Furniture sets always seemed arranged to “worship” the TV.
The thing with library books at school: probably same everywhere in the world. I grew up in soviet and post soviet time, ruining the book or its cover was considered a crime for school, and we would have to pay. No only money, but dignity and many hours of work in the library during summer. We haven't had craft or wrapping paper back then, so we made covers with newspapers. Later, when plastic bags became available , we'd wrap them in plastic, and because scotch tape wasn't yet introduced on our side of earth, we'd just use hot irons on plastic to make the cover a perfect fit.

I so agree about the backwards books. It makes no sense to me, except to say that those people don't read. For me, books are always decorative, no matter what color. Of course, back in the day before most books were sold already bound, those who could afford books in the first place chose whatever binding they preferred and got uniformity that way. So I guess covering them in paper is the new, cheaper version of that;-))

You are so right about "sets". Twenty years ago we bought an oak bedroom set. What a mistake. I came to hate it but couldn't get rid of something so expensive so what I did was change the bed to a beautiful upholstered one, got new lamps and art, put a bench at the foot of the bed, got gorgeous cotton bedding, and changed out one of the nightstands for one my husband made. These changes, for a fraction of the price of getting all new furniture, make the original furniture look so much better and the matchy-matchyness not so noticeable! I think it might even be LeChic approved now!!😃

✨Something I feel makes a house look basic and boring, are the plain cheap light switch covers put in by many builders . There is such an array of gorgeous ones available online (but always check reviews), there’s no excuse to overlook a detail that’s in plain sight, especially in primary areas. One can improve on those on any budget, because it’s not a major purchase.✨Ooooh, those sets of mass produced stuff and backwards books hurt my eyes too, but seeing baby Albert made them better! ✨

Most of my art is original. I purposely started collecting it when I was young and am very proud of it. I also display my books with the spines showing with no rhyme nor reason, no color grouping, etc. Some are very old and others brand new because they are meant to be read and not decor.

Garettt! I desperately need a video on common decorating issues that pop up in old/vintage houses, and how to mix styles inspired by the age/architecture of the house with your personal style (while I think full period restorations are lovely, they seem more like a museum and less like a home to me). (We just bought a 1910s Craftsman bungalow with all the original trim & woodwork intact & unpainted). I’d also love a video on styling “placeholder” furniture/pieces--the (usually IKEA/very affordable) stuff we already have that we’re using while we save up/take time looking for more long lasting vintage or more higher-end pieces. Like right now we’re using our 1950s red formica & chrome kitchen table (that I think I scored for $75 6-7 years ago) as a dining room table bc we didn’t have a dining room in our apartments before we bought a house & we’re saving up for a solid dining room table that will hopefully last us many many years. But I need to buy a rug for the dining room-do I go for something affordable that fits the small table we’re currently using & then upgrade the rug when we buy a new table or do I buy a slightly nicer bigger rug that will work with the eventual new table now? I love your focus on sustainability, individual style, and Albert! Your channel has given me so much confidence in my design choices for our first home.

Totally agree! Along the same lines as the mass produced art, I guess, but when I see a bowl with wood beads or that chain link, that screams basic to me. There are so many interesting sculptural pieces and other items that you can choose to decorate with that reflect your personality more than a bowl with some beads.
@momcatx2

Ohmygosh those wood beads just haphazardly, only not, spilling from a bowl. That, along with the backward books etc just baffle me. It makes no sense. Why would you have wood garland just tossed on a table? How do you find that book you want to read? Lol dumb.
Albert- what an angel. Keep him guest hosting😇 Nice tips.
The only use for the backwards book is for a mystery section of your personal library. Pampas grass was horrible. One of my extended family members had it back in the 1970s, and it was like precious gold. couldn't even go near it, yet it was in a well used hallway :/ Albert, as always is an awesome highlight of the video :)

Thanks for the decorating okey-dokey on Books. A book is a thing of beauty forever! One of the things that sets my teeth on edge is when I see KZread decorating influencers taking an old book, painting the cover, tying it up with a ribbon, and calling it decor. 😱 or worse yet ripping up a book to use the pages to make wreaths. Talk about desperate for a craft project.

