Where is McGregors downfall after getting chocked

I am a guy who has suffered 4 concussions in my lifetime. I can tell you from personal experience that being knocked out is not a temporary injury. After every one your more likely for it to happen again. This is an awesome sport, but people shouldn't expect these athletes to have long careers. Your body just won't tolerate this kind of abuse in the long term.

Have to agree. Never personally been knocked out but I’ve had multiple concussions and seemingly each one, took less of an impact to make me see stars. Went from hard hits in games causing one rarely to routine hits creating lost time in my mind

Mind you, this was in football, with pads and rules in place to protect the head/neck. Violent sports result in head injuries, resulting in short careers, and likely short lives. Just the nature of the beast I suppose

Yes each time you get knocked out you can get knocked out easier next time then next time even easier yes that's very true

It was also great to see Robbie with Rory at the hospital : respect between 2 total warriors - a rare breed.

Been knocked out 3 times. 6 concussions. I’m a goalie in soccer, no MMA fighter, but I tell you this; you are never the same after one, let alone multiple, on a world stage.

I know exactly what you mean about.. Never being the same after concussion. In October I suffered my latest, it has changed a lot in terms of memory and patience with other people. It makes me sad at times due to who I was, and what I feel now. I suffer from headaches a lot more than I ever did before. If you hit your head, go see a doctor. Multiple head strikes can cause unseen yet irreversible damage to your brain. Please be careful. 🙏

@@StraightouttaBristol memory is something that has definitely suffered the most from my concussions but the hardest part is trying to act normal sometimes. I’m more snappy and on edge, so I’ve had to be consciously aware of that at most times. Absolutely draining.

It was hard to understand my time was up in sports, but at 21 with 6 concussions I had to call it quits. I am thankful for the gym more than ever because of this. Just have to find happiness elsewhere

It's why some people become legends. Being physically tough is only part of what's needed. The mental toughness is what really counts.

@@dojo3175 well you can watch fighters like Nazeem Hamed who didn't like getting hit or you can watch fighters like Nick Diaz. It's easy to convince yourself it's doing damage when it just hurts. I guess it comes down to why you fight. Fight because you like it and fight to show off are very different things.

Ronda's issue was really with her coach (and possibly bf) convincing her that she's some kind of elite stiker. Her strength was always grappling, but it got into her head that she should start throwing hands in the ring instead of sticking with her classic "takedown and submit" strategy that worked so well

That, and in my opinion, she needed a psych coach as well. A lot of athletes do better with that. She bundled all her self worth into the title, and doubled down on that style after the first loss. I think she should have switched camps and leaned into her strengths as you pointed out.

Yep, who could ever forget that comical footage of her before the Holm fight shadow "boxing". Just throwing straight shots, no speed of hands, no head movement, no footwork. Yet her coach convinced her she could box. Even during the Holm fight, she didn't try anything other than stand up and throw hands. Weird to think that her entire life could be different now if her coach had said to during the Holm fight, "you are losing the stand up, so maybe try a take down or too".

That fight Cody had against Cruz was one of the best performances i've seen.

Tony Ferguson is probably an example of someone who is too tough for his own good and that will have devastating effects on his health a little later on in his life. That fight with Justin Gaethje shaved years off of Tony's life without a doubt. Even though Gaethje wasn't going in on him with full power, the punches he was landing repeatedly were very powerful and you could hear the impact of each punch landed due to no crowd being at the fight. Those shots would have KO most anyone else but the fact that Tony absorbed bomb after bomb from the heavy handed Gaethje will no doubt be a factor later on in his life I am afraid. Speaking of Justin Gaethje I believe that he will have one of the most severe cases of CTE once he retires from fighting due to his ability to withstand powerful shots to the head and still be dangerous even when he is on rubber legs. People may not realize it now but Justin is literally giving everything to entertain the crowds and I feel like he knows this as well. I pray he remains healthy but the way things are looking we are going to start to see the results of all these blows to the head and how it effects these modern day gladiators...

I don’t know why people always say this. He’s taken hits yes, but if you research strikes absorbed lists, Gaethje isn’t even remotely close to the fighters who have taken an excess amount of strikes. Fighters like Donald Cerrone or Max Holloway should be mentioned before him.

It’s heartbreaking to see a person in a fighting sport lose their chin. Chuck Liddell was my first beloved fighter I witnessed lose his chin. He was an iron man but after so many punches he couldn’t stand anymore and I watched him get brutally knocked out about 5 times before he finally quit. Look at him now and you can tell he’s in bad shape. It’s tough to think that there’s other people that are going through this but I don’t even notice because I can’t stop watching

Actually out his last 7 he only won 1 fight. Dana White had to pay Chuck Liddell to retire because Chuck love fighting, you could see it in his eyes and punches. Tony Ferg is the same way, he doesn’t want to retire because he loves fighting, They’re both animals.

