@@10MinuteWorkshop blow out depends on the cut angle of the brad or finish nail ... usually blowout is to the left or right...hold the gun perpendicular to the wood the (blow out) travels into more wood not out...

the concept of 'wood systainer' gives me a bunch of ideas to make multiple nesting boxes in a 2x 1x 1/2x 1/4x configuration, would be great to tackle several organization projects

Simple yet inspired. I am trying to think of a way of adapting this for some non-systainer size boxes that I cannot find replacements for anymore, but which I've sized all my van shelving around! (I have built 3 pairs of your sawhorses, and am still thrilled with them, years later).

Good product Peter I have something similar to hold screwdrivers, pliers , combi square etc , it's very useful and I'm never searching for hand tools.

Hi Peter that’s a great idea, I’ve just bought 4x medical sustainer 5 off eBay for £17 each! They are almost brand new and just need an anti bacterial wash… I’m going. To make a couple of these totes ! Thanks 🙏 regards Simmo

A great little tote. Now I need to order a couple of sustainers. Definitely going to build one. I might add a 20mm lip or so where the handle slots through so when separated nothing drops through. Screws etc. I’ll take a look at the plans. Cheers Peter. Another quality product.

Looks very nice! Unfortunately, I do not have the Festool boxes. But lately I have been making drawers and inserts for shelves/cupboards to organize the workshop. Using even cheaper plywood. It is mostly about finding a robust design and a slim-lined manufacturing process.

I guess I'm missing something here. Why build a box that you can carry around and put it into another box that you carry around? I like the discussion of making a system of boxes to put things in that you can mix and match how you stack them together. I've been overthinking how to make several similar boxes for carrying and storing my portable power tools. Sawdust is in my immediate future thanks to this video.

I made mine to fit into a Systainer so I could lock them together in a stack and wheel them around getting the gear into people’s houses doing installs. As I say in the video, you can make them any size you like. 👍

Neat enough design Peter. The only issue I see is the top box and the handle. If the top box is full of stuff the handle might struggle fitting through. Come to think of it, that top box would work with 3D printed boxes. Design to fit the space.

Having just bought a dozen Systainer 5’s, less than £15 each as ex-Covid Test transport boxes! I’ll most certainly be making a variation on this Peter. The NEW inserts make from that lovely 4mm aircraft ply really makes this fly!

Another useful addition to the jig could be to add a radius to the 4 corners to use with a trim router. I have one on the van and I use it all the time to finish all sorts of shelves and boxing in. 10mm, 20mm 30mm and 40mm work for me.

Really nice insert Peter! I do personally like doing wood based inserts for various systainers. I think it would be very interesting with even more inserts! The practicality of a custom insert that may even be altered by each user to ones preferences is really interesting. And the benefit here is that the insert is protected by the systainer itself when neded and when transporting. A big like to the JIG🤙

@@10MinuteWorkshop Absolutely! And if…: Jigs for making your own inserts - modular would be nice😉 Different sizes for various systainers - sort of a baseline insert that fit well and can further be customised by the user - could be an idea for you 😉

One suggestion for the universal jig. A hole which takes a 12.7mm bit and standard bushing to make the holes for hinges in cupboard doors. Just for the occasions when you don't have your door jig, because those are always the days when a customer wants a door hung the other way round.

Brilliant concept, just picked up 9 Ex Covid Syystainers for £35 for my various bits and bobs in work, I'll make one as an install kit (I'm a joiner that does a few installs if no-ones available,) will also adapt the design for various items such as power tools and accessories. I would do small protrusion at the bottom of the bottom drawer and small cutouts in the the "feet" of the the tote. This would serve as a end stop for the bottom drawer and if you put the protrusion at the bottom you can still lift the top part. This will probably make it easier to tilt the tote when inserting into the systainer with the bottom drawer attached. I would probably have the protrusion made in the bottom piece of the bottom drawer but it would create more waste material compared to a rectangular bottom piece so maybe just add a spare piece afterwards.

Nifty little tote and cheaper than many of the naff plastic tool boxes out there. One thought that I had would be to add a lip around the handle locating hole in the top box to stop any small items falling through or larger items blocking the hole when you lift it on and off. Obviously the great thing is you can customise the box to suit your needs, the options are endless!

Thanks. I used a folded over piece of P120 to centre the handle in the slot when I drilled it; that’s 0.5mm total gap. Pretty sure it’ll be fine, but as you say, you can customise it to suit your needs. 👍👍

Sorry I meant when you lift the top box off completely away from the handle. I just know I would end up chucking the odd loose screw in the top tray getting strewn everywhere 😂

Another great video! I would suggest a small wall around the handle of the top tray to prevent small tools and other bits falling through the hole when removed. Maybe this has not been a problem, but I always my top tray for smaller items. Just a thought.

