After 10 years in a van I could easily talk for days on end about my experiences, thoughts and feelings on vanlife and I could definitely go into further depth on the topics in this video especially my WHY and how it’s changed me but as it is it’s a long video. As for the things I don’t like about vanlife… my opinions aren’t a moral judgement upon others, they’re just my opinions on how things have changed. Anyways, thanks for joining me on this journey the past couple years here on KZread and I’ll see ya soon with another video.

OMG I agree with EVERYTHING you said at the end.... I've been fulltime for almost 5 years, I'm in an old green low top van, I choose to live in the back country. Everything you just said is what I have experienced in the past couple of weeks... seeing these meetups that ppl are charging for to all stay at one group campsite and the ppl hosting are major part timers that don't understand the REAL challenges of fulltime vanlifing and their making thousands on the meetups. Living in the forests and on the land isnt new to me, I grew up on a 100acre horse farm and grew up working on tobacco farms/tomato farms, camping, hunting, and I can do most mechanical fixes on truck engines etc etc. Living the backcountry is essential for me, I am an empath and Reiki Healer, when I am in cities and towns, the electromagnetic/radio waves in the air, loud people, traffic negatively effect my body and emotional state..... For my health and sanity, living in the back country with just my doggies is the only way I can live...... Sending you and Frank Love and Light from our green rig to yours 🙂

Amanda,,,,, You are a very amazing woman!!! This was the first video I have watched of yours, and I have just subscribed to you and Frank. I LOVE the life that you two enjoy together and I have much admiration for the love you obviously have for Frank. He loved his new toy you gave him and I could see and here him playing with it all the way to the end of the video. He is a very lucky dog to have you. You really impressed me on overcoming problems and obstacles on your life and living a life, for 10 years, that you and Frank enjoy together, that you both love and the peace you have is obvious and something I covet for myself. I've been seriously contemplating doing exactly like you are, for about six months. Every day I probably watch 10 to 20 videos made by van lifers. I am SO glad I found you today. I am divorced (4 times, so marriage obviously does not work for me) and I'm just not happy with my life. I retired at a young age in 2000. I have tried several ventures, but none gave me the joy that I expected. Over the years I have owned several campers and RVs and loved the occasional outing. In 2017 hurricane Harvey destroyed my house south of Houston, near the Texas Gulf Coast, my last wife left when we saw we had lost literally everything, except what we had evacuated with - which was not much. I bought a big RV then and set it up on my rural property and lived in it alone, with my dog and cat, until July 2021. I decided to sell the place, including the RV, even though I lived living in it, and buy a small house, which I did. I LOVE my small house and the 4 city lots it is on, but I hate this town, the weather here and thus state I mived to in September, 2021. I want to sell it and do exactly as you are doing. THAT would give me peace and happiness, just like you have. Like you mentioned, I want to buy a rural property to have as like a home base. I am on the verge of becoming an old man. I do not want to spend the rest of my life, running the rat race, keeping up with the Joneses. I want to be happy again - like you. I want to enjoy life again - like you. My daughter died in 2014, I am the last one left in my once big family. When I die, I want to die happy, peaceful and content. I want to become like you. So I will go back and watch - and learn, from all your videos. God bless you Amanda!!!

I've been living the van life over 30 years I grew up on the streets as a teenager I was taken from my mother as a child I was tossed around from foster home to foster home until I was adopted at the age of eight by a mother who hated my guts even to this day.. to this day I live in a bus conversion down by the river.. I do like the idea that it has become popular and acceptable because now the threat of being arrested because you sleep in your van is not as great. There is strength in numbers.. I get what you're saying on every aspect.. thanks for all the great video.

