10 things to declutter TODAY (#6 is a doozy! 🫠) | Messy To Minimal Mom Tips for a simple home!

Hey! My name is Natalie and I love sharing about my life as a mom and homemaker/homesteader. Around here we embrace the coziness in the chaos and the magic in the mundane. I believe simple joys and a home filled with love (not STUFF) are more important than "keeping up with the Joneses." I'm glad you stopped by! I hope you find some encouragement and gentle motivation and a cozy corner of the internet that's full of peace.

    Not buying all the crap you need to immediately start up your new hobby is GOLD. Idk if you are the one that said it or someone else, but I’ve used it for a while now. It definitely saved me when I “started” my sourdough starter journey. Turns out I am not interested enough nor do I even like bread enough nor do I even like the taste lol I almost bought the razors to score bread and everything. But I stopped myself and forced myself to at least make a few loaves first. Dodged a hobby clutter bullet!😅

    Why you are still decluttering? Because you are alive and you still consume and enjoy life. I have been a minimalist for over ten years, I have curated an environment that work for me. Decluttering is maintenance I do it daily , let go of what does not work for you. Thank you for your awesome work 🙏❤🙏

    The last one is totally true for me. When I moved out of my parents house and started living alone w my then bf/now husband, I kept hearing my dad's voice in the back of my head how everything I did wasn't smart or good enough so I had to remember what he did around the house becuz any rule I made up for me would never be good enough. But once I realized that I could make my own rules and that it's OK to make decisions for myself, it was such a wild wild trip to shift my mindset to that becuz of how brainwashed I was to thinking anything I did wasn't good enough. I'm glad I got out of it and am able to make decisions for me and my husband on certain things 😊

    Speaking of decluttering your digital space: I have started doing something the last couple years that has been an absolute game changer. In January/around the new year sometime I will go through and star any important/current emails. I’ll then archive EVERYTHING else in there 😂 obviously things like the promotions tab just get deleted. But everything else goes to archive. If I REALLY need it, I could find the email. But it’s the most incredible fresh start at the beginning of the year. If I have time I will also unsubscribe from things. I didn’t realize how much mental clutter that was for me. Highly recommend

    I think we often treat our homes like little mini shops, I watched something on youtube ages agao and it is surprising how long it takes to use up things, and since i wait till I need most things before I buy them I tend to use those things more carefully, I don,t waste shampoo/toothpaste etc most of it goes down the sink before you even realise, I do not want loads of products sitting in my house, I understand I have shops near by and not everyone has that but we get carried away alot of the time.

Honestly, it doesn’t work super well, it’s quite a bit of work, it takes up space, it is LOUD, and it doesn’t make enough quantity for even everyone in our family lol. Now I need to let myself resell it, but I feel just awful we spent $200 on that. Still learning and making mistakes after 7 years of this lifestyle!

    Hi Natalie, great video and how you explain things. I have to stop comparing me to other creators I watch. I have limited mobility and I can't always get things done but I raise my 3 grandsons and they do help. I have so much clutter every drawer, cabinet, closets, etc. are stuffed and I'm overwhelmed I just want to scream 😱. I don't know if I should do like all the closets then drawers all the areas like that or do one room completely. I'm just stuck in a suit and can't get out. I have gone back and watched your messy to minimal series a few times. What would you suggest on how to do it? Thanks and have a great week❤

  • @NatalieBennett

    @NatalieBennett

    Health/mobility issues can be such a frustrating road to walk, especially when you are surrounded by clutter! My best advice is to start somewhere super small so you can give yourself an easy win and get the ball rolling there. I am not super methodical with my decluttering, especially on low energy days. If it’s in front of me and can be done in 10 minutes or less I’ll usually set a timer and do as much as I can and call it a day. It’s amazing how much you can get done in small steps vs huge projects that leave you exhausted!

    I’m keeping the fantasy self items in mind next time I want to strike up a hobby that takes more learning time than I have time for in my current stage of life. I have a bunch of cross stitch stuff sitting unused because I’m a mom of three young kids and learning to do it is just not feasible right now.

    With the messages and discount: I often subscribe for the order and unsubscribe again a week later: And after a year you can subscribe again for the next discount. As I have some brands I buy regularly this works fine for me. „Fantasy Self“ and new hobbies… As I experienced that I will just lose hobbies sometimes very early I always borrow things first. I knitted for 1,5 years and most of my needles were hand me downs. After 1,5 years I almost completely lost interest. Sometimes I think about starting again, but it’s not the right time now. So I kept a small box of needles a small stash of wool to be able to start a scarf if I fancy it. I am very happy I didn’t bought the fancy needle set made out of rose wood for a lot of money (I REALLY wanted it then!). For me it’s important to reduce the purchases. I actually am a bit overboard with it. As I sew a lot for 6 years and still don’t have a good set of hand needles or something to organize my patterns. I also don’t have a darning egg / mushroom and my fingers don’t thank me after a evening of darning without it 😅 As for things that are already there, I think if it’s just a few things you can keep them, especially if it’s something you really enjoyed. I already had to buy hobby stuff new because I decluttered to much. For example I had to buy a new French grammar as I suddenly started courses again to fresh up my languages. Hobbies come and go for me like the moon, some stay, some vanish, some re-entry after a few years. I try to find a balance between being prepared for them and being overwhelmed by stuff that I never use. Also a small creative stash sometimes is inspiring. Repurpose things that you already have for your hobby! You want to make a scrap book? Some old magazines might come handy! Of course, you have to be careful. I always ask myself: Is it enough stash for one or two projects or is it more? If I have enough non specific items for a project I toss the rest. Of course I have more fabric than I need for the next project, but the scraps I have no plan for are „non specific craft supplies“. I keep old calendars for gift wrapping but I won’t realistically use up more than one or two in a year. So I won‘t keep them. After years of doing this I have a good overview of what I have, what will used up quickly and what might be too much. To put in perspective: I actually am a minimalist. My wardrobe is quite small, I have a minimalist kitchen, I am careful about what I buy or take into my life. But I also believe that using what you have is more sustainable than declutter it. It’s a slow approach and I also had my big purges when I started minimalism nine years ago and again in my pregnancies when I REALLY started. But after that slow and steady is a good way (at least if you were able to reduce you consumption to a level where there are less items coming in than going out).

    My toaster broke a year ago but there's only a few weeks a year in my climate where I wouldn't make toast or bagels in my quick heating gas oven. I'll get a replacement toaster when I make space for it again!

    Fair question! I asked my friend with no toaster the aame thing! They use either the oven, mini bechtop oven, grill/broiler or you can even pan fry your bread 😊 if it works for you to keep it, keep it! I like to reheat pikelets in the toaster! We actually have two, we need a separate one for my son who's coeliac 😊

Here in our house, our toaster IS a multi-functional appliance that is used many times a day and for more than just toast! It has earned is place in our inventory. That veggie spiralizer, though? Nah...