Hi Peter, great stuff! For your cutouts jig, could you add rounded chamfers of different radius (like 5, 10, 15, 25mm) on the four corners? That would protect them from damage but also serve as a router jig for making those round corners as well. EDIT: hahah, just saw it on your webshop: you did it 😊!

😆 Yes, wasn’t sure I could fit them in but I managed an R30, 22.5, 15 and 10. Works really well, jig launches formally on Friday. 👍

If you can live with the fixed position you'd be better off with something like my LR32 positional guides, just with a 30mm hole for a guide bush. 👍

Even better and more versatile: the inofficial "Frankentainer": take a Sys Combi 2 and add extra drawers from a Sys Sort/3 underneath! Add an attic lid and you've got the ulitmate systainer ;)

Too sweet! I going to make one this weekend just for the fun of it :) Q: Why would you need to put in a systainer? I'm struggling to figure that one out but am sure you have an excellent reason

Why not? Easy to transport, keeps it in 'the stack' and as I say in the video, you can have stuff loose in the bottom. of the systainer and the design still allows the 'legs' of the body to fit around it all. 👍

Another "improvement" would be to add 2 small turnbutton door catches on either sude of the bottom drawer, this way it won't accidentally fall away with light contents. In quoting Peter "don't ask me how I know" 😂

Or 2 small trips of 6mm ply/MDF or any thin offcut pre-drilled with a small screw would do.

Thanks. No, no issues at all with that - I kept smaller items in the body and larger ones in the top tray - but a small lip around it would work, or some dividers / containers to keep the small stuff it, which will be coming along soon in another video. 👍

Festool makes their own tool insert for systainers, it carries a really weird selection of tools and costs a lot. I prefer mine. 👍

Hi Peter, what stops the bottom tray sliding out as you walk along swinging your arms? Something, but I couldn't spot it...

Hi Nick. That would be gravity. The slight gap between the wedges means that they don’t bear against each other when the tote is flat on a surface, but as soon as you pick it up by the handle they do and that stops it sliding. If you’re in the habit of carrying it around empty and feel the need for some reassurance, then a simple toggle of some kind on either end of the bottom tray would work, or you could angle the bevelled wedges slightly to help lock it in, like a very shallow dovetail. 👍

I have never really understood why people use systainers as a base for these projects. They are so expensive, and you pay so much for the light weight, I am always asking "why not just use the actual systainer"? Or in my case, 3 smaller systainers stacked on on top of the other. Easier to access, lighter weight, and not MUCH more expensive. I briefly flirted with putting large stuff like this inside a systainer, but I realized what I ACTUALLY wanted is for large stuff to be shaped LIKE a systainer so I could stack them together. Saves about 100 dollars off a project like this, and signficant weight. Just have connection lugs on the top and bottom. That said, like the design, I can see stealing some of this idea for a 5 gallon pail organizer I am thinking about (I keep all my glues and caulks and so on in a 5 gallon pail, as they are too big to fit in a systainer lying down).

As I'm pretty sure I say in the vid, you can make it whatever size you like, to fit whatever boxes you have. And for most folks systainers aren't expensive - they come free with expensive tools. 👍

@@10MinuteWorkshop That can be true, but is by no means universal any more. I know surfprep, you have to pay extra to get one with their sander. You can for sure get the mirka deros without a case. For track saws, the festool ones do, but milwaukee comes as a tool only, and the makita might as well come without a case given how terrible their boxes are. I don't know if bosch or dewalt come sans box, but I would suspect at least dewalt does. I know a lot of jigs CAN come with boxes, but those certainly aren't free. AND many come without. I think your domino replacement came tool only, didn't it? Don't get me wrong, I am happy if people THINK systainers are free, particularly, if they say so, loudly and repeatedly to my boss, but I personally bought almost all my systainers. In fact, only my sander right now came with one, and it didn't even have to. (I do have a free makita box for my track saw, but I don't keep my tracksaw in it because makita boxes are made of sadness.)

Nobody’s putting a gun to your head forcing you to buy the plans. You can make the tote any size you want, out of whatever you want, and I’ve given the maximum interior dimensions of the systainer that these were made for. But if you want the specific dimensions of what I made to save you the arduous task of breaking out the tape measure and figuring it out for yourself then yes, I charge for that, at a rate that’s appropriate for the time I spent on them and the time it will save you. Feel free to take your disgust to the workshop with you while you measure it out for yourself. Or to make it out of 9mm Birch ply, then the plans will seem like a total bargain… 🤷‍♂

What? You spend that much on a Systainer and it doesn't come with anything inside and you suddenly become frugal? You have a drill for drilling and a whole other one to drive screws...come on.

Huh? 1/ It's systainer sized, but it doesn't have to fit in a systainer. 2/ There's a ton of cheap systainers on the market here in the UK at the moment and 3/ You can make them with a minimal toolset, or as I say in the video, use whatever you have and add whatever fixings you need. But glue & nails have held up just fine ober the last 20 years for the original. 👍
