The bit that always gets me is, when the water is coming in and the ship’s going down, the old couple cuddle each other on the bed and the mother is reading a story to her children. They all know they are going to perish. God. I feel emotional just thinking about it.

I remember when there was “talk” of making a film about the Titanic. My husband was very upset because he was a huge Titanic buff before the movie. He reluctantly went and watched it at my request thinking it was not going to be “historically accurate enough” ( his words). He left the movie theater truly impressed at what had been made. It is a great memory for me. Married since 91’. Still are. ❤️ We also loved the fictional tale that helped give us a personal perspective into a day in the titanic and helped carry the story through the historical record of that night . Beautifully done. The part that bothered me the most was when the mother is reading her children a bedtime story while knowing the ship was sinking. Oh my heart!

The woman who played the mother: “The very last scene, putting them to bed, was in one way easy and in one way hard. The easy thing was putting myself in that position because I had gone through the big Los Angeles earthquake in 1994 when my oldest son was five. I was a single parent, my son was in the bed with [me], and it felt like a bomb was going off. I got him out of the bed and stood under the doorway, and he was asleep and I was holding him, and I wanted to scream, but I didn’t, because the same thought [that my character has in Titanic] was in my head: We’re gonna die. Let him die while sleeping. Don’t scream. So that was the easy part. The hard part was, during the scene, trying not to cry.”

Ironically, the oak paneling in the staircase around the clock supplied the narrator's misnamed "door" which saved Rose from the ocean in the film. It was an actual Titanic relic which was found floating at sea after the wreck, and it is an example of James Cameron's attention to detail. It came to be floating once the dome over the staircase collapsed (shown in the film) as the ship split once the lights went out. Similar attention to detail was the inclusion of the baker in the scene behind Rose and Jack as the stern of the ship went under. He was the miraculous survivor (who can be seen earlier in the film, carrying a liquor bottle during the panic after the collision). He apparently got so drunk that he was protected against the freezing water until he was pulled aboard one of the two collapsible lifeboats that floated off the deck as the ship went down. One was upside down, and the other was awash, but there were survivors from both.

One of the sweetest moment in the film is when Rose is asked for her name and she said Dawson, Rose Dawson. Yes I know it was a means by which to evade her mother and nutcase fiancé but to teenage me , who saw it in the theatre 8 times, it was romantic; she married Jack in her heart and soul even if she couldn’t do it in life.

  • @YingJwo

Traveling Photographer Rose’s fiancé wasn’t a nutcase. He seemed like a very loyal man who was not only taking care of Rose but also Rose’s mother. He only snapped when Rose cheated on him after all of his generosity. Rose is the true nutcase. Please see my other comment of how Rose is the real villain.

Pretty sure he slaps her before she has sex with Jack, and I kinda think by her leaving a note telling him it’s over, means she didn’t technically cheat. Haven’t seen it in a while, but pretty sure all he wants her for is a pretty trophy, to be seen and not heard... granted Rose does have sex with some guy she’s known for 2 days.

@@marcusblackwell2372 I hope you read this whole post! Titanic: The Experience is a now defunct fun-park attraction that was at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney. You line up and when it's your turn a group of people are ushered into the main room that had the 40ft model from the movie (which I did repairs to before we opened). There a girl dressed as a film AD explains that you are on the Titanic. You then go into another room where the Captain talks to the group before sound, light, video port holes, a shacking floor and water rushing into the room effect happen. Then half the people go out the left side and go up to a locked gate before being let through to the 'upper deck' and onto a life boat and out into a pond, all in a large dark room. and then the deck you where on tilts up. The other half of the people go out the right door get trapped behind another door while another actor panics them, then through to the 'boiler room' where some more actors are trying to stoke the burners, more flooding effects and fire blast effects and finally a door opens and they walk up the "grand staircase" to the sound of 'that damn song' and some cool lighting effect reveals the model of the sunken titanic.. because your dead! I operated the reset buttons for the effects and monitored the attraction. The whole 'fun-park' part of Fox Studios closed after two years. ... cheers.

Love this! I started learning everything I could about the Titanic when I was about seven or eight after watching the National Geographic documentary about it and learning about Robert Ballard's exploration of it. I even did a report about the ship and the sinking and built a mini model with my dad. By the time this movie came out I was obsessed with the ship, it's history, and the disaster itself, I was about 12 when it hit theaters and I can remember going to see it with friends. Pretty sure I was more enthralled with how Cameron had brought the ship back to life on the big screen than I was with the love story and while my friends were all hysterically crying over Jack dying, I was tearing up watching the sinking itself and just how realistic it felt. They've never let me forget that either and I still get a little misty when the band is playing 'Near my god to thee'.

