Tip one extra added tip ive found. if you cant get there early especially in summer daylight savings hrs. Go about 7pm ish. All the scooter kids have gone home for dinner and if its a school night , kids are not going to be back out after dinner so you will have the place almost to yourself, a lot of the time it will be only you but you may get a few stragglers that only come for a half an hr or so untill you lose light. The only other people you will see mainly is a handfull of older skaters or OG skaters getting in a short session after their kids have settled in for the night and they are always so happy to give you tips if you display a understanding of the un written skate park rules. Their usually really chill and there just grabing a bit of time without their kids or half the neighborhood kids. I dont even concider going to skate parks in the warmer months untill its past 7pm anyways as i want it to cool down a bit and ill get a 2 hr session in at a almost empty park with only serious dad skaters showing up just as happy the place is almost empty . No scooter kids snaking you at all having a latet session, no scooter moms sitting on the obsicals on their phones expecting you to look after/ put up with their kids, no 4 yos with there trikes spending all your time as they sit at the bottom of the bowl . But if you have time in the day on a school day , between school hrs is a good time to check out how busy things are as i would squeeze a skate in , in my lunch break when i was working split shifts. You may get some pre schoolers and their scooter moms but you may get lucky Really, you mainly just want to avoid from the time school gets out to dinner time and weekends if its not holidays. Tip 4 about failure and safety gear. When it comes to wrist guards, look in to the difference of regular ones with the chunk of plastic sticking out of your palm and the roller derby ones. Triple 8 , bont and killer 187 make roller derby wrist guards and its more like a cup that protects the heel of your palms ,their designed to slide , they too are designed to take multiple high impact and are less likly to snap and have you stop short and face plant as the regular ones dont slide. Only the big doller ones you can get replacment parts of that big U shaped bit of plastic when it snaps but when that snaps, its a different kind of dangerous you have to deal with and if you cant replace it, then its destin for the bin after you have hooked up on things and now have splinters of sharp plastic either still attached to your palm or flying off in every direction. I dont like them at all for that alone but if thats what you have, its better than nothing and a spiral fracture. The derby ones are the same price as the basic wrist guards and have a plate that goes over the back of your hand too so if you bash the top of your hand, your protected and they are less bulky, have better air flow and are less conspicuous but still have higher safty advantages. Ive been smashing up the same pair of killer 187 derby ones for or 9 years now and they have copped alot of punishment from using them down the skate park, street skating on my broad and quads and ive played roller derby for years with these too.. I would have snapped at least 10 pairs by now if i went for the standard pair of killer187 wrist guards that cost the same, about $28. Most big brands a standard line and have a pro line, the pro line, you can get replacement parts for the big U shaped bit of plastic on the palm ( well you use too, now??) and the derby ones you wont need replacement parts as i think the velco will die on these befor i kill them, there battle worn though. Lol I would have paid for these things i still have 10 times over if i went for the standard line wrist guards, not the derby ones. I cant kill these things but i cant say i havent tried..lol .

My first trip to the skatepark was at age 27. I went early in the morning in the middle of the week so nobody should have been there. I was totally wrong, turns out our hometown professional skateboarder Tyrone Olson was already there treflipping his girlfriend over the pyramid. I get the courage to ride up the bank ramp and immediately eat shit. Luckily Tyrone was super cool and came over and gave me some encouragement, told me to keep trying.

Wrist guards are a fucking blessing. I still wear them every session, I wear my helmet when I'm trying certain things still.