The spirit and psychology of fighters is by far the most intriguing part of the sport. Great video.

Miguel Torres always comes to mind for me. 7-7 record after the knockout loss to Brian Bowles before retiring. Still picked up some wins but crazy how fast he dropped off.

the Tony-Gaethje fight was the only MMA fight where I ever thought that is enough man stop, In the end Tony was like involontarily shaking his head like he couldn't take more abuse it was hard to watch

This is why corners need to feel comfortable throwing in the towel. These guys are way too tough to quit. They wont do it. That JG fight basically ended Tony's career. It was so hard to watch. It was a great fight, but watching tony take that damage was rough.

As simple as it sounds, this is also very tricky in a sport where a KO stoppage can come at any time; not withstanding if a person was losing or winning. A KO takes seconds and that’s that, done! It’s obvious fighters and corners believe they can pull it out the fire and deliver a fight ending strike which would ultimately crown the story. Considering also this fighters are honed to endure insane amount of pain and push through enormous adversity, you’d never really realise when a person isn’t actually being tough and has just had enough. The line isn’t very clear especially in the heat of the moment , when something is on the line. To the fighters and corners, it’s just another day at the office to push past your limits. The only perk here is your limit is another human standing across and pummelling you until the ref calls it or you drop unconscious to the canvas.

Now you see why Floyd Jr was able to fight as long as he did. He developed arguably the best defense in boxing and rarely got hit really hard. So he didn't end up with a number of concussions and lose his ability to fight. He may have put on some boring fights, but he proved that defense is king.

I realize I'm chiming in on this but I feel like it needs to be pointed out that sugar Ray Robinson got the vast majority of his 19 defeats at the end of his career. If it was possible to have a prime Mayweather fight a prime Robinson..without ANY hesitation I"m putting my money on Robinson. He was that good.

I remember Khabib talking about that fight. He was saying that he didn't even want to fight Fergusen after that because he was now compromised. "You never fully recover after you take a beating like that."

Dan vs Dustin wasn't so one sided. Dan won the first 2 rounds, but it's just those last 3, or more specifically the last 2 rounds were in the words of Makhachev, "he almost died there". But the fight as a whole was competitive.

Ben Askren did actually choke out Robbie Lawler which is why he dropped his hand. Herb checked his hand which led to Ben loosening the choke, allowing Robbie enough oxygen to wake up. Let's not continue the narrative that it was a ref mistake.

Good work on this. Shows how a nasty loss and knock-out can last for years. Staring into that dark void can really mess with you. After a few, even after a solid career, a bad knock-out can end it all.

Justin gaethje and poirier are my favorite fighters in the game. Never was a big Tony fan. But it hurt my heart to see him get smashed like that, and I hated that he accepted the fight.. I wanted Tony to hold out and wait for khabib. But the dude is such a warrior he refused.

Renan barao for sure. Went from one of the pound for pound best fighters to a completely different guy after that first tj loss

Arlovski was told he was done about 10 years ago after several brutal knock outs but some how he was able to pull it together. He might be the only example of getting knocked out on the reg and then having a good career following that.

I heard Cody’s beef with TJ was VERY personal. He clearly fought with emotion over poise vs someone not only whose a great fighter but was also on PEDs. It’s a shame to see how his career trajectory has gone since, but I’m hopeful he can find himself again and bounce back

That Askren/Maia fight was very underrated. Constant back and forth between jiujutsu and wrestling

The first concussion I ever experienced I was ran over by an ex friend and his best friend in a car doing 45 mph bounced off the car and tried to stand but my leg was snapped and my eyebrow was hanging over my eye. I stood up and remembered blood just pouring out of my face and I just fell back down, I looked down and my leg was turned all the way around. I woke up a month later in the hospital.

The best about the Holm Rousey fight is that Holm wasn't ready for a title fight. Dana pushed the fight up. He largely underestimated how inept Tarverdyan was to have a grappler believing she could out box a boxing champion

Lawyer v Macdonald 2 was, and is my favourite fight ever. I started watching ufc in 2005 and saw Rob's highs and lows. Then when he came back. Macdonald was a favourite too. I had no side in it, was brutal and a true fight of two warriors. ❤

