I can honestly say that Enemy Mine was a movie that shaped my childhood. It teaches several great lessons about how to be empathetic and understanding of others, how to see the commonality between yourself and someone different from you, and how to overcome your prejudices/biases/bigotry for the greater good. This movie is more than special, it's one of a kind for me. Definitely in my top ten all-time favorite movies.

Probably because he's in SO many crappy films. I always liked him and found he could turn a really low budget movie into something watchable, but he really did have a habit of taking any script thrown his way - extremely rare for a top notch actor, but something that is definitely going to stain your image.

what makes this film special to me is how it actually turns into a wholesome film of sorts but still keeps a tone of danger and thrills

Loved this film as a child. Extremely underrated and forgotten to the modern crowd unlike Star Wars. Saw it in a $3 bin and had to buy. Hoping my kid will love it as much as me.

I love this movie! It naturally played out as chapters in a book. The introduction of the war between species in space. After the crash, the battle between two combatants on a planet. The truce to allow survival on a hostile world. The sharing and exchange of two alien cultures. The last goodbye. The birth and education of Zamys. The invaders. The capture and failed rescue. The resurrection. The triumphant rescue. The final chapter and epilogue. I really wish they had been able to put the part in of returning Zamys to his home world. The final scenes really needed a little more story to hold it in place.

this movie should be mandatory watching today. remember, the most certain way to eliminate an enemy is to turn him into a friend.

Loved this movie when I first saw it on HBO as a kid. The music is haunting, the FX were good for the time, and the story of good human versus evil humans, and enemies becoming friends stuck with me all my life. Also I always thought it was Dennis Quaid's best performance of his career, and some of the best practical alien makeup ever put on film.

This movie is responsible for making me a sci-fi nerd today, I just love how it was based on science and space etc. but related to humans of the day, so well done and very underrated.

This was one of those movies I watched like 50 times on HBO back in the day, a classic for sure!

In the late 80's, it felt like this movie was played on local TV every other Sunday; must of watched it a dozen times.

Not a perfect film, but still one of the most underrated sci-fi movies in film history! Hands down!!!

Enemy Mine is the first film I've watched in cinema as a 5 year old kid in Soviet Russia and that pit monster gave me nightmares for days! Going to check that "Russian spoken backwards" fact by trying to play the audio backwards :p Cheers Minty, big fan of your work!

Omg totally. Another observation I never put together. Good one!

"This my head, this you head, this you ugly head." I remember this line so well from the movie, I cracked up then and still do when I hear it again.

I also could never figure out why this movie didn't get the respect it deserved. It has more heart and soul than anything that's been made in the last 30 years. Both actors were great in their roles, and the story has more depth and meaning than any other film in the genre. I guess audiences were more fickle at the time.

This is one of my absolute all time favorite movies!!! Right up there with the Goonies!!!

I swear I was just telling my sons about this movie yesterday. The good Ole 80s, pre Covid 19 when life was simpler.

I was at the studio in Munich as a kid and saw the sets they have used for the movie, so as Das Boot. I still remember, to make these hallways look longer, they used a mirror at one end to create this effect. In German, the movie is titled 'Geliebter Feind' (Beloved Enemy). To this day, my father and I still enjoy it and my wife, who has never seen it, loves it too.

This film always gave me the 'feels'. Quaid and Gossett Jr are both amazing, not to mention the child actor who played Jerry's Son. The story is timeless and the make-up fantastic. I strongly recommend it to anyone yet to check it out. Nice one Minty 👍🏽

This film had the most profound impact on my life as a child, I was very moved. It ended up turning me into a humanist at age 9, I did not mean for it to happen but this film placed a deep reverence in me for all life and showed me how to treasure differences as opposed to fear them. It’s a crime for this movie to be so overlooked nowadays. You can tell that a lot of stylistic aspects from this film influenced the narrative pace, character interaction and overall tone of many sci-fi franchises that became huge later on: Babylon 5, Deep Space Nine, Firefly, even video games like Wing Commander and Starcraft.

This is a great sci-fi movie where two warring cultures who fear each other later on find peace and prosperity and respect.

I had not heard of antlions until this comment. Looked them up and to me they resemble the aliens creatures on STNG that take over some major ranked Star Fleet officials at Star Fleet Headquarters on Earth.. Also sort of remind me of those alien creature in ‘Star Trek’ the original cast movie ‘The Wrath of Kahn’............ those things that were put in the helmets of Chekhov and Captain Terrell so that they would crawl into their ears.

I've only seen this movie once, years after it was in theaters, but I really liked it. I loved that it was so character driven. "Enemy Mine" was the obvious inspiration for the episode of "STtNG" entitled "Darmok".

We watched this as a class in January 2000. It was a sci-fi literature English class on what it meant to be sentient &/or human. I was skeptical at first, but I really enjoyed it by the end! It was such a great bonding flick.