Im with you. Anything with hight im working out, my head is worth more than a helmet and ive retired a few. I basicly bounced off backwards from the top of a 5ft ramp and then add my own hight of 5'2" and landed square on the back of my head first then compleatly bodied. I hit the concreat hard that day last summer. So thats over a 10ft fall on to my skull. Even with a good quality helmet i was concussed, hate to have found out the hard way what would have happened if i did not wear one that day due to peer pressure. Clean up in aile 5.. yikes.. lol But when it comes to wrist guards , they always go on but i use the roller derby type. Their smaller in size and have more of a cup that protects your hand from the impact going up your wrist that helps stop fractures, they slide well too unlike the more common ones you see and a smaller splint that protects the top of your hand but some of the more common ones dont even have the top of the hand splint protection😮. They just have padding. To get a good quality pair like killer187 derby wrist guards, they cost the same price as killers fresh meat pack ones with the U shape of plastic at your palm . Those palm protection parts on them can snap and be a diffent kind of danger likeca sudden stop or cutting your self up or getting sharp plastic bits in you when they fail and after that, their destin for the bin unless you get the BIG doller ones and they can sometimes have replacement parts available to buy after market but we are talking about the $200, $300 inline skate pro ones and they better make coffee too at that price but the derby ones are designed for multiple impact and ive been thrashing the same pair for 9 years now. They look battle worn though.. lol Only now the velcro is starting to die but they are still kicking and these things have seen it all ,street skating on roads, park skating on concrete and i play roller derby too so polished concrete rinks and thats why they are designed to slide as it lessons the impact on your body if you slow with your own momentum like how vert knee pads are designed to slide and not catch on anything so you dont slam face first from a sudden stop , thats how i got on to these. This pair have hit the ground and saved my hands and wrists MANY times and even protected the back of my hand from a loose, wild roaming board that came flying my way a while back at the local skate park. Im not getting any younger either, im no longer made if rubber.. lol , turned 50 in April, still at it and not ready to give up just yet so i kit up as needed but yes, wont skate without my wrist guards on either. These ones i have atm may get retired soon though but ill be getting either the tripple 8 derby ones or another pair of killer187 derby ones again as ill never go back to the standard ones again after knowing how much these things cop and are still doing their job well yet are priced comparable to the bottom run of the stock lines of most of the good brands , about $27 but they have lasted as long, if not longer than what you would expect from the pro line ones $$$. And there is less chunky to them too so there less conspicuous. If your ever in the market of having to buy new ones, have a serious look at the derby ones as a choice as they are kind of modeled off the out door speed and hardcore street inline skate ones but derby, you have to expect more collision, more ground contact so there made to be light, have better air flow so you dont get as sweaty as they have webbing bits in the sides instead of all neoprene or ballistic nylon ( you are still going to get sweaty but not as much )but there tough as nails andvthey xan be washed to get the skank out of them.

I wear gloves and hand guards (the ones that have the half circle plastic bar in front). Those things have saved me from utter death so many times. That being said, I skate both street and also learning freestyle on a tiny 6.3 " boars, so I also always wear elbow and knee pads. Those three have prevented me from doing serious damage (and I'm 44!)

Go early , best tip Filming yourself is good advice but please dont film other people, some people are wanted by interpol and just trying to get their roll on like everyone else Here is my best tip: know when to quit , every major injury i have ever had was messing around while tired at the end of a session. You need great balance while skating, when we get tired you get dizzy and lose focus

Great tips dude! Can vouch for wrist guards one hundred percent, definitely worth getting some. Definitely add tricks to a line, you’re spot on that, the first trick becomes second nature as you focus on the next tricks and things progress faster. Right on.

Learning to shuvit and body varial alongside learning to ollie has actually improved the progress of all those tricks for me. I went straight in trying to learn to ollie and it wasnt happening. My Ollies kept landing with the board veering off, and it wasn’t until i started to try to shuvit and tried body varials that i understood just how important the back foot placement is (shuvit) and just landing properly on the board (body varial) I came on a lot more in the space of about an hour than i did in a week once i kept trying each trick in sequence. None are perfect yet, but the crossover of the skills for each one are improving the other.

But im assuming your not heading out to skate. No light. off to work? At one point when i was getting alot of split shifts, i would throw my board in my car and have my longish lunch at the local skate park . School hrs on school days means no scotter kids 👍 Dont leave your deck in the boot of your car though, i found out the stupid way that the condensation made one of my decks soggy real quick. The board comes inside when its not in use now.

@@jaded9087 In the summertime, 4:30 am is when I start skating, and there is light. Dawn starts at 4:30 here and by 5:30 the sun is up. Also, I'm not trying to skate in full sunlight with zero shade with the park I have around me, and the street spots around me get crowded after 6am. Also, thanks for the heads up on moist boards 👍🏼
