10 Top Tips for Recovering from Coronavirus | The Lessons From 9 Months of Long Covid Studies

Ғылым және технология

If you're still trying to recover from a Covid-19 infection, these top tips might just speed up that process - these are the lessons learnt from 10 months of studies into the virus, the long tail of symptoms and what might be causing them. They might even be able to stop you going on to develop Long Covid in the first place.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Long Covid Handbook (Oct 2022), by Gez Medinger and Professor Danny Altmann and published by Penguin Books is now available in paperback, ebook and audiobook. A singular resource that brings together everything patients, clinicians and academics have learnt about the condition since early 2020, as well as lessons from sufferers and researchers of ME/CFS and other chronic conditions. It offers world leading expert advice on understanding, managing and treating Long Covid. The Long Covid Handbook is available from the following links:

IMPORTANT: It is ESSENTIAL to talk to your doctor before taking any supplements that you have not taken before, or begin taking them at a larger dose. This regimen is NOT appropriate for children so they should speak to their doctor before taking any of these.
Nicotinic acid / Niacin also has several strong contraindications, they can be seen here:
bnf.nice.org.uk/drug/nicotini...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niacin
I have to be clear and say that I am not a doctor, nor am I personally advocating you take Niacin or any other supplement or medication mentioned in this film. This is a decision you must make yourself with the consultation of your GP if you have any concerns at all.
So, all that said - here is what I am currently taking.
Niacin: I started at a low dose (10-20mg)/ be careful of flushing)
Selenium: 100mcg / day
Zinc: 15-30mg / day
Quercetin: 500mg 3x / day
Vitamin C: 500-1000mg 3x / day
Vitamin D: 3-5000iu / day

Went strict low histamine in October with only three type vegetables in rotation W fresh only meat, (preferably poultry) and now incorporating quinoa and potatoes. Oh and an apple a day for the ursolic acid to help remylenation of nerves and increase brown fat and reduce white fat. www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/06/120620212855.htm

Its really great to have someone believe you. Had it last March. Thought it was over in June. At the time, I thought I had a cold. I fight on with help from husband and daughters. This has been very helpful. Many people experience vertigo. I was unable to balance. Many people jyst get dizzy. I watched a few helpful videos on you tube. Thank you Gez. I have a tip: the buzzing / vibration feeling can be reduced by hypnotherapy. The buzzing is caused by the body making too much adrenaline, in response to the inflammation. But you can’t heal in fight-or-flight mode. Reducing adrenaline thru deep relaxation puts you in to a better state for healing.

So happy to have found this channel. I had, what I would consider a mild case, of covid at the end of December/beginning of January. After recovering I felt normal, albeit tired, for about 2 weeks. Then out of the blue, I started experiencing random episodes of low-grade fever, nausea/heartburn, shortness of breath, extreme muscle and joint pain, and crazy fatigue. These come around every couple of days, and only last a few hours, after which I return to feeling pretty much normal. It is the most bizarre thing I have ever experienced. As a hyper-analytical person who HATES any form of vagueness, I am frustrated by the lack of data and consistent resources on covid and even more so by the lack of information on post-covid. Very curious to know if anyone else is experiencing symptoms in waves as well?

Concerning skin problems: I found out that mine are mainly due to gluten in my diet. I was a previous triathlete, etc...so spaghetti was part of the normal diet. Apparently, somewhere around age 45, I developed an allergy to this diet as I began having skin problems I had never had before. Dermatologists prescribed steroid creams (which worked temporarily) along with moisturizers, but could not tell me why, so I continued with this diet not knowing I had a gluten problem. I was still in excellent shape, but had some gas problems I never took that seriously. Anway, Covid hit me in June 2019, and on my second relapse, I had eczema problems that I had never had before. The skin problems became magnified. This time, I took the steroid creams and within a few weeks, most blemishes disappeared. I continued my moisturizers, BUT this time (due to listening to my son, who was discovering his own gluten problem-probably inherited from me), stopped eating gluten. My skin is almost perfect again????.....

