I remember a few things: 1) If I threaten the game to turn it off, it would unfreeze and work properly again. 2) If I look away during the startup screen, the game is more likely to work. 3) PS2 slim lasts longer. 4) Don't leave your Memory-card around your friends, take it with you to the toilet if you have to, because these fuckers will erase its content as a prank. 5) Make sure your memory-card is still in your house after your guests leave, because some people's parents never bought memory-cards for their kids. 6) Save as much as you can because the game will free-...

Depressed for nostalgia is a problem that many of my gamer friends have. They keep buying old "retro collection" games, played it for an hour and still feel sad cuz those games are just not as awesome as they remembered it. Me? I've accepted that kratos are not a psychotic god murdering hack and slash with a lot of personality anymore. He's a dad now. A story driven dad with gorgeous graphics and great scores on kotaku and polygon. The industry fucks nowadays. Sure. But thankfully, every once in a while comes masterpieces like tlou, tw3, nier automata, or botw to remind me why i love this hobby ;)

Oh god, one of my most heartbreaking PS2 moments: So at my house we would always use my mom's nail polish remover and a q-tip to clean the game discs when they didn't want to play right, and it worked GREAT. So one day I brought my copy of Kingdom Hearts 2 (a most beloved game) over to my friends house to play. It had seen some heavy use, and hadn't been cleaned in some time, and didn't want to play right. So I had my friend go get his mom's nail polish remover and a q-tip (a trick he had never heard of) and started cleaning the disc... ... ... Only for it to get cloudier the more I cleaned... ... ... Apparently his mom used a different kind of polish remover, and it ATE AWAY AT THE TOP LAYERS OF THE DISC! The game was ruined, and I was heartbroken, because I was NOT one of those rich kids, and it would be at least a few months before we'd be able to afford another copy of the game. If you read this far, thanks!!! I guess this isn't exclusively a PS2 era problem, but that's when it happened to me lol

Back when I was a kid the disc drive eject gave out, being the industrious ( or terrible little shit I was, I took everything apart...) I took the ps2 apart, took the lid off, the cover to the disc bay off, and put the disc in manually with only the white plastic magnet to keep the disc in place. For months it worked... until during my first playthrough of Kingdom Hearts my friend got up to get a drink, tripped on the controller cable, which dislodged the disc and it went flying across the garage floor destroying the surface. I found the ps2 a few weeks ago and it still works... god I loved my ps2.

I have so many great memories with the ps2 -Being able to play ps2 and ps1 games on the console -Played dvds -played music -Controllers were basically indestructible and simple to hold -The little icons on the memory card screen(look at those for hours as a kid) - the little ps logo on the ps2 could rotate - that error screen - that startup screen - that main menu screen - when ur disc was so scratched up and after constant cleaning to PlayStation 2 logo pops up and than u wait on the black screw. Crossing ur fingers the game will work this time - Ran the game 90% of the time even if it was beyond deep scratches - playing rpgs like final fantasy and kingdom hearts and forgetting to save - not having enough space on memory card so I would literally cry because I had to delete one if my game data's - it actually got me and my family to play together -Internet was limited so when u had internet to look up cheats for games u would write them down on a piece of paper - SOOO MANY GAAAAMES RPGS, PLATFORMERS, SHOOTERS, FIGHTERS, RACERS, HORROR, HACK N SLASH...IT HAD IT ALL I love the ps2 and I appreciate it so much for Introducing me to the world of gaming My first system is a ps1, but I wasn't really into gaming until I got the ps2

I was negative 7 years old when this came out but I only got the PS4 in 2017. So from like 2011 - 2017 I played on my PS2 with my Simpsons Hit And Run, FIFA 08 and many more. 7:17 was the bane of the console though. You wake up, you turn it on and cycle through your cases of disks. You find the one you'd love to play. You insert it and wait in excitement. And you're greeted by that. It ruined my day and I'd always ask my dad to do 'the toothpaste trick' where you use toothpaste and other things and when used on the disc it would work again. I have a display of all my PS2 memories on my desk. And despite the fact I didn't know what the analogue button was and I constantly pressed it (never disabled my analogue sticks though) I had one hell of a time in then 6 years and I've been doing my best to get the parts to the TV I've had since my mum gave me the PS2 which was in the living room when I was 6. The first ever game I played was MotoGP and I remember I thought I was breaking the law for playing Simpsons Hit And Run which was a PEGI 7 when I was 6. Memories :)

I remember getting my first PS2 at Fred Meyer. I bought it alongside a memory card , The Bouncer, Summoner, and Tekken Tag Tournament. Such a great time in my life. Of those 3, Summoner was my favorite. It didn't look as pretty as the other 2 and it was a difficult game but the story was good and the post credit scene was hilarious. It's worth looking up on youtube if you don't know about it.

My favorite one would have to be the one included with "Jak and Daxter". The damn thing unfolds into a massive adventurer's map. Completely pointless and useless as far as teaching you how to play the game, but holy crap that thing was really cool. Didn't have many PS2 games, I think I've only got around ten if I'm making a really generous guess. Was always broke back then. Anyways, my point is that I don't know if doing stuff like that for the manuals was a common thing. Still kind of heartbreaking between the loss of the manuals and not having the published Strategy Guides. I know it wasn't PS2, but the one for Star Fox 64 was pretty amazing with all of the flavor text.

The early Metal of Honor games had introductions in their booklets to set you up for the story in the game, and MOH Rising Sun even had a guide to all the weapons and a guide to the characters in the game including backstories for all of them.

The GTA ones were the best in my opinion, they were like magazines or newspapers that made you feel like you were part of the GTA universe.

You knew a game disc (or God forbid the console itself) was beyond saving when you booted up the PS2 and the red screen came up every single time. (happened to me on 3 games and my first PS2)

When the loading a game and you wish that game would start af, and the PlayStation2 logo shows up after Sony Computer Entertainment thing. That is the most exciting thing for me for playing PS2

Analog button has been used for standard buttons (square, triangle, circle & X) in order to have analog capabilities. Best of luck! ;)

The good old days when games were actually released finished. Instead of "constantly" updating.

Jacob Molyneux that's mainly because of game models and textures. Today's weekly updates for the most don't make any change to those things, and in fact those are actually burned on the disks. Updates usually fix bugs and security. Once upon a time, bugs were 99% fixed before the game launch and so was security. And those little harmless bugs that were found months or years after the release, were just really funny to exploit. Also, many PS2 games are 5/8 GBs big.

@Jacob Molyneux Uh... they're 4-8GB excepting the few blue (CD) discs, ~700MB. And game Devs today don't really GAF about customer satisfaction after they have your $60. I remember Sims 3 was unplayable for more than a frigging year of its release, for example... too busy on the expansion to fix the base game. 🙄

Its called beta. The reason games are released like this is because of the online era so games can constantly be updated when there is a bug.

Me and a group of friends camped out at Target on a sugar high till 9am when the store opened. I was soo hyped after being the 3rd person in line to get 1, soon as I walked in the door and entered my room I looked at the ps2 box then my bed and outta no where just crashed instead of opening my system... lol.

The analog button was a throwback to ps1 because there was no dual analog at launch back then. It's a feature specifically for ps1 games, the ps2 games sense it. It's only there for backwards compatibility, similar to the "mode" button on the Genesis 6 button pads. It's for games made before they exist so they don't freak out.
