    Also this crazy fashion of big rims and low profile tyres on 4wd’s. People don’t seem to realise that a low profile tyre at 18 psi doesn’t have any where near the same footprint as a high profile tyre at 18 psi in the same diameter.

    Very good video, I agree and I see so many people get stuck near my home because they have no idea on how to drive in snow. Also believe that those that claim to never get stuck do not drive off pavement or are just lieing. We all get stuck now and then, but experienced people know how to get home safely, IE recovery.

    The car with the burnout marks below usually denotes ESC (Electronic Stability Control) not BTC (Brake Traction Control). You want BTC on for off-road, but want ESC off for low range work. Also high range were it might be a little scrappy, like a beach exit. ESC will see you a little sideways, cut throttle and apply brake.

    Was there a week ago, you can access the beach through the Nora Creina village, just close the gate after you drive in and respect the locals while driving through. Some dune tracks are really narrow so I hope you don’t value your paint job too much... Also most of the tracks through the dunes don’t really go anywhere so always remember where you came from (found that out the hard way 😅) besides that you gonna have a blast! Heaps of tracks and steep dunes and the sand can get pretty soft, hope your going with a mate, much more fun and it’s always good to have an extra vehicle. I was there alone but had my max tracks which got me out of a few sticky situations (wouldn’t go without) Enjoy mate, I had a blast!!!

    Jasmeet Mohi should be all good mate, just make sure you got enough water and fuel and keep in mind when you go down a steep hill you might have to get back up if the track doesn’t lead anywhere, that’s what happened to me 😂 I spend the whole day there and didn’t see one person just so you know, you might be on your own if something goes wrong, also watch out for the tide or you might be stuck there for awhile 😅 anyways just have fun and smash those dunes! I had heaps of fun there! You go for the adventure anyways so a bit of trouble is all part of it and makes the stories even better!

    Drop your tyres further than you think (12 psi or thereabouts) & contrary to what you may think, stay away from the water on the softer beaches as the sand consistency changes beach to beach from hard packed to deep powder & you tend to sink more closer to the water on the soft ones. There's epic camping spots between Nora Creina & Beachport in the dunes once you head in so you'll have a blast.

    Some vehicles "traction control" has three modes instead of 2. My Grand Cherokee WK, or WH, has a press of the "electronic stability control" with is only partially off but has the light on in dash. A long hold of the same button actually turns it off. Locking the center diff also turns it off, but that's only 4 low.

    As a mechanical engineer I would like to mention that a locked differential does not mean a 50/50 power split, nor a 50/50 torque split. All it does is lock the rotational speeds of both outputs. Please keep that in mind when you're preparing the full 4wd systems explanation. 🙂

  • @RainBoxRed

    @RainBoxRed

    5 жыл бұрын

    Very common mistake, and very counter intuitive. Not here to disagree, because you are 0/100 correct, and in fact it is an open diff that sends 50/50 torque to each wheel.

  • @petittoto7433

    @petittoto7433

    5 жыл бұрын

    I would just add that : the power is the force multiplied by the speed (or the torque by the rotation speed). If both wheels of a axle turn without resistance (slip) there is no torque (at constant speed...) coming from the central diff and therefore no power. Another mechanical engineer. :-)

    for the past 20 ish years in north america AWD 👉computer engages the frt diff then reads signals from speed sensors to engage or disengage the transfer case based on front to rear wheel slip 4WD locks the transfer case in either 4WH or 4WL depending on what the driver selects and eliminates the computer from the equation FYI....🤷‍♂️

    @@oneglimmer AWD = power sent to all 4 wheels but not with an even split between front axle and rear axle. 4WD (locked centre diff) = power sent to all 4 wheels but with an even split between front and rear axle Part-time 4WD = power can be sent to rear axle only (LC 70s) Example: The LandCruiser Prado's have are AWD until you lock the centre diff. Then they are in 4WD. AWD just describes the capability to send power to all wheels, although many soft-roader AWDs are actually only sending power to all four wheels when they detect uneven terrain etc. 4WD-labelled vehicles have a diff lock.

  • @JeremyPetho

    @JeremyPetho

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@oneglimmer There is a difference between full-time 4WD and AWD, even though the terms have sometimes been interchanged and some systems are not clearly one or the other. The currently accepted terms (particularly in the 4WD community) are that full-time 4WD has a centre diff lock and AWD does not, but can use other traction devices instead. I can see why you are confused if you have been a mechanic for 30 years because the definitions have changed over time, and the term AWD is relatively recent. AWD vehicles used to be called full-time 4WD, but now that term is usually reserved for systems with a centre diff lock.

