Had that happen in an Indy promotion I was working for as the ring annoucner. Three way match, champion was supposed to retain but didn't kick out of a pin. So, we rung the bell. The guy who won was hella confused and the ref asked me, the ring announcer, what to do. I said, "You counted to three, right?" Ref said, "Yeah, but that wasn't supposed to be the finish." I said again, "You counted to three?" Ref said, "Yeah." I got on the mic, and announced the winner and new Champion. Dude that won actually ended up holding the title for quite a few months, even defeating the former champ in a rematch. Guess the former champ should've kicked out, huh?

The ending of this reminds me of when The Rock pinned Booker T at SummerSlam. Booker T forgot to kick out and Rock had to do the kickout for him by jumping into the air for no reason to prevent the 3-count. It's a hilariously awkward moment, but shows how professional The Rock was.

Oh yeah he did, but he still left it too late for the unprepared ref to stop his hand in time. Kicking out at 2.99999 should be saved for WrestleMania main events, that's what he gets for being a prima donna and trying to do it in a normal match.

One thing that doesn't get mentioned about the Wrestlemania 2000 match is that the finish was botched so badly that they even screwed up the MUSIC to it. When Hardcore is announced as the winner, they play the music for the Hardy Boyz by mistake. A botch made doubly stupid because Crash and Hardcore both had the exact same theme song at the time, so either way it would have been wrong!

My personal favorite was in New Japan Pro Wrestling, where Hiroyoshi Tenzan accidentally defeated Yuji Nagata in the semifinals of a tournament for the IWGP title after legit knocking him out... A tournament Nagata was supposed to win. Instead, Tenzan got the win over Tenryu in the finals and became the new champ. He wasn't champ long though, as he lost the belt to Kensuke Sasaki a month later. While we're on the subject of title changes at house shows, a personal favorite of mine is Men on a Mission facing tag Champs the Quebecers in London. Pierre got knocked out by a splash from Mabel and couldn't kick out, and we have new Champs! The title reign was short lived and the belts were swapped back to the Quebecers two days later, and of note this was their only tag title reign.

Kelly Klein was apparently meant to be the first champion, but there was a miscommunication and Sumie Sakai accidentaly won. Also, Toni Storm accidentally won the World of Stardom Championship, but that one's not very funny since the reason she won was that her opponent (Mayu Iwatani) got injured during the match.

What's so weird about wrestlers accidentally winning matches, especially Championship Triple Threat matches, is sometimes one person will pin the other person who isn't champion and their reign is counted like Mickie in 2007, and other times it's retconned, like AJ Lee winning the Divas Championship in 2012. It might be because these matches happened at house shows.

Mabel and Mo accidently won the WWF tag titles in 1994 while on a tour of England. Mabel fell on top of Pierre of the Quebecers and Pierre couldn't kick out and so Mabel and Mo held the titles for 2 days before dropping it back to the Quebecers.

I went to a WWE house show in Cardiff in 2005 that had a Cruiserweight Battle Royal as the opener between Paul London, Chavo, Kidman, Spike Dudley, Nunzio and Scotty 2 Hotty. There was a botched spot where London slipped during a near-elimination, leaving Chavo and Kidman alone in the ring. Realising that this would have meant a new Cruiserweight Champ, they looked at each other briefly and did a Bret/Luger spot, eliminating each other simultaenously. Almost immediately (and no doubt unplanned) Teddy Long is dragged out to the entranceway and he restarts the match, with Kidman, Chavo AND London, and London wins the match in short order, retaining the title. First time I've been in attendance for a botched finish.

Not exactly. The wins weren't the problem, it was the booking before the matches that was. And technically the only one who SHOULD have won over Triple H around that timeframe was Booker T, because the booking almost demanded it. Everything else made sense if you look at it objectively.

My trainer Tito use to wrestle for Mcmahon Senior back when it was the WWWF. He "accidentally" ended up winning a title match when his opponent got legit knocked out. They had him drop the belt back either that night or the night after, can't remember which. He was technically one of, if not the the first Mexican born champion in the business. R.I.P old man.

  • @Seriously_Unserious

Unfortunately for Nexus, they were put into that feud when Cena was in his Big Match John mode and nobody was allowed to beat him clean, and all who feuded with him were doomed to eventually get buried. I have to admit, I liked Cena better when he was in his rapper gimmick, he was way more entertaining back then. Then he went to his cleancut gimmick shortly after his first movie, the Marine, and just got stuck there, never changing a thing for the rest of his WWE career. The exact opposite of Chris Jericho, who seems to reinvent himself with shades of his old personas every time a persona is starting to get a little bit stale.
