Aye, you just don't find 'celebrities' like him these days. Everyone has to be part model, part spokesperson. Probably because of our constant online connection that we didn't have back in the 80's and 90's. It's so invasive, and now 'stars' are all two faced sometimes. Nothing really genuine, all the time.

I miss John Candy. We lost an absolute legend when he passed. I can't think of a single movie he was in that I didn't like. He'll forever be my Uncle Buck :-)

A friend of my Father's, a guy named Bill Clevenger, was a cameraman on this film. When I was a kid, he told stories about John Candy, and how he was the nicest guy. After shooting for the day, Candy would often treat the crew to beers. After I grew up I would go on to work on a few films, and I realized how rare that quality was. Most actors, while not necessarily being dicks or anything, simply retire to their trailer or hotel when the day is done, wanting nothing to do with the "grunts". John Candy was a man of the people.

john always put in his contracts for the things that actors demand that the crew got the same food as the actors. john always looked out for the crew and the younger actors on set. i seen this in a documentary about him. he was one hell of a great guy. there are not too many actors that do these kind of things, most could careless about any crew or anyone other then themselves

Indeed he was, on the set of Stripes (1981) he once cooked a big spaghetti dinner for the cast and crew after a long day of filming. Co-star P.J. Soles said that this greatly impressed her in her interview for the Extended Edition DVD of the film.

The is from the "Only the Lonely" wikipedia page: "Co-star Jim Belushi recounted this story: On the set of Only the Lonely, the producers stuck Maureen O’Hara in a tiny trailer. When John Candy complained on her behalf, he was told the budget was being spent on the picture, not on accommodations for old movie stars. Candy responded by giving O'Hara his trailer and going without one until the studio finally caved in and got a trailer for each actor." He always seemed like a guy who cared.

Indeed a fantastic guy and man of the people! When my friend and I got to briefly meet John Candy on Clearwater Beach FL when they were filming "Summer Rental" he was very kind! He was hanging out with crew members and their wives and girlfriends drinking beer and telling jokes! They were hanging on his every word! I'll never forget hearing his booming laugh in person ! What a special memory!

Everybody that ever worked with john Candy bragged about how sweet and generous he was. THAT is a great legacy to leave behind.

You know I'd pay to see the original in theaters.

This was one of my dad's favorite movies. I can very vividly remember him laughing so hard he can hardly breathe during the jet boat scene every single time we watched it together which was quite often over the years. I miss Dad, and John Candy.

John Hughes WAS the 80's.

Plus the guy who gets struck by lightning 66 times in the head, was Gary’s dad in Weird Science, another John Hughes movie. 😎

_The Great Outdoors_ is my all-time favorite movie. I loved it as a kid and I still do to this day.

My mom was an extra on a few SCTV episodes back in the day, used to hang out with John Candy on set and has nothing but nice things to say about the man. He truly was one of a kind, RIP John Candy🙏

As an 80s baby ('84), this movie was one of my ultimate childhood favorites. To this day I still crack up at the bear jumping up and down on John Candy. This movie is so underappreciated and thank you so much for selecting it.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles along with The Great Outdoors and Uncle Buck are my holy trilogy of comedy films. No matter how many times I watch them they always make me laugh. They are all hilarious, heartwarming, and ever so charming. Also John Candy really did seem like the absolute salt of the earth.

I really liked summer rental

It's hard to believe Candy was 37 when he made this movie. I am now 42 and he still looks older in that movie than I am now. Such a huge loss, one of the funniest people ever.

I can only imagine the comedy this man could have given us had he lived till now. Rest in peace Mr. CANDY

Obviously when i 1st saw the movie when i was a kid i didn't get it, but my mom got it, now that i think about it, my mom really really laugh at that!!??

The scene where Chet blew the fur off the bear's butt was the first time I remember belly laughing as a kid. I think we rewound that scene and replayed it two or three times.

I can't ever see John Candy without feeling happy and sad at the same time. He was like everyone's favorite Uncle

John Candy was by far one of the funniest guys I have seen in films. The laughs were always genuine when it came to his comic delivery. Minty should do a "10 Things You Didn't Know About Cool Runnings" which is one of my favorite movies from the late, great John Candy.

Almost everyone of Hughes movies is a timeless classic.

One of my favorite movies. I laugh every single time. Just ridiculously hilarious. Thanks, Minty, for bringing the memories and laughs. 💙❤

The Earth didn't deserve a great man like John Candy. He was kind, hilarious and a good father. He's been sorely missed since his passing and there hasn't been a comedic actor like him since IMHO.

5:39 I don't know why, but John Candy's physical acting kills me when he pops that last bit of steak in his mouth. Fuckin' hilarious!

