The plotline of Alfred dying and Bruce realizing the he was losing his surrogate father, as well as coming to the realization that he had created a new family and he wasn't alone anymore was good, almost like something from a better movie.

Also that line he gave me freeze about helping him save another life was pretty good. The Batman I remembered would actually try to bring his villains back to normal. Helo them remember who they use to be instead of just beating them up all the time. So that moment I'd say, too, was good.

I still recall a conversation I had with a friend about this movie. He is a massive comic book fan. He mentioned that in the letters pages of the Batman comic it was said, "There are Batman fans who love the comics. Others love the 1960s TV series, and never the twain shall meet." Taking the franchise in a different direction, Shumacher was supposed to have said that "Bruce Wayne has had plenty of time to get over the deaths of his parents." Yet if this did happen, it would mean that Bruce Wayne would lose his motivation to be Batman.

In fairness, I kinda liked making Batgirl into Alfred's niece for this canon, as it kinda helped make his illness more tragic for her, and give her more reason to why she was partaking in underground motorcycle races to raise money for his cure. It's a shame the movie didn't focus more on Afred's illness.

I'm on Schumacher's side regarding his apology. The movie spun out of his control due to the drive to make it more toyetic. It's not simply an issue of people hating his vision, since his vision sounds like it got binned. Hearing an apology helps put what happened with the movie into perspective, considering Schumacher has been shit on for decades over it. It also means he took ownership for its failure and his failure to stop interference into the production. I have a bit more respect for him hearing that. As an aside, Batman and Robin was where I first learned about film licensing costs. A video store I rented from a lot posted the replacement costs for damaged or stolen movies on the rental covers, and they were often quite high (if I remember right, around $200 per copy). This is because video stores, like theatres and even special event screenings, needed to acquire distribution rights for the films. These rights meant each copy a store got costed far more than the consumer retail cost for private viewing. Batman and Robin was apparently such a failure that Warner wasn't too concerned with the higher licensing cost, and the replacement price on the rentals was around just $30.

There is also one scene that was kept as important to the film role when you first met George and Elles characters, George constantly keeps putting his head down because Celine was keeping an eye on them. I worked at WB at the time. Several things I heard about. Steven Seagal was filming a movie at the time. He complained about having a headache because of paint fumes on the set. His trailer was moved to America St, an outside set. When Batman moved in, Arnold was put on the street between America St and the set. Arnold had his trailer and his gym trailer, frequently enjoying a cigar after working out and every once an while you could see him in the blue paint. Long story short, Arnold and his peeps noticed Seagal and his perps walking through. The rumor was Arnold noticed him and said "look it's Steven Seagal, the big action star." Another story I heard was that Clooney won the role by game of horse. The basketball court was in front of the gym which was by the rear of the commissary. I think that other player was Leon di Bonventura. It seemed that the female assistants took lunch right as the extras from the party scene were taking a break. One of the cast members of a popular show made the comment "they certainly do like the sparkly men". Of course, these were rumours and should be taking with a grain of salt.

Mark, one of the things I really appreciate about your videos is that you don't troll anything. I hate troll videos and people that try to get attention by bashing a movie, etc, just because they didn't like it and capitalize on perceived public opinion. Batman and Robin is a classic case of a notable cast trapped in a bad screenplay and direction, with camp. That is a good point about "toyetic", even George Lucas sold out in some cases to sell toys as he owned the Star Wars merchandizing rights. You're not going to hear many directors get humble and admit they made a bad movie, good for him. The positive outcome of this movie is that it stopped this series of Batman movies, and Christopher Nolan made his iconic "Dark Knight" trilogy.

Great video, just a couple of notes: 1: The 'superhero genre' never really died after Batman & Robin, as the next year (1998) Blade came to cinemas, and in 2000 X-Men hit the silver screens, both to great success. 2: I still don't get why people only bash Batman & Robin for having bat-nipples, as those were introduced to the costumes in Batman Forever.

Upon re-watching the relevant portion, I came to realize that "popular zeitgeist" is a separate thing from mere box office numbers. True, Blade and X-Men did make quite a moolah (particularly relative to production costs), but neither quite attained the aforementioned phenomenon. FTR, Spiderman even has the honour (!?) of denying Episode 2 ("...Clones") the top-grossing film of the year title.

I like that they got Arnold because he was the world's biggest actor and then had to rewrite all of his lines because he couldn't act. I think that says a lot about how the studio execs were the true villains of this story. Even so, this is one of my favorite campy movies to watch now. Not everything has to be gritty and moody to be enjoyable.

I don't care what anyone says, a part of me will always enjoy Batman & Robin. It is not as bad as other people say. It is just the cool thing to do to hate on this film. I rather watch this movie over Catwoman any day.
