The Unforgivable’s twist was actually amazing because it was the last thing I expected to have happened. I mean they purposely made her seem unhinged when she was snapping at everybody on the phone and then she cane out of the house with her little sister screaming in her arms pointing a gun at people. Disagree with Ikaris being on here. I saw it as Ikaris couldn’t live with either killing Sersi or betraying Arishem which would create conflict so he remembered Sprite creating stories that include him flying into the sun and gave him an ‘out’. Plus being on Twitter many thought it would be Druig to be the villain so Ikaris being the villain actually did pull a punch.

Same feels on this one. It felt like he was a puppet on strings, he possibly made a deal with his creator (it may not be established that he couldn't) but to save the others, he probably took a pact unbeknownst to be a puppet causing death and destruction, betrayal, and possibly the end of existence. The turn around being, he had to become something he dispised. Aside from the creatures evolving, being one of the Eternals does not come without risk or sacrifice, even for the greater good. Plus what we learn later, everything falls apart within all of them. But a chance to help save humanity, his flight to the sun saves others from a worse fate that he brought unwillingly. Also Arishem is known to manipulate and control within the cosmic universe. Making his creations puppets is not out of the question. Free will is a gift. Until broken.

A good twist is one where, when it's first revealed, the viewer thinks, "OMG, never saw that coming," and then, on a second viewing, "Oh, so THAT'S why that happened. It all makes sense now." See 'The Prestige' for a perfect example. A poor twist comes so completely out of left field that, not only does it not make sense at the time, but when you rematch the movie, it STILL doesn't make sense. See 'Fight Club', or anything by M Night Sham that isn't 'The 6th Sense'.

I don't think plot twists need to always be surprising and unexpected. Yes, it's great when a plot twist catches you off-ward and you can see the threads pointing in that direction in hindsight. But a plot twist you can see coming because the author laid it out for you can also be satisfying, in the sense that you're waiting for it. Ofc this all assumes that they are properly written, it just bothers me that people say a plot twist is bad only because they saw it coming.

I don’t know why so many people think Ikaris died at the end of Eternals. He’s a being of cosmic power, after all. If Thor could survive the creation of Stormbreaker (reigniting a dead star), it’s possible Ikaris is still alive.

I think they killed this iteration of him. In the next movie (if it ever happens...) they will find a fresh version of him in the place they are built / reformatted. The whole "love transcends our memories" stuff they hinted at through the movie. Think this was the setup to a later payoff in that direction. But we will see. You could be right too.

Here’s a fun question: what would you say is worse, a plot twist that was immediately obvious from the start and you could see coming a mile away...yet acts like it’s some huge shocking unexpected reveal, or a plot twist that comes out of nowhere and makes little to no sense in the concept of the narrative

So here's a late additional twist: My professor was actually good friends with the director and producer of The Virtuoso, so we got to meet with him and discuss the film. The real twist is that Anthony Hopkins wasn't actually his first pick for the role. He knew he wanted someone LIKE Hopkins (old, respected, dignified, etc.), but it was a complete coincidence and a big "friend of a friend of a friend" scenario that he managed to secure Hopkins

The movie Awake was very weird, it felt like an unfinished film, incomplete with keys scenes to explain the overall story missing. Like the solar flare or whatever happens, then the next few scenes are already people seemingly ok with no one being able to sleep, then a couple of days people just suddenly turn crazy... It was badly directed

For The Virtuose, I don't think Hopkins being the bad guy was supposed to be a twist, the moral of the story was for the Protag to overcome his own fears/failures and move on. He does so at the end, but is still killed. Now the new girl who killed him will have to go through the same journey with Hopkins (the one who failed to overcome).
