A dragon is a large, serpent-like legendary creature that appears in the folklore of many cultures around the world. Beliefs about dragons vary drastically by region, but dragons in western cultures since the High Middle Ages have often been depicted as winged, horned, four-legged, and capable of breathing fire. Dragons in eastern cultures are usually depicted as wingless, four-legged, serpentine creatures with above-average intelligence.
The earliest attested dragons resemble giant snakes. Dragon-like creatures are first described in the mythologies of the ancient Near East and appear in ancient Mesopotamian art and literature. Stories about storm-gods slaying giant serpents occur throughout nearly all Indo-European and Near Eastern mythologies. Famous prototypical dragons include the mušḫuššu of ancient Mesopotamia; Apep in Egyptian mythology; Vṛtra in the Rigveda; the Leviathan in the Hebrew Bible; Python, Ladon, Wyvern, and the Lernaean Hydra in Greek mythology; Jörmungandr, Níðhöggr, and Fafnir in Norse mythology; and the dragon from Beowulf.
The popular western image of a dragon as winged, four-legged, and capable of breathing fire is an invention of the High Middle Ages, based on a conflation of earlier dragons from different traditions. In western cultures, dragons are portrayed as monsters to be tamed or overcome, usually by saints or culture heroes, as in the popular legend of Saint George and the Dragon. They are often said to have ravenous appetites and to live in caves, where they hoard treasure. These dragons appear frequently in western fantasy literature, including The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien, the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling, and A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin.
The word "dragon" has also come to be applied to the Chinese lung (traditional 龍, simplified 龙, Pinyin long), which are associated with good fortune and are thought to have power over rain. Dragons and their associations with rain are the source of the Chinese customs of dragon dancing and dragon boat racing. Many East Asian deities and demigods have dragons as their personal mounts or companions. Dragons were also identified with the Emperor of China, who, during later Chinese imperial history, was the only one permitted to have dragons on his house, clothing, or personal articles.
Commonalities between dragons include: snake-like features, reptilian-like scaly skin, four legs with three or four toes on each, spinal nodes running down the back, a tail, and a serrated jaw with rows of teeth. Several modern scholars believe huge extinct or migrating crocodiles bear the closest resemblance, especially when encountered in forested or swampy areas, and are most likely the template of modern dragon imagery. [1] [2]. This also fits with the ancient words 'Draco' and ‘Drakon’, meaning ‘large serpent’ or ‘sea serpent.’

And according to the art used for its section its not even a Drake! It's either a Dragon or Wyvern as the guy said its sometimes depicted with 2 legs, and the art showing it has wings. So yeah, it's a fraud, not a Drake, a dragon.

anyone who has read the dragonology knows about all of these. Also, in that book, dragons in asian mythology (both chinese, tibetan and japanese) were much calmer and kinder, and less carnivorous than European dragons or Viverns etc. They were worshipped for their strength and wisdom, and were said to be very proud and respectful, while obviously demanding respect back. The ones named in this video look and act like a mixture of The Vivern, The ice Dragon, and The European Dragon. Also, these are not types of dragons, these are myths with different named dragons.

I've actually heard two versions of the St. George Dragon. In the version you've mentioned, Mega Top Tens, after wounding the Dragon, St. George asks for the princess's sash so that he can tie it around the Dragon's neck as a leash. He then leads it back to the kingdom, and it spends the rest of its life protecting that kingdom as a guardian (the equivalent of a watch dog). But the first version I heard had St. George fighting and actually killing the Dragon, but it kicks St. George's ass quite a bit as well. Round 1: George gets hit by the Dragon's fire and goes down, but his squire grabs an orange from an enchanted orchard nearby and feeds it to St. George, which heals him. Round 2: George manages to inflict some damage on the Dragon, but it still beats him. However, the squire grabs another orange and heals St. George again. Round 3: Now the Dragon starts to panic. "What do I have to do to kill this guy?" So it just charges forward with the intention of completely flattening St. George underneath its body, but this exposes its vulnerable belly, and St. George is able to drive his sword right into the Dragon's heart and kill it.

@Quentin Clark You are ignorant! Dragon Ball is Chinese! All Japanese traditional cultures come from China. If you don't believe it, you can go to UNESCO to verify it. You can take a look at the history of Japanese civilization. Do you know why Japan can break away from the backward stone civilization? It is because China has handed over the civilization, cultural system, science and technology to Japan!!