The photos of you climbing big rocks are so beautiful! You’ve had some incredible experiences and built some incredible skill and resilience! I’m so glad you’re sharing your story to give the perspective of someone who didn’t come to vanlife from a place of affluence. Choosing to unapologetically and radically take care of yourself is a road much less travelled, it’s not the easiest and not as glamorous as the internet has made it out to be. Gentrification is a problem everywhere, and nature is suffering! If everyone had the same respect, it might be a different story. Thanks for your honest transparency ❤

@@angelfujiyoshi6937while I don't agree with gatekeeping or saying that just cause you have money means you shouldn't live in a van, with vanlife the way you live absolutely affects others. If you do not know how to camp properly, if you're leaving trash, being disruptive, all of those things actively harm not only locations but also people's perceptions of van life in general. You share the world with other van lifers and keeping that in mind and being respectful is the best minimum you can do

Good story! After 12 years of taking care of my mother, I transitioned from a house to 24' tt and hightop cargo van. I now live along a beautiful creek hanging out with my dog, cats, raccoons, a fox, birds, deer, etc. 🦌 It's totally different. Still trying to figure things out. Eight winters w/o heat in the Pacific northwest?? Omg. In CA, I am plugged in and I run two electric heaters most of the time. Your dog might benefit from heat for his arthritis no? He is adorable. You take great care of him. I have heated beds for my dog Red and my cats. Anyway...

I get how hard it must be for you OGs to see all the beautiful, secret campsites overrun because of the apps like ioverlander. And seeing people trash and damage these campsites is so hard to deal with emotionally. I hope you get to have your piece of land someday and enjoy the privacy and autonomy that can bring. You mentioned the injury on Frank's foot. I know his health and happiness are your priority and that this situation takes a toll emotionally. I've had the honor of loving so many good dogs, and it's so hard to see them declining. When Lily got cancer, I was able to get good medical treatment and give her the best life while she could enjoy it. Toward the end, I realized that I needed to be vigilant and make sure I gave her a peaceful death before she experienced a crisis. I succeeded in that, but it broke my fking heart to do it. With the perspective that time brings, I feel good about doing the merciful thing and hope that I can receive that same mercy when my time comes. For today, I hope you're feeling well and staying cozy and that Frank is happy and content.

There is still some joy in that those of us that genuinely enjoy reading maps can still find isolated pristine wilderness, often not too far from town when you need to be nearby, but I have definitely left those iOverlander sites behind. People want to call it gatekeeping or snooty but the simple reality is that the more people that know about a spot, the greater the likelihood that space will end up trashed or closed as you’ve stated.

  • @schmonsequences
    @schmonsequences5 ай бұрын

We need a network of landowners/vanlifers who can share their space and community with similarly minded people. I've come to realize that without upgrading to a serious overland rig I'm not going to find temperate semi private summer spots anymore. Winter is fine because the desert is vast, but summer has become too crowded (in the US, Colorado specifically). And totally agree on the ioverlander critique. If you find a good spot just keep it to yourself.

You go girl! Do your own thing and stick to your guns. I'm 2 1/2 years in, living in my car, saving to buy a short bus this summer. Living in my car has been really challenging, but honestly, I love the freedom and don't want to live in a stick and brick until I'm forced to. I work full time as a property manager for a co-op and see it all, from the struggling tenants to the self-entitled, and the more I see of it, the more I just shake my head. No one there knows I live in my car and I want to keep it that way, I don't need nor want their "pity". At the end of the work day, I can't wait to get in my car, go find a spot to park and just decompress, knowing I've left all the problems of living in a stick and brick with the people who live in them. (And boy, are there ever a lot of problems!!) I feel sorry for them sometimes. I can't wait to get my bus and hit the road!!! Anyway, I just wanted to say how much I admire your honesty and tenaciousness. I love that you didn't give up on Frank just because he's old and you've found ways to make his life comfortable. I'm headed out west sometime soon, currently in Northern Ontario, perhaps we'll bump into each other. See ya down the road!

Some people just want to go through doors and slam them shut for everyone else. Like leaving trash, like treating business parking lots as if they are entitled to be there (instead of guests), like snatching up vans. And don't get me started about landlords. The large private equity firms in the real estate business have done the same to housing as the van flippers. Made it something only the chronically stressed delusional middle class can (barely) afford. I've watched 'decent' people at a buffet taking way more food than they need and throwing it out, or even worse, mucking up the food on the table so no one else will want any. Hard to understand why there is so much of that behaviour around.