I think Rory really had potential to not only win the title, but retain it. Unfortunately, he met Lawler (who was definitely on the decline, but still in what most would consider his prime)- and both of their careers changed that night. I've never seen a fight like that since, and honestly I'm not sure if I want to for the sake of the competitors. That was two high level athletes being 100% primal and still going for it with their bodies battered. When I was watching the Gaethje vs Tony fight or the Yan vs Faber fight, it gave me flashbacks- although it wasnt even remotely on the same level of Lawler vs Rory II. I'm not sure if Tony will ever be the same- Gaethje is the most violent person in a violent sport, and I genuinely think there's something atypical about the amount of power he generates/how strong his body is in terms of dealing with trauma. It would be almost idiotic for the UFC to book him vs Conor knowing that- especially now that Conor is out of his prime and has taken a lot of damage- I think Conor might be forced to retire if he takes that fight. Sage northcutt also had a lot of potential and hype behind him, definitely changed after the fractures to his skull. Give these people their flowers while they're still around, because the average career of a ufc fighter is pretty much the same as an NFL running back- it's a brutal sport.

I wouldn't say conor has taken a lot of damage he has broke his ankle got quickly stopped by poirier choked quickly against the Russian. His decline has been self inflicted by having loads of hanger ons clubbing coke drinking no need to fight through money

The one that surprised me the most was Rousey. I never expected her to react to that Holly Holm loss the way she did. She just dropped off the radar instantly.

I’ve had from what I can remember four concussions in my twenty years of combat sports. 3 of them were from just training, only one in an actual fight. I’m 32 now and I’m epileptic, after a bad concussion from a session of bjj my whole life changed. Many people who train don’t even become pro but end up with injuries that are life changing, I got a lot of respect for these fighters stepping into a ring knowing any moment could change their lives or end it as they know it. It’s no wonder so many fighters end up with mental disabilities, I know the love of training and fighting but I would be lying to say I don’t understand these men after their losses, I remember my first time coming back after that serious concussion it’s been maybe 6-7 years and I’m still not the same. Be aware of the risks training you don’t gotta be a professional to get seriously injured or killed.

@@lollmao9906 Personality changes along with loss of memory and sometimes I’m physically limited depending on my condition at the time. I’ve had to change my whole life around now that im epileptic. Some days it’s even hard to talk or even do regular things, other days you’d never be able to tell unless I told ya, that being said I still love training despite my injuries IMO it’s always better to at least learn how to defend yourself vs getting into a situation with no self defense skills, head injuries are like knee injuries in soccer almost every person knows someone who’s at least had a concussion.

I'll never forget that Jones vs Gustafson fight

This is beautiful yet very brutal profession. After being knocked out you will lose durability and it will be for you to get knocked out again. Only gets worse. let’s just continue to appreciate and show them the respect they all deserve

Might need to redo the first entry on the list. Hooker proved his improved immensely and that he still has a crazy jaw in the Jalin Turner fight

So sad seeing what all these fighters go thru for the sport they love Dan Hooker has the heart of a champion and in my top 5 fav fighters of all time.

Rhondas downfall was so spectacular it's still crazy to me. Literally went from absolutely unbeatable to completely gone from the sport in 2 fights. If her attitude wasn't so shitty I might feel bad for her lol

Jose Aldo was never on a complete decline, he was still competing with the best of the best, but it was time for him to lay down the MMA gloves.

Tony Ferguson was asked to choose between staying on meds and keeping his wife or keeping off meds and retaining his tempo. He chose his wife... he did not lose his soul after a tough loss. FFS

Exactly as khabib said, once you took that much damage you will never gonna be same. People dont want to understand what kind of practice and mentality fighters need for this sports. Its actually insanse, people just wanna see deadly fight that would make fighter in blood shed then they will consider that as fight. But once you get damaged like these, may be not today or tomorrow that damage would hurt your body. Thats why people like khabib are so intelligent. He know how to fight, when to fight and when to finish. Even though he finished his career 2 years earlier but even he continuous, im sure he dont want to continue this for more than 2 to 3 years. As he understand you have to do some other responsibilities as well and that needs a healthy life to carry on.

As a Ferguson fan I absolutely hate Justin for what he did to Tony. But at the same time as an mma fan I respect Justin for the same reason. That's what sucks sometimes about this sport. All in all in the end I just hope both fighters (and all the others) get to end their careers on their own terms and hopefully with no horrible, lifelong lasting effects.

Dan hooker and Poirier might be one of the most brutal fights I’ve seen and it was during Covid so no audience. you could hear just some of the loudest impacts from strikes for 5 rounds. It was amazing and terrifying at the same time.

McDonald and Lawler's 2nd fight was awesome both of their noses were flattened at the end it was crazy 🤣🤣😂.....

Said it before. When one is the champ, you absolutely have to beat them decisively. Champs get and maybe rightfully so, an edge. Gustavson vs. Jones isn't the same as Hendricks vs. St. Pierre. But I think most people get the point.