I would say The Great Outdoors and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles were both underrated movies for their time. They have aged very well and grown in popularity tremendously.

I remember that cartoon fondly, I really wish that it would come out on DVD in the near future. When it does hopefully come out, I hope that the live action bumper segments with John Candy are included. When Fox Family showed reruns of Camp Candy in the late 1990's the completely cut out the bumpers, which made no sense as often John Candy would be shown attempting to demonstrate a wilderness skill, or make a joke which lead into the episode itself.

Bass Lake is not in Yosemite National Park. It’s in town called Oakurst. Yosemite Valley where the Star Trek scene was filmed is about an hour away from Bass Lake. Love your channel!

I saw that interview w candy on you tube and he was so humble and down to earth...he genuinely loved his family and fans, I dont think he realized how well liked he was

I grew up watching John Candy on SCTV. Loved everything he did no matter how bad the movie, he made it worth watching. When he bought into the rival football team he was here a lot and nobody ever had anything bad to say about meeting him. Truly the only celebrity passing that brought a tear to my eye.

When the bear gets shot with the lamp gun though...

I'm Aussie and I use to always get confused when I saw "The Great Outdoors" in the tv guide. I'd get so excited thinking it was the movie only to be disappointed when Ernie Dingo came on.

Any man who would buy a stranger a hot dog and a beer to apologize for a mishap, Is a pure gentlemen. That is something that doesn’t exist anymore. We need to bring that back because that is what John Candy would do in the movie and real life.

I saw this movies three times in the theatre. It’s forever associated with the great times of my youth.

He was an approachable person into his fame walking around toronto. He owned the toronto football team. Very down to earth and loved person.

Growing up I loved watching the great outdoors. As destiny would have it, my wife and I inherited a home near bass lake Yosemite where the movie was filmed. I didn’t know that was the locations until we went to the Ducey’s resort to eat . We then discovered they had all these pictures of the movie posted everywhere . I googled it and the whole movie was filmed where I live now!! I feel so blessed and grateful ! Take care everyone , be safe in these crazy times!!!

I met Shawnee Smith at a convention and I asked her what it was like to work with John Candy on “Who’s Harry Crumb?” She said he was the sweetest guy ever. He was really tough on himself, but he was really great and so sweet to the rest of us.

1986-they were making a movie in the town where I was at. I had just placed my order at the counter of a Burger King. The following scene took place: Woman:"I need 250 whopper combos." Manager:(shocked)"Excuse me, what?" Woman:"I need 250 whopper combos and do you have some boxes they can go in?" Manager:"Are you serious?" Woman:"I need to feed the extras at the movie set." Manager:"Why did you come to my restaurant? There's a McDonalds a mile from here." Woman:"The director specifically said Burger King. Can you please hurry?" Yikes!! Every fast food worker's nightmare.

One of my all time favs. Comedy classic with two Canadian Legends. This movie WAS the summers I had, growing up in a city and spending weeks out at the cottage on the lake with the fam. Every time I throw this film on (have a vhs and dvd copy), I am bowled over with nostalgia. I'll never tire of watching this movie, and I've probably seen it upwards of 75 times already. That's like the typo I found on the VHS sleeve for 1982's TRON; The synopsis writer referred to the MCP as the "Master Control Panel" rather than the Master Control Program that it actually is.

Saw this in the theater and bought the VHS and DVD. Love, love, love this film! Fun and silly, which we need more of.

I have been visiting Bass Lake since the the early 80’s. I remember this film in those days and dine at Ducey’s every year. I have also walked inside the cabin set on the Universal Backlot which still exists today. Great film that has a special place for me.

Loved this film growing up and it wasn’t on that much but I managed to record it from tv once. Great film thanks for reviewing it.

I teared up when Mr Candy so prematurely passed away. He was always what I envisioned as that guy that any and everyone would adore as a family member or friend or neighbor, etc. I would have loved to have had a dad like Candy in this movie. Chet was great and so believable. I don't consider my high praise of John to be naive at all because he was the real deal. *I guess I should have watched another minute of the video and I would have known that menchie covered this already. Oh well, too late now.

That was Bob and Chris Lapoint legendary waterski pros from california i think...they were the stunt men for candy.

Every year before we went on vacation with our kids, we would watch The Great Outdoors. We lived in the Chicago area and loved John Hughs and the fact he made films about Chicago that were so, Chicago. Lost two great ones when Candy and Hughs passed. Good job by Minty, as always. Thanks.

This is still a classic and will remain a classic! Love this movie could watch it over and over!!!

A shoutout to the bear named Bart! Died in 2000, bless him.
