurately. Thanks!
