If it was air in the bag the chips would go stale. It's actually nitrogen in the bag. It keeps the chips crunchy while on the shelves. My grandpa worked for Snyder's pretzel company. Sometimes he would let me join him on a work day

Oswaldo Rojas the chips also settle a lot after packaging. The company can't quickly and completely settle them without breaking them, so it uses a bag big enough to hold the chips before settling. See my reply to OP for more info

As an ex Pharmacy Technician of 4 years, I can confirm the first one to be true. Some drug companies even market the Brand name as generic and still sell it cheaper as a way to help patient costs. You're literally getting the exact medicine for like $300 less. And people still complain if their insurance doesnt cover the cost fully. But next time you have a cough, Dont buy the $12 Delsum, buy the $6 Dextromethorphan. Equate brand is literally the exact same thing just without the fancy name

About the water bottle thing, I can’t drink a lot of chlorine (which in Sanford, NC they have a lot of that in the faucet water) because it irritates my stomach and when I bathe in it it causes severe itchy skin so to prevent from drinking it...I buy bottled water. And the shower part I run in like warm to cold to reduce the chance of irritated skin.

Former Starbucks manager here-- Starbucks instructs baristas not to fill coffee cups to the top because most people need room to add cream and sugar. If their cups are too full, customers dump out excess coffee into the trash can to make room for cream. Stores would end up with trash bags full of liquid, and if one of those bags has a hole in it or breaks while being taken out, you'd end up with a stinky disgusting mess on the floor.

Whereas bottled water is a ripoff, and it does come from the city tap, it isn't quite that simple. The water is supplied from the city tap, but then it is distilled, filtered, and purified before being bottled and sold. I will never go to Starbucks, but I will defend that one. I was a manager at McDonald's. A full cup of any hot liquid is just asking to spill on the customer's hand. You cannot move the cup at all without the liquid sploshing around a little. A slightly underfilled cup gives room for the movement without spilling out and burning the employee or customer.

I was going to comment on that too. I managed a McDonald's for eleven years. Depending on the type of cup used the hot liquid can also "soften" the cup around the brim making it collapse.

The German dimple stein you showed in multiple photos is a thick glass but it's always marked at 1 liter or half liter, so regardless of how thick the glass is or what design it has, it's still the appropriate amount of beer. The tricky one is a "pint" because there's a very loose definition of what a pint is across several countries.

The UK, Australia and a few other countries also still use pints specifically for beer. But the US is notorious for giving you less than a UK pint because pint size is not regulated in the US. They could give us 20oz, 16oz, or 12oz and call each one a pint with no problem as long as it's in a "pint style" glass. In the UK a pint is always 20oz.

Cooky Comps I love my Guinness, but when I ask a bar tender for a pint, I end up with a 12 oz drink. This can be confusing as a pint in the US is 16 oz, whereas the imperial pint (British) is equal to 19 oz. We live next to a popular water bottling company. Our tap water comes from the same natural spring they bottle and ship, so we never have to buy bottled water.

I work in a Tim Horton , which is like a Canadian Starbucks and we leave 1cm of space for every hot beverage because otherwise people would burn themselves by spilling the beverage if it's too full ! Honestly, as someone who works at Starbucks I'd be more wary of the aggressive amount of ice in the iced drinks as well as the whip on the bottom of the mocha cookie and caramel ribbon frappuccinos

Starbucks is ripping you off big time then!! The prices being way too high plus being ripped off? That's crazy!! Go to Dunkin instead! I work there and IK we're not ripping you off! Filling the cups to the top! (at least at the dunkin I work at!)

I had heard that "frozen dairy product/desert" applied to ice cream with too low milk fat content because to be officially be ice cream, it had to be a certain bare minimum of milk fat.

Starbucks baristas are taught to leave 1/4 of an inch for many reasons. Some people like to put cream and sugar in their coffee, and if you fill the cups all the way up there’s a greater risk of it spilling and leaking.

Also with the Netflix thing,if you're in the UK, get a three sim with 12gb and you can watch as much Netflix as you want at no data cost

I work parttime as barista and me nd my coworker are of a fill to the brim mentality. I put as mcuh as I can in the cup for lattes. I do leave a little room for mochas and white mochas if the person wants whipped cream so the whipped cream doesn't spew like a volcano- but yeah, I believe these and it sucks. There is a fill line on the iced cups though, soooo yeah.

Get popcorn kernels and a popcorn machine and put butter on after

Starbucks also rips you off by over roasting crappy beans, and jacking up the prices by claiming they're using "premium beans". Gas station coffee uses better beans. Insider info

They have to leave space in potato chip bags. If you're shortest routes over the Rockies takes you over i70 or i80, you get paid and routed to the south to avoid possibly popping the bags in the mountains.