Johnny Hendricks was juiced to the gills. USADA came to town and over night he had the sloppiest dad bod I've ever seen outside of heavyweights and Ben Askren. That's what made St Pierre leave the sport. Robbie was juiced to the gills against Rory it was so obvious watching the fight live. There's no way anyone could have walked through Rory's shots like he did, and every one of his punches were rearranging Rory's face. He lost because his face literally fell apart. I agree to be the champ you gotta beat the champ but come on man don't mention freaking Hendricks and St. Pierre.

Old post but yes back in the day you had to beat the champ decisively or atleast like strickland just did. Back then if you didn't beat the champ overwhelmingly you did not win. Gustafson today would have gotten the decision. Very good point you made !

I watched that Andre Arlovski vs FEDOR fight live on PPV and Andre was whipping Fedors ass bad, but then he decided to get fancy and throw a flying knee and Fedor threw that big bomb right on Andre's jaw and...OUT COLD ! At the time Fedor had never "Truly" been defeated. And I started watching at UFC #2 with Pat Smith(Big scary kickboxer who had just elbowed a Ninjitsu guy to death, almost.) vs Royce Gracie in the final. Through the GSP, BJ Penn, Brock Lesnar, Anderson Silva, Conor Mcgregor era's up until now. Still loving UFC! Thank GOD my girlfriend loves it too.

mcgregors biggest downfall was winning the 2nd belt. never was the same after that

My least favorite is the story of Rory McDonald. I love the man.... He was absolutely championship material. He was an incredible fighter. I loved his mindset. He was such a good guy too. Favorite Canadian fighter bedsides st Pierre and I felt so bad for him.

Watching Rhonda lose to Holly is one of my favorite moments in sporting history.

He never knocked somebody out, or made them such damage like thoses fighters have received, he's fighting style let him avoid a lot of damage, he also knew when retired and stood healthy

Anderson Silva's case was different. He lost his first title at the age of 38 and because of himself, yes, Weidman knocked him out, but because Anderson was kidding too much And in the rematch he broke his leg 39 years old, post broken leg, it would be hard to get back on top again

I was so pumped during the end of the robbie/rory fight...that i forgot how pissed i was for the first 2½ rounds of them 2 avoiding each other to the boos of the crowd.

Guy who continued to get better after being flatlined multiple times, can’t remember about 5 months of his life, lost an eye, then continued fighting and won the world title. And still remains more wittier and present than most non fighters. Michael Bisping. Crazy how many KOs he’s taken and even lost his final fight. Never one moment spent feeling sad. His mental state appears sharp as ever.

That's the strangest thing about CTE: some people simply don't get it. There are fighters who you can tell are losing it by the time they're 40 and others who remain lucid until the day they die.

I knew Rousey was going to fall. She faced a bunch of “scrubs” for lack of better words. As soon as the league started getting real talent, she lost. Respect to her and Tate for growing the female UFC to what it is now tho.

No. The failure came from bad coaching attempting to shift Ronda into a striker. Ronda and her record speaks for itself. She was a champion through sheer ground domination utilizing judo and armbars. When idiots convinced her to stand and throw and abandon what got her the belt, she was setup to lose.

Sooner or later, someone would've been able to come up with a plan to defend themselves against her armbar. That's why she tried to change her style. Too bad her coach was an idiot.

Adding striking into her repertoire makes her a more versatile fighter, abandoning _all_ grapple, control, ground, and submission technique in _lieu_ of striking is not the same. She did not try to expand her toolset, which is smart, she tried to replace her tools outright with those she was inexperienced with.

Lawler really did take Rory's soul. His nose was never the same either, Rory had a ton of potential. People labeled him the next greatest Canadian next to GSP, he was never the same after Robbie.. Neither was Johnny Hendricks.

Robbie was juiced to the gills bro. It was so obvious that night watching the fight. Most of these fighters fought guys that popped with USADA, or that most people including the guys they faught suspect it. The title of the video should be careers that were derailed and ruined by juiced fighters. Think about it. Robbie hasn't done anything since USADA. Faught once a year if that. I don't even need to mention Hendricks, that's why Pierre left the sport. USADA comes Hendricks instantly has a dad bod and looks worse then Ben Askren. Smh

Lawler was never the same again either unfortunately, Rory gave as good as he got, busted Lawler up and had him stunned more than once. I think Hendricks fell off due to USADA being so strict with PED testing and also banning IV drips which guys like Hendricks needed since he had hard weight cuts to make 170.

Yeah because in the moment Jon didnt think he done enough to claw back the deficits but the judges and some fans have seen things others have not apparently My opinion is Jon lost first 2 rounds hands down, round 3 Jon done just enough to stop it being a draw and Gustafson looked dead in the last 2 let's be honest he made some flurry's it was a great fight