I watched this in the theater in 1985 and loved it. I've now seen it many more times since. Great underrated film.

When I saw this as a kid, it Totally Redefined Sci Fi for me, I was used to the Good guys shooting the bad guys, and here they were trying to survive together.. brilliant, Think its time I dug out the Ol'VHS and try to watch it again

There was a Lee Marvin movie called “Hell In the Pacific” (1968) that was very similar and probably the inspiration for the short story. It took place during WWII and how an American and a Japanese soldier have to get along to survive on an isolated island.

There was another one, I forget the name, where two entire crews of a ship or military unit in the Pacific War agree to cease hostilities work together on a jungle island until they saw a rescue was immanent, then they would resume hostilities.

Enemy Mine is based on a Sci-Fi novella by Barry B Longyear and first published in 1979, so I don’t think it’s has so much to do with the Lee Marvin movie. But Longyear migration been inspired by it thou,who knows?

As many have said and I’ll have to say this too. This is the most underrated movie of all time. Nobody speaks about it. Never shown on tv and it’s a disgrace. One of the most heartbreaking stories ever written and truly deserves to be given more love. Thanks for doing this video. If you haven’t seen this movie , please press STOP on this video now. RIP Louis G Jr A phenomenal actor and well played role. Definitely wish younger generations get a chance to watch this, while they are young.

@@TheBrokenLife I saw it at the cinema and was terribly disappointed. Maybe it is not as bad as I remember, but most people seem to have the same feeling towards it as i do. Had they gotten Hamill and McDowell, this could have been a completely different thing (as in way better and both would certainly have been willing to do a "real" movie). I love this universe nearly as much as the Elite one or Fallout, but the movie just wasn't good (and I'm a sucker for cheap space operas. I eg love Battle beyond the stars.).

This is one of my favorite sci-fi movies. I love how an actuon-packed sci-fi romp ends up becoming a display of overcoming personal and cultural differences and growing a friendship.

I was 10 when this came out in theaters. This movie made a huge impact on me and what became my love for movies. 35 years later and I still love it as much today as I did as a kid. Thank you Minty!!

Wow, all these years and I never made the connection that Quaid and Gossett Jr were in Enemy Mine and Jaws 3-D. More of a reflection of how good Gossett Jr was in Enemy Mine under all that makeup.

The first half of the movie always reminds me of 1968's 'Hell in the Pacific,' with Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune as opposing WWII soldiers stranded on an island together.

When I was younger I would always confuse the lizard character in this movie and the lizard character in The Last Starfighter. So much that I thought that Louis Gossett Jr. was in The Last Starfighter.

I loved this movie as a kid. Taught me to be a better person

This was such a great film with powerful performances from both Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett, Jr. I had already knew that both actors were previously in "Jaws 3-D." They had both played well off of each other.

Fun facts: The Star Wars Rebels' episode "The Honorable Ones" is based in this movie. And Tom Baker plays the Bendu in the same TV series.

My grandfather fought in wwii was in 3 invasions Africa, Sicily, and italy. He didn't hate the average German soldier because like him they were doing what their country called on him to do. When he was in Italy his regiment was on this Italian hillside at the bottom of the hill was a lake on the opposite side of the lake was another hill were the Germans. Well they had an arrangement that the Americans would allow the Germans to go get water from the lake and the Germans would allow the Americans to get water. No shots fired.

My father was also in WW2 and recounted being in an American Aid station during a battle when the Germans rushed in. He grabbed his rifle to defend but before he could do more someone shouted, in German, NO! He dropped his weapon and held up his hands. The enemy looked at the scene and brought in two of their wounded. They left after that but marked the building with a white flag, a piece of bed sheet, to signal neutral ground. Later the enemy came back with more casualties both American and German. They also provided medical supplies that they had.

One of my favorite movies as a kid. Probably one of the reasons I still love sci-fi.

In my opinion this is one of the best films ever made. ....also one of the most under-rated, under-recognized, and under-seen. I can watch this over and over. And I have.

Saw it one Saturday matinee, alone in the theatre. One of my all time favorites. I probably have watched this movie once a year since it came out. I always hoped for an extended edition or directors cut with additional scenes, such was my love for the characters and movie in general.

Very under rated sci-fi time has somewhat forgotten

Minty, your conclusion is spot on. Had the two enemies not worked together, neither would have survived. Uncle would have died early on because of a lack of supplies, and "Zamies? (sp)" would not have survived were it not for Uncle. Yes, I do remember that Jerry didn't survive literally, but Jerry, through Zamies and the Jaruba line, did survive.

I'm here because there's quite a conversation on social media about this film, with so many Gen X ex-kids raving and pouring out their hearts over how much we loved it. I loved it back when I first saw it in theaters with my mom, because it wasn't like the other sci-fi I'd been exposed to. It because it was more than just space battles. It was nice to see how enemies could learn to work together and overcome their differences, occasionally busting each other's chops and eventually resulting in the human assuming parenting of the baby Drak.

