100 HOUR DIGITAL DETOX CHALLENGE (addicted to our phones)

We want to try to reduce our reliance on screens so for the next 100 hours we do a digital detox challenge. We moved into our van to escape into nature but we find that screens are still a huge part of our life. We're addicted to our phones. We try to travel around rural Romania without google maps, translate or park 4 night.
Thank you so much for joining us on this episode!

I drove alone across the US in pre-cell/smart phone, pre-computer days. Honestly, I didn't even think about it. I had paper maps and I would call family every night from the motel to let them know where I was. It took a week, included travel across desolate area (Utah, Nevada) and sparsely populated areas (Colorado, Wyoming). I was pretty confident I would get assistance from others on the road since we all were all well aware of the lack of communications. A rare individual and truckers had CB radios. Now, like everyone else, I feel uncomfortable if I drive 5 minutes from the house and don't have my phone.

This is my favourite of all your videos, well done. Not only is it an important social experiment with a useful message, it is one of your better travel vlogs in that you interacted with the people, culture and landscape in a more organic way. I hope some of this seeps into your future videos. Thanks!

You could buy a proper map at the next town, get a stupidphone (text and calls only) for emergencies and family contact. You taped up the van radio, but listening to local FM radio stations and music is all part of local culture so that should be allowed?

I do this every summer. This summer i went on several multiple day hikes in the mountains. Nothing but an amazing view and animals. Mostly reindeer. Every time i do it the world suddenly seems to become a much better place cause i don't have clue what's happening in it!

Really enjoyed this video. Its so good to learn to communicate with each other and the people you meet on your journey.Although a lot older than you it reminded me of the time my husband and two friends took a vw beetle from Ireland to France and drove through the pyrenees and only had a borrowed tent with us. We used just a map and travelled all the way to Monte Carlo and thinking on it now we were probably mad bearing in mind it was 1972 and now 50 years later we are still together as are the other couple. Keep enjoying your journey and keeping us linked into your adventures. You'll know when to stop. Hopefully that won't be for a while yet. God bless and Isabel loved the dancing😊👍

Hey Tom and Iz. That was a great twist for a vlog and I’m sure an unusual experience for you both. As always though, very entertaining great to see you both again! (It Seems like I know you……!!?!! How weird is that???) anyway, the only comment I wanted to make is, when you’re both referring to your thoughts and thinking, try sometimes, at different times, to have no thoughts. Much easier said than done. Being in nature however and with your style of life for now, you might find it more accessible. Just a (aarrgghhh!) thought….. ET says we are addicted to thinking. A slave to our thinking mind. But there is space and we can all get there sometimes. And it’s a liberation from all the fear, worry, upset and emotion that our mind creates. Good to see you’ve kicked the “vid” Tom and lovely to see bubbly Iz bubbling away. Thank you again for your efforts from me and from all of us subscribers! Look after yourselves and safe travels! Barry 😉

You seem really addicted to the phones but well done without them! See your parents lived happy and full lives without them. As for the waterfall there is a lovely cable car that takes you up the mountain and then 1 hour walk to the waterfall. You can then walk all the way back down to the valley. You are in the "Lake District" of Romania and that is their "Aira Force" waterfall so always busy. The train ride is great and the gorge is amazing the mountains rise to 2000+ metres. The hour break just feels so quick when you are there. Lastly never take a minor road in Romania, Tom's experience is the rule and not the exception.

Soo glad you're ok... and isn't it a mad world where just because you didn't post anything for a week I feared the worst for you! I think that alone proves your point! So peaceful on that hill, and so tragic that on the other side of the border it's a different world. Some of the churches look like Norwegian stave churches 👍 That train ride looked fantastic 😊 Poor LaBamba just needed a rest on that hill! Well done on completing your challenge! That was a BRILLIANT video !!!

What a thought provoking video. I take a lot of train journeys for work and was wasting so much time listlessly scrolling on my phone and knew I had to stop. Once on the train and ticket checked I turn it off completely for three hours. So much more fun to returning to read, do some work, day dream and look out at the scenery. I also took all the apps like bbc news and sport etc and left only essential things like train tickets apps etc…so so so much better and so little screen time now. LoveLy to see you both…and doesn’t Romania look amazing!

Just fantastic to watch thirty odd minutes of the really nice thought provoking video you've posted. All the comments rightly reflect everyone's enjoyment of your latest(overdue,I might add🙂) Vlog. Been to Romania once and agree entirely, it's a lovely country.. Great to see La Bamba being the stalwart she is getting you both safely along on your trip. Looking forward to the next Vlog already...👏👏☘🚐

The scale of that map! I traveled to a camp place with 2 grandchildren in West Virginia. Well silly me did not think we would ever not be connected for Google Maps. Then it happened. I ended up turning back 85 miles to a tourist place and the only map they had was similiar to the one you have. It was a placement. We had about another 100 miles to go. So the following year I got with AAA and had a trip map done! What an experience. The cemetary was amazing with the carvings. Isabelle I too love the one with the lady and children. Amazing travels.

Always have a detailed MAP (paper) for the places you go (they are very useful, and they are a THING lol) also have a compass (they are also useful), this is kinda how we did it back in the day (well in the 70s 80s and 90s lol), map reading (am sure your both proficient) is a old skill which has been lost in most part these days 🙂 Massive well done though for ya 100 hours, not easy but a great dopamine detox. Fair play for trying to drive in Romania without maps/satnav, I work for a mapping company and Romania and Moldova are very much behind the rest of Europe when it comes to roads. It's due to their history, especially in Romania the previous dictator leadership wanted main roads to go through towns, so there is very little bypasses or city to city motorways. The quality is generally horrible too! Hope la bamba survived okay! X

Isabel, I totally understand the fear of not being able to receive emergency news from home. One thing that might work for that situation (if you ever decide to repeat the detox) is to leave your phone on solely for the purpose of receiving a phone call. You can even put your phone on Do Not Disturb and input your family’s numbers as exceptions so that they can get through but no one else’s can. Then let your family know that is the only way to reach you in an emergency.

You’ll never do that experiment again. I remember going on trips, meeting up with people on the way, in the middle of nowhere, long before smart phones, laptops and GPS. I don’t remember how we did it, but we did. So it must be possible right? :)

This is how life used to be before smart phones took over. Perhaps we should all ditch our phones and go back to how it was?
