And good for them, those insurance companies don’t need to cover stupid people who decide to live in the path of a hurricane every single year. Would you buy a new car every single year for an alcoholic who drinks and drives all the time? I bet you wouldn’t. Imagine being the insurance company yourself needing to pay out a million people every single year who refuse to do even the bare minimum to protect their property against a hurricane. Oh I forgot people in Florida are too myopic to imagine what it would be like for someone else.

#1: Those openings were not "scuppers." They are there for dock lines to pass through. They are shaped that way so the ropes won't chafe. Scuppers are lower, down at deck level so water will run off unimpeded. Also, the scene with water entering the ship was staged, in my opinion. That is what watertight doors are for...in rough weather you can keep water out of the superstructure, and below decks, by simply closing the watertight doors, you landlubber! You can't believe everything you see and hear, especially when the narrator has no knowledge of his subject,,,like ships. JS, Master Chief, U.S. Navy (Ret.)

  • @Johnboy33545

Yes, they are hawse pipes. The aft deck of the seagoing tug is near the waterline and frequently awash, it was under a heavy load and you're right about the watertight doors. Letting water into your mechanical spaces, even for fun, is never a good plan. I'll give them the benefit of optimism on this sunny spring day - the opening was accidental. Thank you for your service, Chief, from an old Coastie QM.

@@Johnboy33545 Hello John, you old Coastie! We used to have jokes about Coast Guard, although we had no idea what you guys did. Well, I know now because of KZread! The Coast Guard is an amazing bunch of lads and lasses, and sometimes now I think I should have joined the CG instead of the Navy, although I would not have retired a master chief more than likely. Sometimes I wonder how the heck I made it here, in the Navy; I couldn't believe it! Had to be the prayers of my old mom back home. But anyway, yeah, I did not remember hawse pipe. At 78 I am fast losing the half-million word vocabulary! And John, thank you for the friendly tone of your post, instead of calling me nasty names and telling me I am stupid! Hey, I wish there was a way we could communicate out of this forum. I have a reason...I hand carve, from scratch, small (about 12") highly detailed model boats, aged and finished to look as if they were a real work boat, hit by a shrink ray, and placed in my display cases. Maybe because it happened before cellphone cameras became a big thing, which may be why nobody has ever mentioned it, but the flood on June 6th, 1972 in Rapid City, South Dakota, due to a dam failure (which they had said could never happen) did catastrophic damage to homes and businesses, killed several people and did millions of dollars in damages. It finally caused the city to institute several measures to ameliorate anything else that may happen in the future. People in upper levels of homes and businesses were killed when the floodwaters hit, the water was so high, and in several places, trailer homes were stacked three or four high where they had piled up against standing buildings after being washed from their parks. I went to help in the clean-up effort, and it looked kind of like a war zone.

there seems to be a missunderstanding in the fact, that the bridge in Bosnia, Zavidovici, was a massive steel bridge. 6 weeks before this happens, I used to walk on this bridge. You can belive me, it was made of wood. I have been crossing this podestrian bridge for more than 15 years. The new one at the same place is highter from the surface of the Bosna and now it is made of steel.

Water is life and the hills are where the disasters frequently starts. When humans stopped wandering and settled down near rivers was a favorite spot. The largest cities in the world are along the banks of rivers and coastlines. Most were settled when water was the main shipping and transportation option. I taught in China for a year, buildings go up in six months and you can bet things are not "built well". One couple had to have part of their bathroom redone and unlike in the US where you'd have a shiny new bathroom. It looked just like before. China doesn't seem to be into nice new construction. If the buildings were largely tile and white plaster with a lot of balconies or old ornate brick, they'd be ugly as in. Bathrooms are really ugly in China, as are "ultra modern" ones. Five stories is typical because by law any building more than five stories is required to have an elevator. This most new building is give stories or less.

The scuppers you pictured were FAIRLEADS. These lead the shore moorings from ship to shore with no sharp edges to chafe the lines. Capt John.

Number 8, La Palma. 22,000 earthquakes in one week ? Are you sure of that number ? As that would make it 3,142 per day, 130 per hour, 5 per minute, constantly for the whole week