I think I'm the only one who knows about hydra-naga nimêdîe. People say that it's literally a hybrid of a hydra & a naga (not sure how), its behavior is based on certain things. Like for example if something was taken over, the "Hydra-Naga" (shortened) will devour who toke over and anyone who helped. The beast have powers very similar to the dragon king's but never used its original powers. It's said that the beast is "inmortal" yet it can be killed by the four dragon kings. Its scales are powerful for defense. But when not in battle the scales starts to somehow turn to fur for warmth. When angering the beast, there is no way to escape, the beast will immediately eliminate the target. I have not looked at any pictures yet, if this reply isn't edited then there is no pictures of this strange yet powerful beast.

HeartArt Comics in Tolkein's world Smaug simply isn't big enough to be a full fledged Dragon (the name escapes right now) but Morgoth's dragon was far, far bigger than Smaug, the largest of its kind I believe. So Smaug is not a Dragon, though he looks like one and is part of the dragon species, he is rather a fire drake, or a dragon in its equivalent of its teen years

End my Cancerous Existence A dragon is a dragon no matter the species. Drake is Japanese for Dragon. Smaug how ever is a Dragon or another term a Wyvern which is a dragon with arms as wings. It is confirmed that Smaug is a Dragon. He is 97ft in length from nostral to tip of his tail with the wingspan of 99ft. Watch closely at the beginning of Battle of the five armies. His hand is literally close to the size of a house.

Oh, have you ever read the Marco Polo's encounter with a ''dragon''? I mean, where you have got the idea that mostly dragons had wings and they breathed fire and ice? Most myths don't even mention wings or fire, but rather blood thirsty reptilian like creatures. Also we do have dinosaurs who had wings... Dinosaurs come in many shapes just like dragons.

  • @suomipoika1796

    @suomipoika1796

    6 жыл бұрын

Also, it's not confirmed that all dinosaurs were covered in feathers... Some were. Fossils have been found where it clearly shows reptilian skin. What i was trying to say... What if dragons are not a myth, but real creatures. The dragons from myths are the fossils of dinosaurs, because the word dinosaur was invented in year 1841... The myths of dragons are thousands of years old. The word dragon is a lot older than word dinosaur.

Dragons have always fascinated me and I was born in the year of the dragon. The comments here all seem to relate only to them. Understandable, but as long as we're talking about great myths I'd like to cover a main human character. Beowulf. Pronounced Bay-wulf. Thanks! Good fun here.

I do have one question about this list, though: Are Nagas really Dragons? When I hear the term "Naga", what I imagine is a creature much more akin to a Mermaid, but with a snake tail instead of a fish tail. Are these creatures Nagas, or am I thinking of Lamias instead?

Gabriel Drake naga is a Sanskrit word which means serpent. So nagas are literally serpent like creatures. They have the ability to shapeshift and can take human form. They reside in nagalok, the abode of serpents, which is said to be beneath even hell.

The guy who made this video clearly doesn't know anything about dragons. It would be possible to refute literally everything he said, but I will just focus on the Biblical dragons which he clearly is the most ignorant of all about. For example, there wasn't even a dragon connected to Saint George for hundreds of years, and it was merely added to the Saint George's story by a greedy Bishop writing a book about Saints, because Saint George's story was fairly boring, with him actually being a Roman soldier martyred by a pagan emperor, with NO dragon at all in his story. The author is also totally ignorant of the fact that the highest heavenly creatures in the Jewish and Christian religions were dragons, as "Seraphim" , the Hebrew word for these "dragon-angels" was translated to the Greek word Drakon (meaning dragon) by both ancient Jewish Rabbis and early Christian theologians. Satan was believed to be a literal dragon, just like the Seraphim dragons that did not rebel. It should not be surprising that there would be dragon deities in original Christianity, given the fact that nearly every other culture had dragon deities as well. Even God in the Bible is described with fiery breath, smoking nostrils, huge wings, and an appetite for calves, lamb, and Midianite virgins!

Here’s some dragon types you missed completely: To identify draconic species: • Dragons without wings are drakes • Dragons without legs but has wings are amphipteres • Dragons with wings and two legs are Wyverns (Skyrim) • Dragons without wings or legs are Wyrms or Serpents. • Dragons without wings or back legs are Lind Wyrms. • Dragons with four legs and wings are just your typical dragon. • Smaller dragons are called Whelps

The Philippines has its own take on dragons, in pre-colonial times, i.e. before the colonization of Spain, the Filipinos has their own mythologies and legends, one such is the Bakunawa or the Moon-eater. I don't know if it's borrowed from the Malays and Indones People, since we share the same ancestry basically.