When he's trying to kick Jerry out of his hut during a Meteor shower 😂

@@andymouse I didn't watch the first 3 Doctors, until after Tom Baker. I don't know, if you're from the U.K. But, where I'm from in the U.S. Tom Baker was the 1st Doctor shown, when they starting airing Doctor Who.

As a kid I remember just randomly stumbling on this movie late night on HBO back in the 90s. Five minutes in and I was hooked! Such a great film

This movie was my first sci-fi experience in cinema that I went to alone. I was so overwhelmed it got me hooked to sci-fi. I bought the VHS later on and watched it several times a year. Haven't seen it in about 25 years now but recently got a hold of the remastered version and will watch it this week.

Always had a fond place in my heart, even when I first saw it in my early teens. Ofc back then I pretty much loved anything about space, no questions asked :)

This was one of my favorite films to watch on cable at my grandparents' house and had been looking for it on DVD for a good while. I found it several months ago at Half Price Books. Thanks Minty for covering this flick.

Cheers, Minty. Was a lad when this came out. My friends and I loved this film. Enemies become family to each other. Great concept, seeing as what was happening in the world at the time. Another great video, one of my favourite content creators. You are a real good editor, Minty. Keep it up!

I actually found the soundtrack to this film a few years back. I had been looking for it for years so when I did find it I was so excited. It’s a great mix of orchestrations and synthesizers in a sci-fi setting. Absolutely beautiful theme.

@@aguibells1 it’s one of those pieces of music that you can feel every emotion that was poured into it. I’ve seen this movie so many times that I can just listen to the soundtrack and know exactly what part it’s on and what line is being spoken during the scene.

I saw this film as a teen in the theatre. I expected something more schlocky but it is very thoughtful, well-acted and moving! The ending always makes me tear up! Good pick and I learned a lot about the film!

I enjoyed Enemy Mine a lot as a kid. The antlion monster really creeped me out. I really enjoyed the character development of the two main actors as they learned to trust and depend on each other. It's a hidden gem of a movie.

I absolutely loved that movie, and I think it's really underrated. When my high school class did a trip to Munich I was able to visit Bavaria Studios and saw all the sets for Enemy Mine (as well as Das Boot and Neverending Story), that's an experience I'll never forget.

Enemy Mine has a great premise, but somewhere along the line, it seems everyone got it into their heads that this was going to be a lousy movie - everyone, that is, except Lou Gossett Jr. Gossett didn’t get the memo, and started channeling Anthony Quinn in his performance. So I found myself watching scenes of this human being talking with a guy in a lizard suit, and for some reason, I’m believing the guy in the lizard suit - and not the human being.

Indeed a great underrated movie. Look forward to watching your review in a few hours.

I saw this movie in grade school. I loved it. I still do. Awesome performances by Quaid and Gossett.

This is one of my favorite films of all time. I was five when I first saw it, and it's one of those nostalgia time machine movies that just transforms me into a kid again every time I watch it.

I watched this a few months ago for the first time & thoroughly enjoyed it. The space bits remained me of Buck Rogers & the puppets & Alien landscape reminded me of The Dark Crystal. A little extra tit bit of info - Bumper Robinson who played Zammis voices Bumblebee in Transformers Animated plus a few other characters in the show.

Great and underappreciated movie. And the only one where a guy who won an Oscar for playing a Marine DI gives birth. I also considered it a remake of "Hell in the Pacific", but in space.

LOVE this movie. One of my favourites. And I totally agree that the messages in the movie should be heeded more so now than ever before.

I fell in love with this film the first time I saw it. I know that the effects look cheesy now, but the psychological and anthropological aspects are timeless.

RIP Lou “”Jerry” Gosset Jr….. I’m going to miss your ugly head!!!!! 😢 This is my favorite movie….

Am I the only one who thought Star Trek? This is extremely loosely the premise of one TNG and one Enterprise episode.

SuperVstech of course. This movie came out 6 years before that episode. I didn’t see this film much back in the day. It wasn’t on TV here and the VHS cover wasn’t interesting enough for me back in the day to pick it up at the video rental store so I have Star Trek burned in my mind. The same short story probably influenced both not to mention this movie must of left an impression on someone over at Star Trek as there are a few similarities.

On a related note: Lt. Morse is played by Carolyn McCormick who later played Minuet on ST:TNG.

THANK YOU MINTY!! I've been waiting for this review and you did not disappoint. I have fond memories of watching this movie with my Dad in the 80's when it aired on HBO and they would play it over and over again and again. Thanks again Minty.

Fantastic movie. Loved it growing up, and loved it more rewatching it as an adult. Underrated and definitely ahead of its time. Worth the Bluray.