It’s very important to take supplements at the proper time of day, and it varies for each one. Also, certain minerals can cancel each other out if taken at the same time. Alcohol intolerance was one of my early me/cfs symptoms and is very common although entirely under studied, in mecfs. Really, although I understand people with longcovid not wanting to be dumped (and abandoned) in with those with mecfs, even despite the huge symptom, onset and management overlap, I really think IF drs had taken mecfs more seriously they would: 1) have been prepared for post viral longcovid instead of acting as if it’s all new and a surprise, and 2)many of these tips (on diet, alcohol, pacing, caution with exercise management of relapses and approach to going back to work etc) well known in the mecfs community who tried to share all we could, but had limited reach, might have been imparted more quickly to the waves of longcovid victims instead of them having to learn for themselves (many relapses and months in). The medical profession at the start were refusing to look beyond 3-6 month time frames and brushing mecfs similarities off on that score, now it’s many months in mecfs is still being pushed aside. I think The long covid NICE guidelines are supposed to be short on detailed management and don’t mention post exertional malaise, which is missing opportunity to really help and safe guard people and could well be down to trying to avoid associating with mecfs. On the positive, it could be argued that the uk approach to long covid has worked ie because longcovid hasn’t been scorned and dumped as mecfs, an illness tragically with little understanding and respect in medical circles, all subgroups of longcovid ARE interesting the medical profession such as the British school of immunologists who were not interested in mecfs at all and also has secured massive research funding. Therefore the future for longcovid , even with out the natural recovery obviously many in this early stage are still hoping for, is far from hopeless, treatments will be found, and who knows the mecfs community might benefit too.

The rest thing is absolutely key. I got covid in Jan 2020, pretty bad actually but went to the gym every day for the whole 3 weeks I was sick. I was an idiot. I have no idea how I bounced back so quickly... probably cause I was taking so many supps & it was the first time I got it. Well recently in Jan 2022 I got omicron. It completely wiped me for a month. 0 energy at all to workout. Interestingly after a month I thought "I feel ok, think I can head back to the gym". I go back to the gym for 2 weeks... BAD DECISION!!! All these symptoms I didn't have before... I quickly developed so many symptoms of long covid. Tinnitus, horrible brain fog, insomnia, fatigue... my body & brain screamed "NO!!" So the next week I only went to the gym 3 days. Still felt like I was getting worse. Then the next week did the gym 2 days. It seems 2 days a week is all I can tolerate right now. With intermittent walking sessions. I thought lots of exercise was "smart", as it might help "sweat out" the virus. That logic is clearly flawed. It felt more like I was sweating out brain cells than a virus. And has probably made my long covid worse than it needed to be.

Another great video! Am I the only one who's mental health is good since having covid? I have suffered with depression all my life until the last few months where things improved. However since having covid, I feel very positive and hopeful for my future. I'm not sure why! May be because I was in hospital for 4 days thinking I was going to die any minute? I was told that I probably wouldn't make it so I really expected to take a turn for the worse and check out any any point. On my 4th night I realise that I was probably going to live. It made me really excited for my future. It's a feeling that I haven't been able to shake since, even whilst experiencing some withdrawal tapering off opiate based medication. Even mild opiate withdrawal can make you feel depressed so I feel really fortunate.

@RUN-DMC great video and thanks for this. I'm taking Niacin at the moment and just wondered what I should be working up to? Currently on 100mg a day but should it be more for a better result? Also, just to clarify I should be taking Quercetin and Vitamin C 3 times a day?

Hi Sami. If you’re benefitting on 100mg niacin then stay there, otherwise build up to 200mg. And yes, if you tolerate it, 3x a day for vit c and quercetin

I have had long Covid since around April. I have had to cut out sugar completely, including fruit, or else I relapse with massive chest pain, migraines, and dizziness. The low-histamine diet doesn't seem to make any difference with me. Not sure why. Taking raw garlic before I go to sleep (and getting some good sleep in) really helps, however.

Very good news indeed! 👍 Looking forward to more fully implementing your supplement list. Thanks for including that!
