Bellingham wore the number 22 at Birmingham City and at Dortmund but he dropped it to pick up the number 5 when he joined Real Madrid. The reason is simple, because he wanted to pay homage to his hero Zinedine Zidane who also wore the number 5 for Real Madrid.
Speaking of 22, that’s the number Ilkay Gundogan currently wears at Barcelona, and it wasn’t just a random selection. The treble-winning captain explained that he picked the number as a tribute to his time at FC Nuremberg. Over there, he wore the number 22 between 2008 and 2011. He dropped it after he moved to Dortmund, first wearing 21 before then switching to the number 8 which he had behind his back for 12 years before he joined Barcelona.
Meanwhile, his teammate Frenkie de Jong has an even more emotional story behind his kit number. The Dutch midfielder is known for the number 21 which he has worn since he was at Ajax
Another top midfielder synonymous with the number 21 is Andrea Pirlo, and his story has something to do with family, too. The Italian legend proclaimed that 21 is his favorite number for a couple of reasons; his dad was born on the 21st, he got married on the 21st, and he also made his Serie A debut on the 21st.

Honorable Mentions: 1.Hicham Zerouali (former Aberdeen players): The only footballer to use 0 as a number. He chose this because he was referred by many fans as "Zero", hence the name of number. 2.Tommy Oar (Socceroos players): The only footballer to use 3-digits of number during the international games. When Australia played against Indonesia in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, Oar used 121 as his shirt number. There is a unique rule made by AFC at that time, where each players must keep their squad numbers throughout the qualification round, resulting in some players wearing a different numbers. 3.Vitor Baia (former Porto goalkeepers): During his reign with Porto, Baia chose 99. He even became the only players to wear this weird number when Porto won the Champions League in 2004. 4.In the past, there were 3 Milan players that used shirt number to reflect their birthyears, aside from Donarumma: Andriy Shevchenko (76), Ronaldinho (80), and Mathieu Flamini (84). All three were played for Milan together in 2008/09 season. 5.Guillermo Ochoa (Mexican goalkeeper): With Standard Liege, he chose 8, as his name bears the similar meanings ("ocho" is Spanish for 8). With Club America, on his second stint, he chose 6 (the original 13 shirt was taken by Leonel López) to reflect with the birth date of his niece and the date when he was signed for the club. 6.Gary Hooper (88) and Victor Wanyama (67): Both Celtic players used that numbers to reflect Celtic's important years (the club was born in 1888 and won the European Cup in 1967). Hooper was also born in 1988.
