In the 1997 disaster film "Dante's Peak," the 1987 Chevy Suburban plays a vital role as the reliable vehicle of choice for the protagonist, volcanologist Harry Dalton. As Harry navigates the treacherous terrain of the eponymous volcanic peak, the Suburban becomes a symbol of resilience and adaptability, perfectly embodying its rugged reputation. With its robust build and spacious interior, the Suburban serves as both transportation and sanctuary amidst the chaos of impending disaster. As Harry and his team race against time to warn the town of the impending eruption, the Suburban's dependable performance underscores its significance as a lifeline in the face of nature's fury. Throughout the film, the 1987 Chevy Suburban emerges as more than just a mode of transport, but as a steadfast companion in the fight for survival.

    The movie that united James Bond with Sarah Connor! As mentioned, there were bigger disaster movies at the time, but Dante's Peak has aged well. And the customised Surburban was cool.

    I remember my grandfather had a 1988 V10 GMC Sierra with a fuel-injected 454. Which, according to him, was the first model year that GM offered throttle body fuel injection for those models. Kind of surprising since by that time most of GM’s competitors had already made the switch from carburetors to electronic fuel injection.

    Very cool video and great faxs about the Chevy Suburban from movie Dante's Peak . I do have a question about the Snorkel and were does it hook up to the engine? ?.

  • @CarStarz42

    @CarStarz42

    5 ай бұрын

    Thanks. Snorkels are really nothing more than a long sealed intake duct, so it hooks up to the top of the throttle body just like regular air cleaner would, but with better sealing to make sure no water would enter in. The main problem being that one has to cut a hole through the fender and then of course the tall intake tube can be a bit of a blind spot too. Some more extreme rigs will even raise up the exhaust system's rear outlets as well.

How I wish I'd known how expensive square Suburbans would get, I'd have kept it forever instead of trading it for a car in like 2005 when I couldn't afford to drive it. The C/K series didn't end in 1987 but continued on with the new body style pickups. GM would continue to manufacturer the square body under the R/V designation (fleet sales for 3/4 ton and 1 ton) while the new body was officially re-badged C/K x500. While no longer used by GM, some states still classify GM trucks by the C/K designation. For example, my 2013 Sierra is registered as a GMC K1500 as the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles continues to use C/K as a simple 2wd/4wd designator. Also worth noting Silverado and Sierra were names for trim package designators prior to 1998 thus a 1991 Silverado 2500 4x4 didn't exist because it was a 1991 V2500 in the Silverado trim.

    A friend had a 1984 Chevy Blazer 305 ci automatic , with a lift kit and big tires, when he first got it ,the local 4wd club people pretty much laughed at it, according to them it was too big , and being automatic was not suitable, etc, etc. The attitude was that it would be inferior to their Land Rovers, Toyotas, etc. It turned out that it proved to be far superior , and went everywhere they did , but faster and more surefooted , he towed plenty of them out of bad situations.

    Of course they had stock engines. Movie & TV vehicles don't have to actually go fast, they mostly just have to look like they're going fast and that's usually down to the camera work. Reliability is far more important because you don't want an entire movie crew standing around tapping their feet waiting on you.
