All of this takes it for granted that you are not single. Lucky you with husband and children!

Yes, I am lucky! That said, I have friends with mobility challenges who travel with their friends or their siblings, which can be a wonderful "work around" for those who are single.

Thanks for the information! My husband and I would like to take Amtrak from NJ to Canada. Does Amtrak (or a private company) have a wheelchair service that could transport us from the Lyft to the train. And upon arrival from train to our Lyft. Thanks!

The stations should be accessible from the street to the train platforms. As for boarding the train, according to the Amtrak website (www.amtrak.com/planning-booking/accessible-travel-services/wheeled-mobility-device-services.html), they have station-based lifts to assist with getting on and off the train and also can provide ramps for bi-level trains. You can also request boarding assistance from an Amtrak staff member. I would suggest calling them at 1-800-USA-RAIL or TTY 1-800-523-6590 to discuss find out the details, make advance reservations for your travel (wheelchair seating is limited), and ask about any discounted fares you may be entitled to receive. Good luck!

I didn't find New York to be scooter friendly. If you thought the subway system was hard enough to navigate, try adding the problem that less than half of the stations are accessible. Getting around was oretty difficult.

Good point, Wikipedia reports that only about 29 percent of subway stations are accessible. But,you were brave to try it! I wouldn't even attempt the subway when I have been there and I am not challenged - I've heard it's sooo complicated and dangerous. That said, there are many accessible buses, ferries, and taxis the city and the things to see (museums, shows, Empire State Building, 9-11 Memorial, etc) are accessible.
