Its far cheaper to eat out in the US than Australia even with tipping. Even though the base rate is less in the US the wages of the worker get subsidized by the customer via the tipping process .

In my opinion, at the end of the day it is better to pay more, for example, at the restaurant, but to pay only for food without tipping. The waiter will earn more and will pay his taxes. Yes, driving on the other side of the road is easy to get used to, as long as there's other traffic around. I'm Australian and have visited the US three times and driven extensively each time. First time at age 24, crossing the street on day 1 and before any driving, looked right, nothing coming so stepped out, almost hit by a truck from my left. Ten more weeks with no problems. Second time at age 50, also on day 1, rented a car and drove several hours. Stopped for lunch. Coming out of burger joint looked to my right, nothing coming so pulled out. Almost hit by a truck from my left. Six more weeks with no problems. Third time at age 55, in the country and driving for a week with no problems, pulled off road to take a picture, no other cars around, resumed driving on left side. Went a mile or two and spotted another car coming right at me. Swerved to right side of road, missing other car by 1" or so. Three more weeks with no problems. You can get it right 99% of the time but it only takes that one time you forget where you are and you can be killed. I was lucky three times. Last trip was to UK. Renting a car in Scotland, no problem for me but American woman waiting for her car was beside herself saying "keep left, keep left, keep left". She was clearly very nervous and I wonder how she went. A few years ago, an Australian woman stepped out in front of a bus in Sydney and was killed. It turns out she'd lived the last 10 years in France and returned home only the day before. What do you think she did? She looked to her left, nothing coming so she stepped out. It's so easy to do.

In Australia, "Melbourne" is always "Melben". Americans love to overprounce it as "Mel-boouuurne" like the Bourne Identity or whatever. Nobody here says that. Ever. I've also heard non-Aussies call it "Can-Berrah". No. It's "Can'brah".

Toxin, Venom and Poison are generally interchangeable unless you have some kind of OCD problem.

@@thomassmith4999 um no, in that each is treated differently, even at a first aid level. Envenomation is treated differently to poisoning for example, which is different again to being treated for toxins, be they external sources or internal (such as one variation of food poisoning for example).

Being an Aboriginal person and eating snakes when hunting, you MUST know the difference between a venomous and a poisonous snake, or you will end up very sick or dead. For city people it may seem a matter of being pedantic or OCD, but for us, it can be a matter of survival.

You're knowledge of Aussie is so spot on now you'll have to become one of us :D The snake number made me laugh.

Dont get too laidback about snakes when bushwalking, camping and hiking; especially in hot temps. Always watch your step and never run through the bush. I remember when I was with a group of friends and a chinese resident, (quite new to Australia) started running ahead on the bush path. At that moment, a little baby black snake slithered right underneath her running step in the blink of an eye. She was oblivious to her near brush with danger until I told her. You don't need to be scared, just watch your step. The hotter the temps, the more likely you may encounter a snake; especially on a clear bush path.

Victoria also has no desert. The north west is mostly grassland. The closest desert to Victoria would have to be in South Australia.

Be careful WALKING across the street, the traffic is coming from the direction opposite to what you expect. Almost got wiped out when I first got to NZ.

When you started saying there were snakes in the toilet I was about to have a rage.

Never used to have to pay for extra sauce. But in some places it's not needed as for example at Subway, they drown your sandwiches in the stuff lol

Hi Tristan. I am here to tell you that I stayed in a place in far west Queensland and during the night the desert gets very cold and the snakes DO coil around the dunny pan for warmth. You were actually correct with that point. The proprietor was keen to inform us to wear shoes and check for snakes when using the out house.

Don't worry Tristan, plenty of venomous snakes would have seen you when you were hiking. They are very, very well camouflaged and they are good at hiding and they are also very shy. Take it from me I'm a very experienced herper. You've got to know how and where to look.

True--Years ago, at the Snake and Reptile park, I was checking out the snake pit which is set up as natural bush. At first I thought that they hadn't yet put any snakes in it. After about ten minutes I spotted about fifteen almost invisible snakes!

The only problem when driving in Australia is to concentrate when starting and when stopping. People tend to look the wrong way when starting and go onto oncoming traffic and mentally switch off before they stop. Once you are driving its easy, just remember my advice,

To really top it off and become an honorary Australian, Australia is pronounced "Straya", get that right and we're sweet!!

To be technical it’s Melben not melbin. That’s coming directly from a Melbournian. Just like Brisbane is pronounced brisben or brissie for short. Also extra cost for sauce? Maybe at a fish and chip shop, but not cafes, restaurants or even places like kfc. If they’re charging you, they’re scamming you.