So much of this video resonates with me and my soul. I lived 3.5 years in my self converted bus. I spent 3 months traveling full time in a TINY van. I am currently in a sticks and bricks and my mental health definitely struggles because of it. My number one goal at this point, is to be back in an alternative living life. I have a plan and working it daily. As for other “van lifers” it is a catch 22 because sharing your van life on YT is what seems to make your lifestyle possible for you and yet that is actually why so many people know it is an option. We have learned it from YT and IG. And unfortunately the current world economy and unobtainable financial living requirements is pushing people out of their homes everywhere. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and I so enjoy your channel.

Amanda, the stuff you bring up that you dislike are VERY valid. For now, I'm living sticks and bricks in my parents basement after 40 years of living on my own, pay check to pay check. It is getting harder and harder to make ends meet on a single minimum wage life, re: moving from where I lived to now in a basement with the parents. Watching you and other Canadian youtubers has taught me many things, I already know how to make do and to leave no trace. I enjoy the out doors in my own way. I have a dodge caravan that I use for my " camping road trips" that when I retire will become my home.(parents are elderly, not sure of their expiry date) so need to be prepared for my own life and style. And on that note I return to what you don't like about van life, Will it still be there for me in 3 to 5 years? Or will it be so abused, that there are to many bylaws that make it even harder on those who have no other back up except extreme poverty in a sticks and bricks. I am blessed to see you live your best life, and frank having his best life too with you, and for you to share your knowledge and experiences both good and bad. All I can say is thank you the the help from others who got you started years ago and where it has brought you today. Keep the Faith and carry on.

I love this video! You summed up perfectly what happens when yuppification gets into a movement or lifestyle. It gets ruined by fakers and posers. I’ve been into reuse/recycling and crafting since the 70s, mostly out of necessity, as I was a single parent. People like me took it very seriously and didn’t treat as something to entertain us until the next big “thing” came along. It sounds like a great idea that more people would get involved in flipping but it isn’t. They turned it into a fad and thrift shops became boutiques; a fifty-dollar dresser is now a three hundred dollar “vintage piece.” The people that truly need the thrift shops are rapidly being pushed out of even Goodwill. Anyway, you and Flossy and all of the other real people will always have my support! Keep up the great videos- I look forward to each new adventure with you and Frank ❤

Really appreciated these observtaions. I've been following vanlifers for at least 4 years, but probably longer. I tried a long road trip in 2022 (4 months away from home) and enjoyed it, and hoped to step into vanlife in my own future. But I've seen how hard it has become for local vanlifers to make their way - cities and neighborhoods have become hostile as the community has changed. I come to your channel for whatever you wish to share. I love learning about foraging, seeing where you walk and hike, and seeing the loving relationship you have with Frank. Thank you!

I commend you on your competence in managing a Heeler so well. The breed is challenging, and requires a lot of dog sense and a lot of vigilance to make sure they're not a risk to others. Their "one person" nature, and tendancy to being very territorial, makes them an excellent guard dog - but one which is more independent-minded than a GSD. You did good 👍 Sorry the old guy is less mobile, but looks like he's still enjoying life plenty!

I loved this video. I watch ad many van builds as possible. When I find a fancy professional looking one I move on. Not because they are not beautiful, they are. I just prefer the “homemade “ ones to appreciate people’s creativity and solutions to problems. Also, you and Frank are beautiful. Thanks for all you do.

You are so refreshing! I want to add that the increase in high end van life makes sense to me. Inflation has vastly outpaced incomes for a long time. Rents and home prices have doubled in my area the past 5 years. So people decide to spend the house downpayment savings on a nice van or RV. Even if they prefer the apartment, it might not exist in their price range. The NY Times just wrote that Jackson (Hole) Wyoming has a high number of workers with decent jobs living in cars and RVs from a lack of housing, because why rent to a teacher when you can make many times that amount as a vacation rental? So the teacher, chef, grocery store manager buys a nice new camper that their Subaru can pull.