My sole reason for going to see the movie was to see how Cameron made the ship happen. I was newly pregnant, very ill, hated the song, did not care about Rose and Jack at all. To be clear, the reason Tom Cruise didn't get the part of Jack wasn't because his fee was too high. It was because he was too old. He was 34 years old when principle photography took place. That's 4 years older than Billy Zane was! Rose was supposed to be 17 so Cameron obviously wanted someone closer to her own age to play Jack. Cruise supposedly was offered the part of Cal but he turned it down because he wanted to be the star.

That is until I watched the movie and the scene of it rising out of the water, breaking into and sinking really brought that horror that must have been, to life for me. I actually cried as I watched the actors sliding and then eventually falling to their "deaths" on film. It made the it all so real for the generations that came after. Job well, done, Mij, err, Jim. Hi MCA, I knew most of these details because I was an extra in the movie! Thanks for bringing back some great memories for me. Some of us extras would lived in San Diego at the time and would travel to Tijuana MX and then take an old school bus ride down to Rosarita Mexico where Fox built Cameron a studio. I remember driving on the lot and watching the ship being built. I also remember the ship being built in the opposite direction that it should have been going when it launched because if were built in the correct direction, then you'd see Mexico in the background. So everything that was had any sort of writing on it, had to be written in backwards. I haven't thought about this in years. Great research and again thanks for the memories.

"Molly" Brown came about because of the Broadway musical "The Unsinkable Molly Brown". Debbie Reynolds, the musical's star, visited the Molly Brown House here in Denver, and her opinion is that if Mrs. Brown had been around for the musical, she would have found the writers and decked them. Margaret Brown is very much a part of Denver's history, and locals will tell you that she would have HATED being called Molly, so even transplants such as myself have learned to call her either Margaret, or Maggie when referring to her.

I own a piece of a fireplace in a stateroom my dad actually found online but wish I could go back in time and get myself some piece of memorabilia!!!!! The special features also mentioned how any scenes that did NOT involve jack or rose or their other created characters, were as historically accurate as possible...for example, ismay discussing with captain smith about the lighting of boilers...where they showed written documents from the inquests after the disaster showing a first class woman was privy to that discussion and she testified it did happen despite ismay denying it...as such, in that scene, there’s a lady unobtrusively in the background sipping tea. As a result, there is footage of one of my ancestors in the film. Due to the time, and also my paternal grandfather moving to Australia around the Second World War, I don’t have EXACTING documentation as such has proven difficult to find, my families best estimate from the research we did was that this person was either a great great grandparent, or a sibling of that ancestor... there was a sailor who survived on one of the lifeboats, and in his witness statements, he described how when loading the lifeboat in question, the panicked male passengers attempted to rush the boat, and he used the ships tiller arm as a club to push pack and threaten to hit people with if they tried to get aboard...watching James Cameron’s film, you can actually see that happen as well lining up with the documented statements. the scene in question is when 5th officer Lowe yells at passengers to get back, then fires several pistol shots out over the water.

I remember the scene of the woman watching Ismay and the captain talking. I remember thinking that she was just a really bad extra actress because it appeared she was looking directly into the camera. But now I know if she was actually eavesdropping on the conversation so instead of a blooper that scene actually is brilliant. Cameron's attention for detail strikes again!

  • @gokulgopan4397

Except the depiction of the scene is inaccurate. That event happened but it was different. Elizabeth lines said Ismay was excited about the ship's performance. He didn't order anything and he can't. He's just a passenger. Ismay later testified this conversation did happen and that he wanted a speed test Monday or Tuesday after having clear conditions. Such tests where normal. Titanic was making good performance even without having the last few boilers lit. So he wished to see if Titanic could beat Olympic's crossing time Olympic made in her maiden voyage. Not the "make headlines" narrative.

The newest saying "She must live under a 3D printed rock!" You could only change the ending of the Movie if it was called, say, "Jesus on the Titanic" where at the end, just before the bow goes under, Jesus's calls are answered by a herd of whales, who get under it and it rises back up out of the sea. And that would be ridiculous. ;-)