    I have a Mitsubishi Outlander (SUV), and it's an AWD vehicle. I have not had any problem in the sand with that vehicle once the selector knob is in the "Lock" position. However, it sort of snake walks through the sand by what feels like it's driving the opposite corners of the car. That's with the ESC and TC turned off with the tyre pressure lowered. The wife says going in the sand in the Outlander makes her feel seasick. By comparison, my Z71 being a 4x4 ute ploughs through the sand straight as an arrow in 4H or 4L. If in 4H, you have to manually turn of TC however, which is fair enough as you could potentially be on a dirt road for all the car knows. The car is smart enough to disengage TC in 4L. Wife approves the Colorado's 4x4 stability. As Ronny says, know your vehicle and practice! Best of all, be safe and have fun doing it.

    Ronny quick question ... Did my first soft sand trial without removing air . So I am in a Mitsubishi Montero Sport on 4WD Lo . Cruising in 1st gear ... When I pressed the clutch to put in 2nd the car stopped as if I was towing something heavy . Tried to start again and it was spinning with all 4 . Stopped again an started with 2nd gear LO ratio ... Not a problem ... did my beach tour and all was well ... Did not try 3rd Lo ... I stayed in 2nd Lo all the way ... Is this common with soft sand ? Again I did not remove any air ... I was running 30psi on a set of 255/70R16 BFG K02 ... also I did not have to use brakes at all . The minute I pressed the clutch the car would come to a full stop ...

    I dont agree with the generalisation of turning the TCS off. Take a Land Rover Discovery 2 as an example that TCS make it a really capable vehicle in slippery conditions where you would just sit spinning in a lesser vehicle... it all depends on whether the manufacturer has calibrated and tuned the TCS for offroad situations, they arent all equal!

    I agree Nick. Also the point of locking the center diff as soon as you go off-road. This isn't necessary, the center diff lock should only be engaged when traction is lost or you're about to lose traction. This is the case with Land Rovers that have it.

    @@sir_forsaken1857 I disagree there, on the LT230 transfer box just lock them as soon as you are on low traction surfaces. If you wait till your stuck it's too late tbh and the centre diff doesn't like wheel spinning at all. All about reading the terrain and making an educated choice.

    Land Rover, lock that centre diff as soon as you are on a low traction surface. And agreed, traction control is good, stability control bad. People get mixed up thinking the ASC switch is a TC switch...most cars don’t let you turn off TC.

    You say turn traction control off. I do NOT agree. Look at all Graham Cahill's 4WD Action videos when he is driving the D-Max, he is constantly praising the traction control. A D-Max does not have a diff lock or LSD because it does not need them, the traction control works for all four wheel and you can still steer unlike a locked front diff.

    All vehicles are different some it might be okay because it works with the 4x4 system where most it will make it worse as it will work against. Some systems still work in the background like the jeep JK but thats after you turn it off. Again every vehicle is different, every terrain is different but most cases if you are having trouble turn it off and see what happens.

    In Landrovers you must turn TC off when in sand as Ronny mentioned. All other modes are ok and sometimes great to have it on, but sand and TC are the worse IMO

    Your video said to turn TC off. Probably better to say that generally you would turn it off but it will vary depending on the vehicle. In my trip last year through the Nuytsland Nature Reserve where we ran into your tag-along tour I did not ever turn off traction control. With my D-Max If I have the right tyre pressures and have momentum, I usually have little problem in sand. On level sand there is little difference between traction control on or off. However when going uphill the traction control give more power to the back wheels where the weight is. Without traction control going uphill the front wheels spin because they have less weight on them sapping some of the power going to the back wheels which will slow you down. I have had Toyotas with diff locks front and back which are blxxdy good but for 99% of the time I would much prefer the D-Max with traction control. Where traction control really shines is that it is usually always on and you can still steer. You have to turn a front locker off if you have to turn. I stress the importance of having the right tyre pressures (low) and having reasonable momentum, because if these are not right, and you have traction control on, you will bog down causing excessive wheel spin which will reduce engine power.

    Nah what you should say is to turn STABILITY CONTROL off. Traction control is excellent offroad. Stability control is not. Lots of people use the terms interchangeably but they're not the same thing.