You can't. It's good that you've put yourself first. I hope you are always able to find a safe place to sleep. God bless you and Frank! He was so funny at the end of this video!😂❤❤

There should be way bigger fines. Wish more people had respect for eachother. You're so correct with housing prices, it's so ridiculous & sad! Sending positive vibes 🙏 & hugs your way.

What a wonderful and honestly shared video. I absolutely loved it. You covered so many important points and issues. As you know, you are my girl Badass shero 😊 Why, because you were courageous enough to step into life and follow your path. I'm sure it wasn't always easy either. And it's remarkable to me, that Frank has been on this entire journey. I started planning my van life journey 8ish yrs ago. And I really thought for the first time, i could live for me (kids & grankids were grown). But life had other plans 🤷🏼‍♀️ I appreciated your candid comments on the nature of the Mega "van" people. I can't relate to most, so I don't. You, Simon and a couple others are who I am drawn to. Even super popular VLers are not my interest. I truly hope the day comes when you get your spot, piece of land to create a homebase. One quick funny story, my grandson is going to college in Colorado and started climbing. In fact, he got a job at a climbing center. So at Christmas🎄 I said, "so your becoming a dirtbag" everyone was a bit surprised, didn't believe that that's what climbers are called. They looked it up and saw it's true. I told him maybe he needs to head out in my van for some adventures when he comes back for summer break. 😅 Anyway, I'm re-watching your video. Sending my precious Frank much love, hugs and healthy thoughts ❤️ And to you as well. 🎉 Congratulations 🎊 on 10 yrs

First time I’ve seen any of your videos, Amanda. A couple of things… People helped you because you helped yourself. You did not allow yourself to be a helpless victim. I’m sure it was very difficult but by you persevering, it appears you become a very resilient healthy human. I understand being frustrated by the people who call themselves “Van lifers“ when they’re truly just camping. I built my own home and lived in a travel trailer for four years. I wore the nail bags drew the design, everything. It calls me when people say they built their house when in actuality, they PAID people to build their house. these are small annoyances, but I get it. I also get the gentrification aspect of Vanlife. I live in high impact high-end tourist area on the northern California coast. I see these half $1 million-$1 million vans every day all day all year long. They overcrowd our little village. They impact our parks with trash and trampling native plants and harass wildlife. They drain our emergency services by falling off cliffs, and not understanding ocean safety. But that’s life. I’m almost 70 and although we have saved for retirement, it’s unlikely I’ll be in a position alone to continue to live where I am. I have followed Van for many many years, because I always felt like it was a possible alternative. it does not look like an easy lifestyle. It looks difficult and challenging in so many ways. But in the end as you said Amanda, you learn about yourself. You learn about how resilient and strong you really are. You learn that you are a courageous human. I bought a Fred sticker and will think about you too when my power goes out and I’m cold and I’m sheltered in a home with much more certainty than you have experienced in your 10+ years on the road.💜

Thanks for the great video. You are wise beyond your years. It took me until I was 56 to take back my power, quit my job & start full time travel. My spiritually has skyrocketed as a result of living my life the way I want to live it. Oct 30, 2023 was my 9 year anniversary of full time (solo) world travel. I wouldn't trade the last 9+ years for any job, property, relationship or, business opportunity. Full time van life is still on my radar, I'm just not sure how I'll work that in. Cheers to another 10 years of whatever life you choose & for me, I never have plans anymore...I just go where my path takes me. Happy trails beautiful human...

Happy Vanniversary Amanda & Frank 🥳 I’m coming up to 3 years fulltime in my van and travel with my dog whose about to turn 1. We love your channel because it does get back to the basics of vanlife. We are in Australia so the heat & summers are our biggest challenges but I love your winter content the scenery is stunning and all the spectacular lakeside camp ups. I built my own van out at age 48 so no spring chicken and watched my fair share of van tours and builds and can’t stand these professional van builds with all the mod cons (they have no character or the personalities behind them) and if I ever see a van with white interiors I stop watching 😂 Thanks for sharing your life and big cuddles Frank from Australia 🇦🇺