You definitely do have to check toilets for snakes I have personally and my partner who grew up in Portland have had snakes curled up in in those metal toilets.

No.7 Plenty of people get bitten by snakes every year in Australia, however every hospital and medical clinic has broad spectrum antivenom to administer , so fatalities are rare !

Number 7 only applies in NSW and QLD

Going to argue with number 7: While it IS true in the cities you generally don't have to worry about venomous critters do keep an eye out for them in more country areas, especially during late Spring and Summer (Nov to Feb) as the density of wild life tends to be more. You're still probably fairly safe but do keep an eye out in public bathrooms for spiders especially. Oh and in NSW near the Sydney area do make sure to check anything you try drying outside before you bring it in; funnel web males like to wander and can sometimes get stuck inside said sheets... (Though that said you're much more likely to encounter the fairly harmless, if freaky looking, huntsman spiders instead, and I believe most hospitals do stock anti-venom in case any bites you get weren't dry bites). Snakes aren't really a problem though as most of our more venomous snakes are actually fairly shy and prefer to flee rather than bite (unless you go after them) barring brown snakes.

Hopefully you & your family/loved ones are doing okay with all that was happening in Texas. Best wishes for all those impacted.

Nice to see another Australia video from you, Tristan. The indicator/wiper thing depends on where the car was made rather than whether you are driving on a country where you drive on the left or right side. Japanese brands will have the indicator on the right and wipers on the left. European and American cars will be opposite that. One error I have made going to a right hand drive country is going to the wrong side of the car. This makes you feel silly went you are renting and get in and find there is no steering wheel in front of you but really embarrassing when you are getting into a taxi and try to get in the driver's side (Aussies ride "shotgun" in the front of a taxi). Another Australian city that is regularly mispronounced by visitors is Brisbane, which should be pronounced "Brisbn".

In Victoria if you don't have Australian DL... you need a passport... no other photo ID is acceptable.

Don't know about the spiders being a rare encounter, I once woke up to a large and when I say large, I mean large spider being right on the wall beside my face, I was sleeping next to a wall, it's fangs were huge, huge and hairy legs, I couldn't believe what was sleeping right next to my face, I will say though that even though it was so close to my face it didn't bite me, maybe they don't attack unless provoked.

The UV radiation intensity, which causes skin cancer etc, is about 7% higher here in the summer than in the northern hemisphere. It's due to the earth's orbit bringing Australia closer to the sun. Well done on Melbourne👍. Also similarly, Brisbane is Brisban/Brisben. 😆

Passport for ID at a club or liquor store? I get all tourists would have one but not all Australians have a passport so not sure why you need a passport for ID to buy alcohol or go into a club. I mean what if you lose your passport or it’s stolen and you can’t get back to your home country.

I was so ready to roast you for the snakes in the toilet. Great bait and switch. I've lived here for over 10 years, including 3 years in the Northern Territory. I've done countless bush walks, and I've seen a grand total of two snakes - one was a children's python, and the other was on a bush track and took off when I was still 10 metres away. Notwithstanding that though, I still check my gumboots before putting them on... Just in case.

I've seen about 15 here in perth over 25 years, mainly they hang around the beach dunes. I've seen more snakes on rotto than anywhere else, all were dugites. On the mainland they were almost all browns.

Nice video man, however if you didn't see a snake you were either hiking in Victoria during Winter or.. You weren't looking or listening. You'll hear 50 of them for every one you actually see.

I really wanted to go to Australia until I realized how big your spiders are and I have arachnophobia like severely so I don’t plan on coming 😐

Visitors come to Australia and think snakes are like "oh there's a human visitor! I'll just wave hello and display myself to them!" Seriously they do not want to interact and will slither quietly away from humans unless some idiot tries to poke them.

Getting bit on the ass by a snake does happen. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. 9/10 you will have nothing to worry about. But it CAN happen.

there are no poisonous snakes in australia, they're all safe to eat but they're protected so you can't eat them anyway (unless you're an aboriginal)

Ok so ive been pronouncing it wrong all this time and no one told us. Thats just a pure crime everytime ive seen it on the maps and if heard it on tv i thought it was Melbourne bc thats how its spelled i was always taught whell spelling something to sound it out melbin sounds melvin with a speach impediment i never knew i was pronouncing it wrong now i feel bad.

Dead set, there was a red back on our ensuite toilet the other day, so I wouldn't be too blasé about the likelihood of a venomous snake when you are taking a dump.