Goodness -- what you've described is cringe-worthy!

I once heard the best way to become well-read is to stop treating books with respect. Bring books with you when you travel, even if they might get beat up. Read in the bathtub without worrying about water damage. If you know you'll only have a few minutes to read while you wait for an appointment, rip out a few pages and stick them in your pocket. While I never could bring myself to do the latter, I can agree with this to an extent. Books aren't sacred. The stories and information they contain may be important, but damaging one is not murder. At the end of the day, our possessions are to serve us. If someone gets more pleasure out of a book by painting it or making a wreath from the pages, I'd say that's serving them!
Great video, I love your viewpoint, Garrett! Another basic item is generic door knobs. It is worth spending the money for high-end fixtures! I love the look of a substantial plate behind the knob or lever and love the weighty feel of a high-end knob/lever. It's an instant, noticeable upgrade that is worth the expenditure.

I love Hollywood Regency! But then again, I also like matching sets, and even the color gray! But just like any style, color, matching sets, etc., I don’t like to be overwhelmed by it. Like you regularly advise, layer in other elements.
Great Video thank you! I think we should approach our homes as long term projects. Meaning we layer in vintage finds and textiles. It doesn’t all have to be bought today. Also, I have many decor pieces I put in storage and use again later. I find themes such as I live in the Southwest, therefore my home has to have a Southwest vibe to be basic. Mixing and matching is always better. Love to Albert 😘

What a wonderful dad you are to your fur babes. They are enormously lucky and they deserve all that you give. Blessings to your whole family. Oh! Thank you for pronouncing “Pampas” correctly. First time I’ve heard that forever. I cannot stand pampas. I remember my father spinning his wheels in the back yard with rope tied to the pampas base and the car. He had tried to dig it out but couldn’t. So, what is the next best option? It was hilarious. That was about 55 years ago. Did he get that Pampas out you ask? No, the rope broke and it was off the trawler, (and that rope would hold the 45ft Trawler in a 50 to 100 knot wind.) He had to use an axe. Moral of that story is don’t plant pampas in your yard and I always hated the stuff since. That and Peacock feathers, they are bad luck and I would never have them in the house. Cheery aren’t I. My parents were very superstitious, very. Not don’t walk under a ladder or a black cat crossing my path their superstition ran to greater things and I have carried the traditions on with my children and they with theirs. I’ve taken my pills and I’m on a rant run. It is 12:56am here. Buy.

Hi Garret, I lived in France for a year and discovered that European books are printed "the other way round" to make them (theoretically) easier to read when they're on the shelf in a bookshop. Of course, after being so accustomed to the American way of printing on book spines, it takes quite a bit of getting used to.

Aww Garrett, how did you know I needed an Albert fix? Such a little sweetheart! ❤❤❤ Backwards books drive me insane! Half the point of having books displayed is so your visitors can peruse them. I feel, anyway. Are visible cables basic? Because I've reached the age where they really annoy me. I've been cleaning them up with wooden cable management boxes and those paintable covers that attach to the walls. Also I've been going wireless wherever I can. Even my electric guitars! 😊
Matching furniture sets are what I grew up with, my family and friends had it and it seemed so normal & right. But once I found my style, there was such a wealth of goodness to choose from that complements the same vision and provides layers and interest - it would be a mistake to limit oneself and call it a day. It's more effort but also infinitely more rewarding.
Thank you for your knowledge Pup is beautiful 💕🙏🏾

PREACH! 👏🏻 👏🏻. You touched on so many of my pet peeves…plastic ‘glam’, backwards books….I love it!

Thanks so much Tammy! He gets a ton of hugs and kisses.:)
I love the look of two matching side chairs in the living room as you have shown. Matching nightstands, chairs, and nightstand lamps are all that I want to match.