To everyone saying that Lays chips have bags filled with nitrogen, *yes we know.* My question is, do the chips consume or use up the nitrogen at any rapid rate? Cus, if not I still don't see why they need to fill 75% of the bags volume with nitrogen. *Scams, scmas, scams all around.*

They are filled with nitrogen because it effectively suspends the chips from Going stale.. aka no chips are not using nitrogen and that a good thing. As for people saying it’s a scam, I am 50/50 on the issue.. I think it is on such a large production scale but compared to what I seen locally...my local store makes fresh chips daily and I recently compared the weight, size and price and found even though seems cheap it’s only a few cents cheaper in the end but don’t last as long.. However their homemade salsa is best deal, they sell it in large mason jars for $5 each and super delicious and spicy. Get both chips and the spicy salsa fresh and hot together the best thing ever..

They will the bags 75% then pump in nitrogen, the chips just settle at the bottom.

The part about the toxic chemical on the inside of the bag only applies to certain brands. Orville Redenbacher's popcorn doesn't have that. Also, the FDA is considering banning the use of such chemicals and the brands that use it could face hefty fines as a result.

I once opened a freshly opened bag of chips, and my sisters came into the room to see me holding the bag. When they grabbed the bag, they got mad, saying that I ate half the bag, and they had the “rest”, making me have no chips

The air (or lack thereof) in the chip bag is also to keep the chips preserved longer and not become stale (notice how until you open the bag, the chips are still greasy and salty)

No. The air is there so the chips don't get broken so easily. The saltiness and the greasiness is there for our pleasure. And I'm so glad it is the best part of the end of a chip bag is licking my greasy salty fingers

for starbucks, i've had a guy underfill my cup, then I watched him pour the extra out down the sink

I often use plain popcorn kernels you can buy really cheap in almost any supermarket. You boil it and can flavour it as you like. Can I just say that the plumping up of chickens and other poultry has been happening for centuries.

Stovetop popcorn is soooooo much better anyway.

I work for a snack food company. Potato chips are packed by weight, with inert gases in the bag to protect against staleness. Potatoes come in various densities due to variety and growing conditions, so 200g of chips might be 80 individual chips in a bag one day but only 73 chips the next day. The bag is "half empty" because they're trying to protect the product from being crushed. You'd all be happier in life if you chose to be offended by less than everything.

While you are correct, companies definitely do put in more air than there needs to be to prevent the chips from being crushed.

Its not air, its nitrogen. Lays uses nitrogen to keep their chips crispier. It supposedly extends shelf life to do so.

End me That would be counter productive. Over inflating the bags increases 1) waste from popping, 2) warehouse storage space, 3) fuel costs per bag, and 4) shelf space occupied by the product. These all decrease profits for the manufacturer and they're only a factor because you and I don't like a bag full of crumbs. Trust me, if consumers didn't demand a cushioned bag, the packaging would be flatter to fit more in the space - and you'd never see an entire chip in your life.

Lupine Dream it's not just Lays, but you're correct. Inert gases like nitrogen force the oxygen from the bag, preventing the chemical reactions that cause staleness.

So I’m in middle and there is a Starbucks right by day school. They actually over fill. No asking needed! The whip on frappes also comes out of the lid. The lattes are also filled fully. So idk about the Starbucks one.

So I don't know if maybe I was lied to, but when I worked as a barista not for starbucks we were told to leave room at the top of hot beverages. The reason why is so customers can put cream in sugar in their drinks.

i worked at dunkin’ donuts for 2 years. the “fill line” was introduced because people tend to squeeze the cups a bit. if we filled the cups to the top AND the customers squeezed them, the lid would pop off and piping hot coffee would spill out everywhere. a coworker of mine actually got fired over that exact thing. it’s for the safety of the customer and the financial status of the restaurant. i always tended to “forget” which size they wanted and gave them a large or extra large because of this problem. if you’re paying 1.99 for a 24 ounce cup of coffee, you should get 24 ounces. i’d rather give em a 30-31 ounce cup with the same fill line principle🤷🏻‍♀️

Actually, number 6 is partially correct. I live in Michigan, my wife and I went to an NCG cinema and I asked if I could see the projectors and they showed me. I was very impressed with the tech. There is a special overlay that they swing in front of the normal lens that allows for 3D to be viewed. When they wish to just use regular 2D they flip this filter up allowing for normal projection. It works through special encoding in the hard drives of those movies and the computer that controls the filter. At least that is how it was explained to me.
